REVISED GUIDELINES FOR DRY LAB BIO150

Introduction to Lab Session of BIO150:

The lab activities of BIO150 are designed to complement with the syllabus so that student
could be exposed to biochemical technique and to apply the concepts and theories that have
been learned.

A full detailed written step-by-step lab instruction may not be provided. This is to encourage
student to participate in active learning during class and to correlate all the theories and
concepts presented in lectures.

The BIO150 lab session might challenge student at early stages in learning a complex skill
that includes initiation, trial and error.

Students are required to produce a written scientific lab report based on scientific
experiments. This specific task is related to the practical skills that requiring student to
perform (plan, conduct and analyse) scientific investigations in areas of biochemical
processes and cell division.

During Lab Video Simulation Session:

1) You should be a conscious, focus and have a lab notebook to jot down every act in
the video simulation.
2) Ask question if you have any, regarding the lab demonstration shown during
simulation video (use any medium suitable for you and your lecturer for discussion
e.g: Whattsap/telegram/ilearn/ufuture).

After Lab Video Simulation Session:

1) Select only one simulation video. You would have to submit a written scientific
laboratory report on week 10 (June 4, 2020 until June 5, 2020). Please refer to the
laboratory report checklist for formatting and contents.
2) You are required to include with precise information as follow in your scientific
laboratory report:

No. Contents Writing Guidelines/ Required Information

1 Introduction  A short introduction that provide a background of the
topics.
 State clearly about the objective, problem statement
and hypothesis of the experiment.
2 Apparatus &  List down all the apparatus, materials, samples,
Materials reagents or chemical, etc. Please be a detailed as
possible (e.g: amount, concentration etc).
3 Procedure  Provide a schematic diagram of the workflow of the
experiment.
 List down the entire step as complete as possible in
such that anyone can repeat the experiment.

1
4 Results  Provide a suitable figure/table/caption/datasheet for
the experiment.
 Acknowledge and put a reference if the figure is taken
from other sources.
5 Discussion  Discuss your result or technique used (if any) in the
experiment.
 Correlate the findings with any suitable concept and
theories that you have learned in class.
 Provide possible source of error and future
recommendation.
6 Conclusion  Provide a concise conclusion on the experiment.
 State whether hypothesis of experiment was
acceptable or not. Conclude based on objective.
7 References  Provide a list of reference according to APA style that
has been used in your lab report.

Video Simulation 01: CELLULAR RESPIRATION

A) Instruction:

1. Watch the simulation video of cellular respiration in yeast.

2. Write a lab report according to the given format.

B) Lab Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the type of cell respiration in the yeast.

2. Interpret the results of yeast reaction by using methylene blue as the artificial
hydrogen acceptor.

C) Apparatus and methods:

1. Use this link to watch the simulation video on cellular respiration of the yeast:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kobjT8hOqZ0

2. If you have another test tube with the same volume of yeast (lets label it with test
tube B), next you put it into boiling water for 5 minutes, then you put methylene blue
into it, predict what happen to the mixture after a few minutes and after vigorous
shaking.

3. You need to identify and refer any article/website related to the experiment of cellular
respiration to write a scientific report from the simulation video and include C) 2.

4. Use table below to record your expected result.

Table 1.0: Yeast reaction

Treatment Colour Observed Colour observed

Video Simulation 02: PHOTOSYNTHESIS

A) Instruction:

1. Watch the simulation video of separation of pigments by Chromatography.

2. Write a lab report according to the given format.

B) Lab Learning Objectives:

1. Prepare a chlorophyll extraction.

2. Identify the type of pigments in the leaves by using paper chromatography technique.

3. Calculate the Rf value each of the pigments.

C) Apparatus and methods:
