3. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

3.1. AFSE GENERAL FUNCTION

The Alternator Field Static Exciter (AFSE) panel provides DC excitation power to the alternator rotor coils through the
collector rings. Power is provided by truck batteries when initialization of power occurs or from the traction alterna-
tor AC single phase tertiary winding after power initialization. The AC tertiary power is converted to DC within the
AFSE and used for excitation power.

3.2. AFSE FUNCTION IN SYSTEM OPERATION

3.2.1. System Function Overview

The AFSE works in conjunction with other control components to provide alternator excitation and monitor the exci-
tation voltage and amperage. The 17FM466 AFSE panel (Figure 1) and the 17FM689 AFSE panel (Figure 2) function in
similar fashion for alternator excitation. The enhanced 17FM689 AFSE panel contains a dual SCR firing circuitry for
increased reliability and a control wire plug for ease in removal and replacement. The 17FM689 AFSE panel also
operates with enhanced control systems containing fewer support components.

Prior to the AFSE function in the system operation, understanding alternator operation basics is necessary. An alter-
nator's function is to convert mechanical engine power into electrical power. As an alternator converts more of the
engine mechanical power into electrical power, the engine is loaded and requires more fuel to maintain the same
RPM. Without additional fuel to the engine, an alternator can stall the engine unless the alternator demand is con-
trolled. The AFSE acts as part of the control system to control the horsepower demand on the engine at any engine
RPM.

The alternator consists of two main components, the rotating part called the rotor and the stationary part called the
stator. The rotor contains coils or fields (wraps of copper wire around an iron core) bolted onto the rotor shaft assem-
bly. Typically, eight coils bolted to the rotor shaft assembly making it an eight-pole rotor. The eight rotor coils are
electrically connected in series and receive power through the collector rings. The stator contains the main three
phase output windings and an extra single phase output winding called the tertiary winding. The stator three phase
windings output is used in the traction motor portion of the drive system and the single phase tertiary is used for
alternator excitation through the AFSE panel replacing the truck batteries after initial power up of the alternator
excitation.

To create power output on the alternator stator three phase and single phase tertiary windings, the rotor must be
powered for excitation. Rotor excitation will create a static magnetic field around the rotor. The diesel engine rotates
the rotor causing the magnetic field to pass through the stator windings. Electrical power is produced as the rotor
magnetic field passes though the stator windings. Without excitation power to the rotor, no electrical power will be
produced.

The AFSE panel controls the excitation power to the rotor. Higher power levels into the rotor excitation coils produces
higher output on the stator output windings. On initial power up of the alternator excitation power, truck batteries
are used to as excitation power to create low level outputs on the stator windings. The stator single phase tertiary is
used for excitation power to replace the truck batteries. The battery power is replaced by the tertiary power to con-
tinue higher level excitation.

The tertiary winding output is AC and must be rectified to DC before being used for alternator excitation. The AFSE
panel contains a full wave rectifier to convert the tertiary winding AC output to DC. The full wave bridge rectifier
within the AFSE panel has two SCR's allowing variable voltage control of the amount of tertiary AC power converted
to DC. The AFSE, with the tertiary power, can input more excitation power into the alternator rotor allowing higher
levels of power out of the stator windings.

4.1. GENERAL ALTERNATOR EXCITATION TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

Before extensive technical troubleshooting on AFSE components, check to ensure components are working cor-
rectly. Many checks are made through the Portable Test Unit (PTU) wPTU™ Toolbox. For detailed wPTU™ Toolbox
software operation, refer to the OHV wPTU™ TOOLBOX USER'S GUIDE publication listed in section 1.2., RELATED
PUBLICATIONS in this publication. Verify the following functions using the wPTU™ Toolbox:

Hazardous votages are present in this equipment. Ensure the Control Power switch
WARNING (CPS) is in the OFF position and the Generator Field Contactor (GFCO) switch is in the
CUTOUT position before attempting any work on control components. Check that

TIPS in this publication.

3. SCR3 turn on for battery power to the alternator excitation field. Check SCR3 control inputs to the Crow Bar/Batt
Boost card at terminal F and H on both 17FM466 and 17FM689. The input is zero to turn on SCR3. When battery
power has been successfully applied to the alternator excitation field, the input changes to more than 5 volts.
Set the digital mulitimeter to AC low voltage setting to measure the voltage.

4. SCR3 gate power is measured on the Crow Bar/Batt Boost card at terminal B and D. During SCR3 turn on for bat-
tery power, measure approximately 24 volts on the terminals. When zero volts are present, SCR3 is off. SCR3 is
shut off when approximately 300 volts AC is present on the tertiary winding.

5. If battery power is applied to the alternator excitation field without resulting in tertiary output, the SCR4 "crow-
bar" circuit may be energized. Normally the crowbar circuit activates when very high voltage spikes (above 1200
volts) are present on the alternator excitation field. Without power on the alternator excitation field there
wouldn't be high voltage spikes. To determine if the crowbar circuit has shorted the excitation field, measure the
output of the crowbar circuit on the Crow Bar/Batt Boost card. With control power off and CCL1 and CCL2 off,
disconnect wires from terminal connections A and G on the Crow Bar/Batt Boost card. Measure the ohms across
card terminals A and G and then reverse the ohmmeter leads on the terminals. If the ohm reading is zero
(shorted) then the SCR4 driver circuit on the Crow Bar/Batt Boost card has failed.

6. After battery boost, AC power is present in the tertiary winding. The frequency of the AC power is dependent on
the diesel engine RPM. The frequency feedback to PSC through PSC Analog Card (slot 6) is necessary for timing of
the firing pulses. On the 17FM466 AFSE panel systems, ASYN transformer supplies PSC with AC frequency. On
the 17FM689 AFSE panel systems, VAM1 supplies PSC with AC frequency. The feedback can be observed with
the PTU wPTU™ Toolbox on screen PSC Analog Inputs as ALTFVOLTS. If the screen voltage remains zero when the
tertiary has power, the feedback circuit or the PSC Analog Card (slot 6) is not functioning properly. Verify ASYN
operation and PSC Analog Card (slot 6) function on 17FM466 AFSE panel system. Verify VAM1 and PSC Analog
Card (slot 6) operation for 17FM689 AFSE panel.

7. PSC Analog Card (slot 6) creates firing pulses based on AC tertiary frequency. The firing pulses are connected to
Gate Firing Module (GFM) +2 and -1 on the AFSE panel. A flashing red LED on the pulse transformer indicates the
PSC Analog Card produced the firing pulses and the GFM conditioned the firing pulses. The red LED is at the
input to the pulse transformer. If the red LED is not flashing, an AC voltmeter connected to +2 and -1 terminals
on GFM will measure approximately 2 volts peak-to-peak signal from the PSC Analog Card. GFM output (black
and white wire) will read approximately 20 volts peak-to-peak.

8. The pulse transformer's output is approximately equal to the input.

4.3. SCR AND DIODE TEST PROCEDURES

4.3.1. SCR and Diode Ohmmeter Test

An ohmmeter may be used to check an SCR (SCR1, SCR2, SCR3, or SCR4) or diode (D1 or D2) as shown in Figure 4. This
test does not verify any power device operation at high voltage but will quickly determine if an SCR or diode is
shorted or a diode is open. For more extensive testing of power devices, the test procedures in the following sections
will better determine power device operation at high voltage

4.3.2. DC High Voltage SCR and Diode Test

High voltage may be applied to the cathodes and anodes of the AFSE panel SCR's and diodes for test purposes. A
calibrated High Potential (Hi-pot) instrument or calibrated high voltage power supply is used for this test. The hi-pot
device limits the current output while allowing high voltage to be applied to the test circuit. High voltages should not
be applied to low voltage components in the circuit due to possible damage to insulation resulting in a failed compo-
nent.

To Hi-pot test power devices in the AFSE panel:

All High Potential testing is considered hazardous. Strict safety precautions must be
WARNING taken to protect personnel from fatal or serious injury.

Hazardous votages are present in this equipment. Ensure the Control Power switch
WARNING (CPS) is in the OFF position and the Generator Field Contactor (GFCO) switch is in the
CUTOUT position before attempting any work on control components. Check that
Capacitor Charge Lights (CCL1 and CCL2) are not illuminated. Use a VOM to verify that
no voltage is present before touching any terminal. Failure to observe these precau-
tions may result in personal injury or death.

Observe polarities when making electrical checks and measurements. Polarity errors
WARNING may cause incorrect readings and damage components.

Do not Hi-pot low voltage components. Damage may occur to the electrical devices or
WARNING insulation causing failure.

1. Shutdown the truck and the GE control system following local procedures and safety practices.

2. Verify Capacitor Charge Lights (CCL1 and CCL2) are OFF.

3. Open the control cabinet access doors containing the AFSE panel. Verify with a voltmeter that voltage is not
present on AFSE panel power connections and any other exposed electrical devices or connection.

4. Mark and disconnect power and control wires from the AFSE panel connection lugs (DC+, DC-, AC1, AC2, and
Batt Boost). Refer to Figure 1 or Figure 2 to aid in identifying AFSE connection lugs.

5. The High-pot instrument or power supply must be connected to the AFSE connection lugs in the correct polarity
as described in Table 2. Connect the test device to the AFSE panel lugs connections listed in Table 2, apply the
voltage level listed in Table 2, and verify the maximum current leakage listed.

6. Remove the test device from the control when all tests are completed.

7. Connect power and control wires to the AFSE panel connection lugs (DC+, DC-, AC1, AC2, and Batt Boost). Refer
to Figure 1 or Figure 2 to aid in identifying AFSE connection lugs

4.4. CAPACITOR TEST

There is a capacitor/resistor circuit across the semiconductors SCR1, SCR2, D1, and D2. These capacitors may be
check for open or short circuit with a capacitor analyzer. The capacitor analyzer should have ohms scale ranges 0 to
10,000, 0 to 100,00, 0 to 1 meg, and 0 to 10 meg.

The capacitors C1, C2, C3, and C4 are located on the inside cover of the AFSE panel as shown in Figure 7 (section
6., SUMMARY DATA). The capacitors, as viewed in Figure 7, are C1 in the upper right, C2 in the upper left, C3 in the
lower left, and C4 in the lower right.

To check the capacitors:

1. Before testing the capacitors, discharge the capacitors through a 1000 ohm resistor across the terminals. Do
not touch the terminals or the resistor leads when connecting the resistor across each capacitor.

2. Complete the capacitor discharge by connecting a heavy wire across each of the capacitors terminals.

3. Disconnect one lead of each capacitor.

4. Set the capacitor analyzer to the highest resistance range.

5. Connect the probes of the analyzer to each of the capacitors. One of three indications will occur:

a. An OPEN capacitor will cause the analyzer to indication infinite resistance. The analyzer will not show any
deflection when connected to the capacitor.

b. A SHORTED capacitor will cause the analyzer to read zero resistance immediately. The analyzer will con-
tinue to short zero ohms until the test probes are removed from the capacitor terminals.

c. A GOOD capacitor will cause the analyzer to read toward or near zero and then deflect towards infinity as
the capacitor charges.

6. If initial tests are inconclusive, repeat the process from Step 1.

5. REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES

5.1. DIODE OR SCR REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

The replacement procedure for a diode or SCR (also called a PressPak* - Product of the General Electric Co.) is similar
except for the gate and auxiliary cathode leads. After disconnecting the gate and auxiliary cathode leads of an SCR,
the process is the same for replacement of both Presspaks.

Identification of failed a diode or SCR must be done while the semiconductor device is under mounting pressure.
Checking a device not mounted may result in failure testing. To identify failed Presspaks, refer to section 4.3., SCR
AND DIODE TEST PROCEDURES in this publication.

Once failed Presspaks are identified, the flange should be punctured on failed units as shown in Figure 5. Do not
remove or handle failed Presspaks until flange has been punctured. The flange may be punctured by a sharp punch
or the edge of a chisel tapped by a hammer.

The Presspaks (diode or SCR) must be replaced off the truck in an area that is clean. Contamination by oil, grease
(except specified grease), water, dust, or other debris during assembly may cause the repaired unit to fail soon after
replacement.

To replace a failed diode or SCR Presspak:

Hazardous votages are present in this equipment. Ensure the Control Power switch
WARNING (CPS) is in the OFF position and the Generator Field Contactor (GFCO) switch is in the
CUTOUT position before attempting any work on control components. Check that
Capacitor Charge Lights (CCL1 and CCL2) are not illuminated. Use a VOM to verify that
no voltage is present before touching any terminal. Failure to observe these precau-
tions may result in personal injury or death.

Some types of Presspaks (diode or SCR) failures cause gas to be generated internally
WARNING and pressurize the device. Puncture the Presspak flange prior to removing or handling
the Presspak to relieve internal pressure. Failure to do so may result in injury or death.

Replacement procedure must be followed for diode or SCR replacement. Failure to this
CAUTION procedure may result in repeat failure and secondary damage shortly after the equip-
ment begins operation.

NOTE: for replacement part numbers of Presspaks, refer to the parts catalogue. Part numbers are not provided
in maintenance publications.

1. Pierce the flange of the failed Presspak (diode or SCR) being replaced. Use a sharp punch or chisel edge tapped
by a hammer to pierce the flange (Figure 5).

2. If an SCR is being replaced, disconnect the gate and auxiliary cathode wires shown in Figure 5.

3. Loosen and remove the Presspak assembly hardware.

The heat sinks of the Presspaks are matched sets. Do not intercharge heat sinks
CAUTION between Presspaks. Presspaks must be assembled with matched heat sinks. Failure to
do so may result in premature repeat failures.

4. Carefully remove the failed device and discard all components that are contained in the replacement Presspak.

5. Wipe the mating surfaces with link free paper or cloth to remove any debris.

6. Ensure the mating surfaces are free of burrs or marred corners. To smooth burrs or irregular surfaces, carefully
use 400 to 600 grit sandpaper on mating surfaces. After fine sanding, clean mating surfaces with link free paper
or cloth to remove any debris.

7. Apply three to five drops of GE-SF1154 thermal oil or GE G322L silicone grease and spread across the mounting
mating surfaces including the replacement Presspak. Do not use thermal oil containing metal fillers in the mix.

8. Center the replacement device assembly on the roll pins. If an SCR unit is being installed, orient SCR unit leads
correctly.

Presspak units have an integral spring clamp (diamond shaped steel) that must be
CAUTION compressed evenly to a specific value. Even specific pressure allows the proper con-
ductivity without damage. Uneven or incorrect mounting pressure may cause repeat
failure of the unit shortly after replacement.

9. Tighten mounting bolts evenly to the integral spring clamp (Figure 6) by hand.

10. Alternately tighten mounting bolts ½ turn (180°) with a wrench for approximately 1 ½ turns.

11. With a straight edge or equivalent measurement gauge, check the compression across the integral spring
clamp a shown in Figure 6.

12. Alternately tighten the mounting bolts to achieve the correct compression measurement across the spring
shown in Figure 6.

13. The integral spring clamp should be parallel to the top of the plastic enclosure with less than 0.012 inches
(0.3048 mm) as shown in Figure 6.
