Physics Lens Lab Procedure

Part 1 - Determine Lens Focal Length

1) Select a CONVERGING lens for the optics kit

2) Mount the lens and a screen on the optical bench (refer to demonstration in class)

2) Set up the ray box to emit 5 parallel rays

3) Direct the rays through the lens towards the screen

4) Adjust the screen so that the 5 rays converge to a single position (focal point)

5) Record the measure of the focal length in Table 1

Part 2 - Collect Experimental Data

1) Mount the lens, the screen, and candle on the optical bench (refer to demonstration in class)

2) Conduct 5 trials using the values of do that were obtained in Part 2.

3) For each trial, calculate the experimental value of the focal length.

Part 4 - Data Analysis

Complete Table 3

Part 5 - Lab Report

Write a lab report incorporating all of the above.
