PHILIPPINE POPULAR MUSIC
• It was a mix of rock, folk and ballads making
political use of music similar to early hip hop
but transcending class.
• The music was a “conscious attempt to create
a Filipino national and popular culture” and it
often reflected social realities and problems.
ORIGINAL PILIPINO MUSIC (OPM)
- Original Pilipino Music, now more commonly known as
Original Pinoy Music, Original Philippine Music or OPM for
short, originally referred to Philippine pop songs, particularly
ballads, that were popular in the Philippines during the late
70’s to the present.
- OPM artists such as Rico Puno Jr., Ryan Cayabyab, and
Celeste Legaspi in the 70’s, and Regine Velaquez, Sharon
Cuneta, Martin Nievera, Pops Fernandez, among many
others led the way in the 80’s and 90’s.
EXAMPLES:
• Forevermore - This song is one of the biggest hits
of Side A, a Filipino pop band formed in 1985 that
have been realeased in the year 1995.

• Set You Free - Have been realeased in the year


2008 and the Genre is Folk Music.

• Your Love - Realeased in 2005. Genre is Pop


Music.
PHILIPPINE POP MUSIC
• Pinoy Pop or P-pop (also known as Philippine pop or
Pilipino pop) refers to a contemporary pop music in the
Philippines originating from the OPM genre. with its
beginnings in the late 1970’s, Pinoy pop is a growing
genre in year of the 2020’s. Through the 1990’s to the
2000’s, Pinoy pop was regularly showcased in the live
band scene.
EXAMPLES:
• Nosi Balasi - This popular Tagalog-language song is by
the band Sampaguita.
• Mamang Sorbetero - (Mister Ice-Cream) is a popular
Tagalog song in the Philippines.
• Anak
• Sino ang Tunay na Baliw?
• Nandito Ako
• Mula Aparri
PHILIPPINE JAZZ
• In the Philippines, jazz music was first
introduced in the 1920’s during the American
colonial period.
• It is considered an American cultural legacy to
the country. The various styles of jazz that
developed in America were also echoed in the
Philippine music scene.
3 Aspects to know well the Philippine Jazz
1. Jazz is born in New Orleans - Jazz was born in New Orleans in
the early 20th century, but its roots can be found in the musical
traditions of both Africa and Europe.
2.Jazz has grown to be loved worldwide since its inception in New
Orleans during the turn of the century. The Philippines has always
been a home for Jazz in Asia.
~ Jazz as an expressive and improvisational music has found
affinity to the traits of being a Filipino.
3.The Philippines was once the ‘Jazz Capital of Asia’. Philippine
International Jazz & Arts Festival Foundation is a non-profit
foundation with a vision to promote Philippine Jazz and Arts through
the organization of an International Festival.

PHILIPPINE ALTERNATIVE FOLK MUSIC
• This new form combined ethnic instrumentation with
electronic accompaniment, while presenting themes or
issues of society and the environment.
• Some of the Filipino composers who championed this
style were Joey Ayala, Grace Nono, and
• Freddie Aguilar, best known for his song Anak; Yoyoy
Villame, composer of Magellan;
• Florante, composer of Ako’y Isang Pinoy; and Gary
Granada, composer of Ka Bayani.

~Leron Leron Sinta - is one of the most popular
Tagalog folk songs in the Philippines.
~Magtanim ay Di Biro - “Planting is no joke” is a
well-known tagalog folk song in the Philippines!
~Bahay Kubo - You didn’t have a Filipino childhood
if you can’t sing the Bahay Kubo song!
PINOY RAP
~ Filipino hip-hop or Pinoy hip hop (also
known as Pinoy Rap) is hip hop music
performed by musicians of Filipino descent,
both in the Philippines and Overseas,
especially by Filipino-Americans.
Who is the First Filipino Rapper in the
Philippines?
• The late Francis Magalona released the first
ever mainstream rap album Yo!, which
included the nationalistic hit “Mga
Kababayan”. He became an instant superstar
and the first rap icon in the Philippines.
