1. SCOPE
This Technical Information Report defines the proprietary diagnostic communication protocol for ABS or VSA ECU
(Electronic Control Unit) implemented on some Honda vehicles. This protocol does not apply to all Honda vehicles.
This document should be used in conjunction with SAE J2534-2 in order to fully implement the communication protocol in
an enhanced SAE J2534 interface.
The purpose of this document is to specify the requirements necessary to implement the communication protocol in an
enhanced SAE J2534 interface.

The serial diagnosis offers the possibility of rapid access to control unit information and functions without disconnecting
the wire harness. Serial diagnosis allows interrogation of all input signals present at the control unit, external switching of
all actuators to which the control unit has access as well as reading the internal unit information such as the fault memory.
Serial diagnosis can be used in the end of line inspection or in the service workshops and can contribute towards
considerable savings in inspection time.

3.4 “MESSAGE”
A message consists of a certain number of bytes and always has the same format.
3.5 “TELEGRAM”
The sum of all messages transmitted during communication with a control unit is a “TELEGRAM”.
3.6 “TRANSMITTER”
The unit (control unit or tester) which is entitled to output a message is called a “TRANSMITTER”.
3.7 “RECEIVER”
The transmitter executes a passive handshake (i.e. it checks the complemented byte with respect to correct
transmission). The receiver of a message is called a “RECEIVER”.
The receiver performs an active “handshake” (each received byte (except “ETX”) is complemented and returned to the
transmitter).

5. INTERFACE
The ABS/VSA control unit requires one line for communication with an external tester, the bi-directional communication
line (K line). This line possesses bus capability, i.e. it can be connected together with lines with the same function from
other control units (see Figure 4). Activation of a control unit on the diagnosis bus by the tester takes place by means of
an address specific to the control unit which is transmitted via the bi-directional line (K line).

The ABS/VSA control unit is selected from all control units connected to the diagnosis bus for a subsequent
communication by the means of stimulation by the tester. Stimulation takes place by transmission of the address word
assigned to the ABS/VSA control unit.
In normal mode, stimulation can occur only when the vehicle is at a standstill with a speed below the diagnosis limit speed
and with the ignition switched on. If the control unit is in the failure mode (valve relay switched off), stimulation is
accepted at any speed.
In order to access diagnosis mode, the address word must first be transmitted via the K line. The address word used for
stimulation must be transmitted in 10-bit format at a transfer rate of 5 baud ±0.5%.

The address word is made up as follows, in the order of transmission (see Figure 5):
1 start bit (logical “0”, low potential, reaction of control unit to 1-0 transition)
7 data bits (ECU-specific address), starting with the LSB
1 parity bit (parity odd)
1 stop bit (logical “1”, high potential)
After abortion of stimulation detection, the control unit synchronizes itself to a stimulation operating again, whereby this
can be repeated an arbitrary number of times by the tester.
The ABS/VSA function is no longer available after completion of a valid stimulation operation. The control unit is then in
the diagnosis mode. During the diagnosis mode, the monitoring routines for the control unit peripherals required for the
ABS/VSA function are processed only to a restricted extent.
Communication is set up on the basis of the existing ISO 9141 specification. After the control unit has received the stop
bit of the address word which has been identified as its own address, it waits for 1 bit duration of the stimulation word in
order to give the tester an opportunity to prepare itself for a subsequent communication.
After this waiting time, the control unit reacts with output of a synchronization byte on the K line. The reaction takes place
within a time of t1, calculated from complete reception of the stimulation address stop bit.

The synchronization byte has the following structure (see Figure 6):
The synchronization byte is transmitted with the same baud rate as is used for subsequent data transfer. The tester can
recognize the baud rate on the basis of the synchronization byte (e.g. by measurement of the intervals between the falling
edges).
2 key-bytes are transmitted after the synchronization byte. These inform the tester of the parameters for subsequent
communication. The key-bytes have the following structure (See Figure 7).
The 2 key-bytes must be considered as belonging together and represent a 14-bit piece of information. The low byte =
0xAB is transmitted first, followed by the high byte = 0x02.

Following transmission of the synchronization byte, the control unit waits for t2 before transmitting the first key-byte. This
allows the tester sufficient time to change its baud rate to that measured from the synchronization byte.

After output of the second key-byte, the control unit expects the complement of the second key-byte from the tester as
confirmation of successful communication, whereby the tester must observe an interval of t4 before it sends the
complement. This interval serves the purpose of allowing the control unit sufficient time to switch over to receive mode.
After successfully completing the communication setup, the control unit starts with the first byte of the ECU ID message
after a time of t6.
During communication, the ABS/VSA control unit operates with the following data format (see Figure 8):
If the control unit recognizes the complement of the key-byte as containing an error, then it can assume that the tester
has not correctly determined the baud rate of the synchronization byte. The control unit waits for t5 before it starts with
renewed output of the synchronization byte so that the tester experiences a time-out and also detects an error.
In the event of a fault, communication setup can be performed once more without renewed stimulation. A time-out
representing approximately 1 bit period of the stimulation word (200 msec) is used for detection of a fault. This means
that the interval between 2 bytes during communication setup must never be longer than the time corresponding to the
time-out.
If a tester time-out occurs during communication setup, the tester can assume that the control unit (if it is still capable of
functioning) will start communication setup again with output of the synchronization byte, unless the number of
communication setup repetitions programmed in the control unit has been reached.
If a control unit time-out occurs, which can happen only if the control unit does not receive the complement of the second
key-byte, it reacts with output of the synchronization byte after the time-out, as mentioned above.
7. COMMUNICATION
The information which is exchanged between the tester and the control unit is combined in messages on the basis of the
respective content. All Messages have the same message structure. Each message consists of a byte in which the
message length is transmitted, a message counter, the message title, message-specific information and the message
end.

The message length byte specifies the number of following bytes (in the above table, this is therefore (n-1)).
The first transmitted message (this is the first message of the ECU identifier) has a message counter value of ‘1’. The
value of the message counter is incremented by each transmitted message. The value ‘0’ follows the value ‘255’. Since
two successive messages must never have the same direction of transmission this also means that the value of the
message counter is always an even number for messages which are output by the tester. Correspondingly, the message
output by the control unit always possesses an odd message number value. The message counter thus offers an
additional check for correctness of transmission.
The message title, which is transmitted as the third byte, provides information as to the message involved and regarding
the data which is transmitted or requested in this message.
Message-specific bytes are needed wherever other information is required in addition to the message title. In the case of
the message “clear fault memory”, it is obvious what is intended with this message, i.e. no message specific bytes are
necessary. This is not the case; however, for the message “output fault memory”. Message-specific information must be
present here, in this case the bytes of the fault memory.
The last byte of a message is the “message end” byte. The byte always has the same content, namely the ASCII
character “ETX”, which is transmitted with MSB = 0 and thus represents the value 0x03. The reason for this is that only
the last byte of a message is not safeguarded by a handshake. The receiver must check the last byte to establish
whether it actually contains the value “ETX” on the basis of the earlier correctly received message length (something
which can be assumed with a handshake). If this is not the case, the receiver can take corresponding measures (see
Section 6.2).
The bytes of a message which are output by the transmitter are returned by the receiver byte-by-byte in complemented
form, i.e. the first byte of the transmitter results in the complemented first byte from the receiver (byte handshake). As a
result of this, the transmitter outputs the second byte to the receiver in turn, etc. Using this output form, the transmitter
immediately receives information from the receiver after every byte indicating whether the output byte has been correctly
received. In addition, the tester adapts itself to the processing speed of the control unit.

Fault detection within a message occurs in a similar way as for the communication setup, namely by means of a time-out
t7 max. This applies to both the control unit and the tester. If a time-out has been recognized, both tester and control unit
jump back to the start of the message. The transmitter allows a further time-out time unit to elapse before it starts
renewed output of the first byte (message length) in order to guarantee that a receiver time-out occurs under all
circumstances. The same reaction occurs if the transmitter receives an incorrect byte from the receiver. In this case, the
transmitter allows the time-out time to elapse twice before output of the first message byte takes place again.
The last byte of a message (=ETX) is not returned by the receiver. If the last byte is correctly received by the receiver, it
replies with output of the response message or, if no response message exists, with an acknowledgement (= message
“Acknowledge”).
If the receiver has not received an ETX after expiration of the time-out between bytes (= t7max), then it does not know
whether
In case b) or c), the transmitter will restart transmission of the original message after expiration of two t7 time-outs since
transmission of the penultimate byte of the message. In order to avoid a bus conflict, the receiver allows the time t8max
(= 2*t7max) to elapse. If a byte arrives during this time, this is the first byte of the message (repeated by the transmitter),
and the receiver treats this as a retry.
If the time t8max elapses without a byte being received the receiver concludes that the complement of the penultimate
byte was received by the transmitter and that it attempted ETX transmission (case a). Then the receiver can immediately
assume the transmitter function. The same reaction then occurs as for incorrect reception of the ETX byte (see next
section).
If the last byte is received incorrectly, the receiver has the possibility of having the just-received message repeated. For
this purpose, it transfers the message “no acknowledge” with the message number of the message to be repeated.
EXAMPLE: A message has been transferred from the transmitter to the receiver with the message counter “7” (content of
the second byte). The receiver does not recognize any “ETX” (last transmitted byte of a message). The
receiver (e.g. tester) then takes over the transmitter function by sending a “no acknowledge” message to the
control unit (now receiver). The message counter of the “no acknowledge” message is incremented by “1”
(old count = “7” + 1= “8” = new count). The message specific byte of the message contains the message
number of the message which is to be repeated (“7”). As a result, the receiver recognizes which message it
must repeat when it takes over the transmitter function.

The control unit (irrespective of whether currently functioning as transmitter or receiver) aborts communication if it
recognizes an error three times successively during the transmission of one message. After this, the control unit can
enter diagnosis mode again only as a result of renewed stimulation.
The telegram starts with the (first) message of the ECU ID. It can be terminated by the following conditions.
A constant interchange of transmitter and receiver functions occurs between the first and last message of a telegram, i.e.
message are continuously exchanged between the control unit and the tester, whereby the transmission direction of two
successive messages must never be the same. The Tester always has the role of Master, the Control Unit only transmits
messages in response to Tester requests. The interval between two messages must not exceed t9max. If this should
occur, the control unit aborts communication and waits for renewed stimulation by the tester.

If the control unit receives a message with an unknown message title, it transfers an “acknowledge” message to the
tester. The latter must then recognize that the control unit cannot interpret this message.

Physical data exchange between the control unit and tester consists of a message handshake with additional byte
handshake. The physical length (message length) of a message is limited.
A logic function, such as “output error memory” uses this message exchange for transfer of information. The logic
function is, however not bound to a single message but covers several communication messages.
• the limited number of data bytes which can be transmitted per message (quantity of information)
• the time limitation between tester request and control unit response message (function duration)
Functions, which require either more data or longer times than can be realized with one message exchange, are divided
up to several messages.
In this case, the physical message exchange takes place by the tester sending acknowledge messages to the control unit
after a request covering several messages until the control unit replies with an acknowledge message. Only then has the
function been completely executed and all data is transferred to the tester (see Figure 9):

NOTE: Polling of the control unit acknowledge message can be dispensed with:
• for functions which possess an exactly defined number of control unit response messages (e.g. ECU ID)
OR
• where the last control unit response message differs from all previous ECU response messages of this function (e.g.
speed sensor test).
In this case, the next tester request can follow directly after the last control unit response message.
