BACKGROUND

the style developed during parties in the 70s called “block


parties” when DJs played percussive beats of popular songs using
2 turntables to extend the breaks which further evolved into
SAMPLING TECHNOLOGY and DRUM MACHINES
RAPPING developed into a vocal style in which the artists speaks
along an instrumental/synthesized beat.

RAPPER’S DELIGHT - is said to be the first most commercially


successful rap single s which was released in 1979 by the
SUGARHILL GANG

one of the earliest rappers DJ COOL HERC - a Jamaican


immigrant who started delivering rap during parties (toasting)

DYORDS JAVIER

Based on unofficial web articles, his song "Na-Onseng Delight" is


the first rap/hip hop song recorded in the Philippines.

Dyords Javier (born George Javier) is a Filipino singer, stand-up


comedian, actor and hip-hop artist in the Philippines.

He is the brother of Danny Javier (APO Hiking Society) and the


originator of Pinoy hip hop in the Philippines.

He is also part of a vocal group called ANG4 or ANGForgettables


(with Isay Alvarez of Miss Saigon fame, Bimbo Cerrudo and Pinky
Marquez).

A former director of Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit or


OPM.

Javier was also part of the first Filipino noontime show Student
Canteen.
VINCENT DAFALONG

Vincent Quilet, more popularly known as Vincent Daffalong, is


considered one of the pioneers of Philippine rap. Given the
distinct shape of his nose, Vincent was eventually called
Daffalong, a term coined from the Filipino phrase dapa ang ilong
(flat-nosed).
CHARACTERISTICS OF PINOY RAP

● Filipino rap is heterogeneous, diverse in character or content


● encompassing rap in numerous languages such as Tagalog,
Chavacano, and Ilocano, as well as English.
● The musical style has become as diverse as hip-hop music
itself with such subgenres as "Kalye" (Street), "Masa"
(Commercial), "Makabayan"(Ethnocentric/Socially
conscious), Gangsta, and underground rap.
● The Philippines is considered by many to have developed the
first hip hop scene in all of Asia and the Pacific Islands.

FRANCIS MAGALONA

● FrancisM popularly known in the Pinoy Rap scene as the King


of Pinoy Rap
● His debut album YO - with popular track MGA KABABAYAN

● His 2nd album RAP IS FRANCISM is regarded as one of his
his best rap albums that tackles several
cultural/political/sociological issues of the country like the
tracks Halalan, Mga Praning, Tayo’y Mga Pinoy
● Freeman was released the following year, 1995, and firmly
established Magalona's legitimacy in the Pinoy music scene.
Tracks like "Three Stars & A Sun", "Kabataan Para Sa
Kinabukasan" (Children For The Future)
● "Suckin' on Helium/Kaleidoscope World" would become
defining touch-points in Magalona's body of work
● "Kaleidoscope World" went on to win 1996 Awit Award for
Best Produced Record of the Year, and the 1996 NU 107
Rock Award for Song of the Year.

RAPASIA

● the tri-lingual rap group Rapasia released their self-titled


debut record in 1991, garnering the hit "Hoy! Tsismosa".
● One of the earliest Filipino hip hop groups to embrace such
an abstract format, the album's lyrical content often
contained a mixture of various Philippine languages
(including Tagalog and Chavacano) along with English.
● Rapasia's members included Martin "Bronx" Magalona,
brother of Pinoy rap entrepreneur Francis Magalona. The
other two members are Filipino-American, Ronald Jamias
a.k.a. Ronski J and the Tausug born Ben Mohammad a.k.a.
Brother BM
ANDREW E.

● achieved prominence during the 1990s


● formerly Los Angeles-based DJ Andrew E (born Andrew
Espiritu),
● "Humanap Ka Ng Pangit" and "Makati Girl" (as done by
Norman B. of Bass Rhyme Posse; the first Pinoy rap track
recorded to contain beatboxing)
● Andrew E's 1991 hit "Humanap Ka Ng Pangit" was the first
to spawn a plethora of response records from other rappers
in the country, such as Michael V's "Maganda Ang Piliin".
● The rapper's ability to combine unique storytelling with
raunchy and humorous wordplay laced with catchy beats
made Andrew the first of his kind in the genre.
● He then went on to release a movie entitled Andrew Ford
Medina: Huwag Kang Gamol in 1991 which was the first film
in the Philippines to include a full-on freestyle battle on
screen.
● By the mid-1990s he had established his own record label,
the controversial Dongalo Wreckords, as well as many
successful rap groups, including Cebuano rappers The Anthill
Mobb, Madd Poets and Bicolano rappers Salbakuta
DEATH THREAT

● is a hip-hop group who pioneered the gangsta rap subgenre


in the Philippines. The group is known for their explicit lyrics,
violent lifestyles and everyday street life
● Their self titled debut album Death Threat went gold and
produced the hit "Gusto Kong Bumaet (Pero 'Di Ko Magawa)
which told tales of the daily lives of the young impoverished
Filipino youth growing up in the city streets and slum areas.
● Their second became even bigger, passing the double
platinum mark and producing the hit single "Ilibing ng Buhay
(Ang Mga Sosyal)" with Pooch of Ghetto Doggs from the
album Death Threat:Wanted.

GLOC 9

● Aristotle Pollisco (born 18 October 1977), known by his


stage name Gloc-9
● is an Awit Award-winning Filipino rapper - UPUAN song of
the year 2012
● His fast-flowing vocal style has made him one of the most
successful hip-hop artists in the Philippines
● He was described by fellow Filipino rapper Francis Magalona
as "a blacksmith of words and letters, and a true Filipino
poet.”
● He has collaborated on almost a dozen songs with other OPM
artists; "Lando" with the late Francis M, "Upuan" with
Jaezelle, "Bagsakan" with Parokya ni Edgar , "Baon" with
Gab Chee Kee of Parokya ni Edgar and Francis M, and
"Sari-Saring Kwento" with Noel Cabangon and Champ Lui
Pio.
● His songs mostly tackle social issues such as social
injustices, poverty and patriotism.
● He began his musical career with the gangsta rap group

FLIP TOP

● FlipTop Battle League is the first and largest professional rap


battle conference in the Philippines,
● founded by Alaric Riam Yuson (known as Anygma) and
Romeo Borrondia (known as RYME B) in 2010.
● The league promotes Pinoy hip hop.
● FlipTop is heavily influenced by the original rap battle
leagues in the West founded in 2008 – Grind Time Now, King
of the Dot and Don't Flop, which inspired the creation of
FlipTop and other battle leagues around the world.
● In general, the contest consists of three rounds with a time
limit for each contender set by the referee.

● Overtime is applied if the battle is a draw.

● The first turn is determined by a toss coin.

● Scripted or non-scripted bars are allowed.

● Profanities and insults are allowed in the battle provided that


contenders must not take it seriously or personally especially
off-stage.

● Both sides can also bring props for the event.

● Filipino language is the primary medium although other


languages or dialects can be used.

● The winner is determined by the decision of the judges. The


criteria for judging are the usage of words, audience impact,
delivery, and rapping style.
ABRA

● His career started as a member of Pinoy hip hop group


Lyrically Deranged Poets (LDP) in 2010.
● He joined the Fliptop Battle League as Abra.
● They released their independent debut album, The Project in
2009, and had their first major concert at the Music Museum
in 2010.
● LDP was awarded Best Urban Group at both the 2010 and
2011 Urban Music Awards, among other
nominations.[citation needed] In 2011, LDP was granted TV
air time on myx for the music video of their song, "Here to
Own It", which was able to enter the charts. He is also a
major icon in the Fliptop battle league, as well as a co-host
on PTV 4's show iConnect.
● Abra was one of the first battle emcees to compete and
gradually make a name for himself.
● Abra has been considered as one of the heavyweights in
Filipino rap battling.
● Using his compelling lyrical style coupled with witty antics,
● YouTube videos that have amassed millions of views.
● In 2013, Abra and his label Artifice Records signed a major
distribution deal with Ivory Music & Video
● Raymond Abracosa, better known as Abra, is a Filipino hip
hop artist and occasional actor.
● He gained popularity in his song "Gayuma".
● The music video for the song shows Abra being given a
potion only to realize that his love interest is in fact
transgender.
● When the video reached more than 26 million views on
YouTube, it was hailed as the highest number generated by
any local artist
