Pinoy Rap

As a safe space for artistic expression and collaboration, rap music in the Philippines  grew
from being a borrowed culture from the U.S. to forming its own sound, form of expression,
and identity.

Filipino rap proudly shows its cultural roots, from lyrical themes  and fashion, down to its
creative visual themes.

What was deemed to be the first recorded Filipino rap is comedian George Javier’s “Na
Onseng Delight” released in 1980—and considered as the first recorded Pinoy rap song—
which was a comedic parody of the 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang.

Rap was also made popular by such composers and performers as Francis Magalona (Mga
Kababayan Ko)34s, Andrew E (Humanap Ka ng Pangit)0s, and Gloc-9 (Lando)10s.

Francis Magalona
Born on October 4, 1964, was also known as Francis M, “Master Rapper” and “The Man From
Manila”. He is often hailed as the “King of Pinoy Rap” and is considered a legend in the
Philippine music community.

As times changed and Pinoy rap music gained more commercial success, its content evolved
from containing problematic humor [Editor’s note: to say the least] into themes that dwelled
on the variations of Filipino experiences and narratives. More and more rappers begin
sharing their reflections on their personal lives—challenges and triumphs alike.
As Filipino rappers like Gloc-9, Francis Magalona, Andrew E., Bassilyo, and a handful of others
helped pioneer a music scene for today’s generation of Filipino hip hop artists, rap music in this
Southeast Asian country has been on a rise since the 1990s.
Although you may not think it, Filipino hip hop music is the biggest music genre throughout the
Philippines with at times the genre being referred as “Pinoy Hip Hop.”  It is largely believed that the
Philippines was the first Asian country to adopt hip hop music from the United States and helped
bring its appeal to the rest of Asia, solidifying it as an important genre for Filipino musicians and
artists.
