Description Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is a shrub which grows in the deserts of Mexico,
California and Arizona, and is cultivated in other parts of the world as well. The shrub
is a real miracle when it comes to survival – it has to cope with night temperatures
between 0 and 5 °C, as well as temperatures up to 45 °C during day time. The shrub
(which heights up to 3 meters), has very long roots, up to 4 m, which can reach water-
containing parts. Despite the extreme temperatures and drought, it can reach ages
over 200 years.
Originally one mistakenly thought that the species came from China, which is reflected
in the name Buxus chinensis. The name Jojoba is derived from the Indian word
‘Jojowi’
The jojoba seeds contain 40 – 62 % of an oil, which has a quite unique composition. It
does not have the triglyceride structure which is usually found in vegetable oils, but it
consists of very long straight-chain wax ester. It is known for its remarkable high
stability to oxidation. In cosmetics, it is highly appreciated for its moisturising
properties.
Jojoba oil primarily consists of wax esters of fatty acids and fatty alcohols. Aborementioned values are
obtained from the literature and own measurements and are given for information only. Above
information may not be considered as a specification. Being a natural product, FA profiles are subject
to seasonal influences, deviations can occur without being related to product quality.

Handling As with all vegetable oils, after opening, the headspace above the oil should be
replaced by an inert gas (nitrogen or argon) before the packaging is to be resealed.

Storage and shelf life The product should be stored in original, unopened containers. Keep in a cool
(< 25 °C), dark and dry store room. At low storage temperatures, the oil may solidify.
Allow to warm to room temperature and stir gently, this will resolve the effect. Shelf life
is 18 months after manufacturing when stored under the above-mentioned conditions
in original unopened packaging. Expiry date can be adapted after re-analysis.
