DEFINITION OF TERMS

Alcohol Lamp - used in a science lab for heating, combustion, and


sterilization.
Beaker - A beaker is a cylindrical piece of glassware that is marked with
gradations that are used for measuring liquid volumes. Beakers are such
an essential piece of laboratory glassware, they even make a beaker
coffee mug for all of us lab enthusiasts.

Bioplastic - Bioplastics are plastic materials produced from renewable


biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw,
woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste, etc.

Cling wrap- thin, clear plastic that is used to wrap food or to cover
containers that have food in them.

Denatured alcohol - often abbreviated as “alcohol denat.” or “SD


Alcohol” on ingredient lists — shows up in a lot of household products,
from pharmaceuticals to paint remover. It kills germs, which is why it’s
used in hand sanitizers and cleaning products, and is highly flammable,
so it makes great fuel for camping stoves.

Funnel-a utensil that is usually a hollow cone with a tube extending from
the smaller end and that is designed to catch and direct a downward
flow.

Glycerin - Glycerin, also known as glycerol, is a natural compound


derived from vegetable oils or animal fats. It’s a clear, colorless,
odorless, and syrupy liquid with a sweet taste.

Gloves-a covering for the hand having separate sections for each of the
fingers and the thumb and often extending part way up the arm.
Graduated Cylinder- a tall narrow container with a volume scale used
especially for measuring liquids.

Goggles-primary protectors intended to shield the eyes against liquid or


chemical splash, irritating mists, vapors, and fumes.
Jicama - is a root vegetable with thick, brown skin. It's white inside and
tastes like an apple but not as sweet. It’s a bit like a potato but with a lot
fewer carbs.

Knife-A utensil that has a handle and a blade that may or may not be
sharp-edged. Available in a wide variety of different types and sizes, a
knife is used for cutting, chopping, dicing, slicing, mincing, peeling,
separating, and other kitchen tasks where the thin metal shaft of a blade
is of value for food preparation.

Labaratory Tripod- a three-legged platform used to support flasks and


beakers.

Petri dish-variants or less commonly Petri dish. plural petri dishes also
Petri dishes. : a small shallow usually round dish of thin glass or plastic
with a loose cover used especially for growing cells or microorganisms
on a supportive medium (such as agar combined with nutrients)

Spatula-a kitchen utensil that has a broad flat part with narrow holes in
it, attached to a long handle, used for turning and lifting food when
cooking

Strainer- a device (such as a sieve) to retain solid pieces while a liquid


passes through.

Tupperware-used for plastic food storage containers with tight-fitting


lids.

Vinegar - is a combination of acetic acid and water made by a two-step


fermentation process. First, yeast feed on the sugar or starch of any
liquid from a plant food such as fruits, whole grains, potatoes, or rice.
This liquid ferments into alcohol.
Water - a substance composed of the chemical elements hydrogen and
oxygen and existing in gaseous, liquid, and solid states. It is one of the
most plentiful and essential of compounds. A tasteless and odourless
liquid at room temperature, it has the important ability to dissolve many
other substances.

Weighing Scale-A scale or balance is a device used to measure weight


or mass.

Wire gauze- is a gauze woven of metal wire, or very fine, gauze-like


wire netting. Wire gauze is placed on the support ring that is attached to
the retort stand between a burner and glassware, or is placed on a tripod
to support beakers, flasks, or other glassware to protect it during heating.
