TEST 01
TASK 1.

Read a part of a letter from the bus service manager, John Smith

“….You have not used bus services for a time. Is there anything you feel
dissatisfied with our services? Can you recommend some valuable suggestions to
improve our system?....”

Write a letter to answer him. In your letter, you should:

• tell him/her why you have not used bus services recently

• Describe what you feel satisfied and dissatisfied with the bus system

• Suggest some solutions to improve the services

Dear Mr. Smith,

Thank you very much for your letter. I am one of your loyal customers, and now I am
writing in connection with to express some things about your bus services.

To begin, I would like to apologize for not using your services recently because my
working time has been changed. I have to go to work earlier in the morning and finish
later in the afternoon now, and at that time, there are no bus services.

Then, if I have to say what I like most about your bus system, I would have to say that
I like the price a lot. Indeed, the cost of a bus ticket is reasonable and suitable for a
student who has a tight budget like as. Moreover, the second thing I like about the bus
system is that it is safe for passengers. However, there are some things that I feel
dissatisfied. It is usually stuck in a traffic jam during rush hours. One more important
problem is that the buses sometimes arrive late, which negatively affects my work.

Regarding some possible solutions, I suggest that you should work with your staff,
especially the drivers, to request them to respect the schedule.

I hope my suggestion will help you to improve your bus service. Thank you for
spending time considering my ideas.

Yours sincerely,

Windy Wang

TASK 2

One way to solve the problem of congestion in cities is to build sky trains which run
overhead rather than on or under the ground.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using this solution to solve
congestion?

In recent decades, with the fast development of technology, it has become much easier
than ever to own a private means of transport, leading to overcrowded streets in big
cities worldwide. Therefore, an effective way to solve this problem seems to be a
priority policy that both governments and citizens have been seeking, and one of the
suggestions is to build a sky train system. In fact, using this solution to solve
congestion brings not only benefits but also several drawbacks.

On the one hand, there is no doubt that building sky trains has undeniable advantages
in solving traffic jams in big cities. The first and foremost positive aspect of an
elevated railway is that it leaves enough space for the construction of other transport
systems. Undoubtedly, at least two public transport systems are operated parallelly in
one area if one of them is built overhead. It means that more commuters are served,
and traffic congestion will be solved. Secondly, this kind of mass transit transports at
the highest speed with reliable schedules; besides, it offers professional services and is
installed with comfortable high-quality seats. These things can attract more users
while simultaneously minimizing the number of private vehicles on the streets and
eventually reducing traffic congestion.

On the other hand, constructing a system of sky trains has some drawbacks that can
not be overlooked. The first negative aspect of this solution is its exorbitantly
expensive cost. Undoubtedly, it needs humungous costs for high-quality materials,
modern technology, and experienced workers to construct and operate a good
overhead tube. In addition, safety is another concern. Since the tubes move on narrow
concrete paths, it is considered an extremely unsafe mode of conveyance. In addition
to these risk factors, emergency evacuation is not always possible in the event of a
mishap.

In conclusion, it is clear that every coin has two sides. Thus, sky trains are certainly
more effective than surface or underground trains in easing traffic congestion in cities;
however, their downsides cannot be overlooked.
