Group 1: PHILIPPINE ROCK
• 1973- birth of Philippine or Pinoy Rock music which successfully merged
the rock beat with Filipino lyrics.
• It was introduced by the legendary Juan de la Cruz Band (with their song
Ang Himig Natin) which had for its members Joey “Pepe” Smith, Wally
Gonzales, and the originator of Jeproks, Mike Hanapol, who later became
a major symbol of Pino.y Rock
Group 2: FOLK MUSIC
• This new form of music is combined with ethnic instrumentation with
electronic accompaniment, while presenting themes or issues of society and
the environment.
• Filipino Composers:
- Freddie Aguilar : ANAK
- Yoyoy Villame: MAGELLAN
- Florante: AKO”Y ISANG PINOY
- Gary Granada: KA BAYANI
Group 3: PINOY RAP
• This music genre then joined the mainstream raising Pinoy’s King of
Rap, Francis Magalona. He is known as the Master Rapper and The
Man From Manila.
• It was made popular by famous composers:
- Francis Magalona: Mga Kababayan Ko, Watawat
- Andrew E: Humanap Ka ng Pangit
Group 4: POP MUSIC
• POP is derive from the word “Popular Original Pilipino Music before
originally referred only to Philippine pop songs, more particularly ballads.
• Has been showcased in a Live Band scene or Concert.

-Regine Velasquez - Gary Valenciano
-Ogie Alcasid - Martin Nievera
Group 5: PHILIPPINE JAZZ
• Jazz Music came to the Philippines in 1921, with the help of Cebuano named
Luis Borromeo.
• This music is accompanied by different instruments like piano, violin,
trumpets, drum and etc..
