Hip-hop in the Philippines
The Philippines is known to have had the first hip hop music scene in Asia since the early 1980s,
largely due to the country's historical connections with the United States where hip hop originated. 
 Filipino hip-hop or Pinoy hip-hop (Pinoy rap)
- is a hip-hop music performed by musicians of Filipino descent overseas,
especially by Filipino-Americans.
 Francis Magalona and Andrew E. are among the
most influential rappers in the Philippines being
the first to release mainstream rap albums.

Ventura and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes and
N.E.R.D are among the contemporary Filipino-

Golden Age of Pinoy hip-hop, 1990’s (OG/ Legends)


 As said to be started by Francis M. with his debut album, Yo! (1990) which included the
nationalistic hit “Mga Kababayan” in which he became a superstar.
 Followed by Andrew E. who released his first song “Humanap ka ng Pangit” in 1990 and
Michael V. with the release of his first song “Maganda ang Piliin” in 1991.
 Followed by rapid stylistic innovations beginning in 1991 with the establishment of Disco Mix
Club Philippines which was one of the earliest platforms for Philippine DJ mixing battles which
leaded by DJs Carlo Talo, Noel Macanaya, Rod “DVS” Torres and Omar Lacap and others.
 Lists of some of the known rap artists in 1990’s; Francis M, Andrew E., Michael V., Martin “The
Bronxman” Magalona, Mastaplann, Deathreat, members of the Dongalo Wreckords such as
Salbakuta, Mad Poet and others.

The Rise of Philippine Hip-hop scene, 2000’s (Old School)


 During this era, Filipino hip-hop rivalled Pinoy rock’s traditional popularity amongst Filipino
youth. Many rap artists have released rap albums which leaded by both Francis Magalona and
Andrew E.
 Well-known rap competition during this era; Rappublic of the Philippines, Rap Olympics
 Some of the famous rap groups are the ff.; Salbakuta, Deathreat, BB-clan, Mobbstarr,
Stickfiggas, Gagong Rapper, Crazy as Pinoy and others.
Fliptop Battle League, Trap Genre, Second Golden Age 2010’s (New School)
 The influence of the original rap battle leagues in the West such as “Grind Time Now” (US), “King of the Dot
(Canada) and “Don’t Flop” (UK) which are all founded in 2008.
 Inspired the creation of other battle leagues around the world, “Fliptop” (Philippines) being one of them in
2010 and being founded by Alaric Yuson “Anygma”. The local rap battle competition typically involves both
parties (either 2 rappers or 2 duos).
 Some of popular artists who participate in Fliptop include Loonie, Zaito, Dello, Batas, Target, Abra, Sinio and
others.
 By 2015, several prominent trap and hip-hop recording artists emerged with notable hits. Some of the
popular artists which carries styles mixed with RnB associated with trap beats influenced by Western hip-
hop nowadays includes Ex Batallion, Shantidope, Nik Makino, Skusta Clee, Flow G, ALLMOST and others.
