AE404 – Transmission Systems and Design

1) A car travels with the speed of 37.8 km/h and climbs a road gradient of 1 .5 % . At this moment, the
driver engages the second gear and the car has an acceleration of 1.4 m/s 2. Using the vehicle
parameters given below, calculate,
a. the force, torque and power required at the wheels,
b. the torque and the rotational speed at the input of the differential unit,
c. the torque, rotational speed and the power at the engine output shaft,
d. Using the BSFC map given below, graphically estimate the BSFC value of the engine at this moment.

e. Assume, in a different driving condition, an engine consumes 9 l/100 km of fuel, generates a

torque of 60 Nm and rotates at the speed of 3400 rpm. Calculate the BSFC value in g/kWh.
f. Why do we have the BSFC map of any engine? What does it tell us? Explain shortly.
