This language is a universal language used in various fields such as business, education,
technology, and entertainment. Therefore, it is important for us to learn English. By
understanding and understanding how to use English besides being able to add insight and
knowledge we can also communicate well with other nations in the world, as well as other
benefits in everyday life such as listening to foreign radio, and being able to listen to/watch
movies/ science videos, thus we can master knowledge in several fields according to what we
learn.
And passive voice is a one part of English grammar. Voice refers to the characteristics
of a verb that tells whether the subject of the verb is performing the action of the verb (active
voice) or whether the subject of the verb is acted upon (passive voice). The subject in an
active voice will be the object or argent in passive voice. That is why only sentences with
transitive verb whose voice can be transformed into active or passive. So with this papers we

CHAPTER II

4
A. Definition
Passive voice is a form of verb to performance that the subject is a suffering sentence
because work or action. Passive voice is that form of verb how that something is done to the
person or thin denoted by the subject. In passive voice the person not rather interesting to
performs. There are two kinds of verbs, transitive and intransitive. the verbs that need objects
are called transitive, while others are intransitive. It is only transitive verbs are used passive.

Active voice (active voice) is a sentence where the subject does the work, on the contrary,
passive voice (passive voice) is a sentence where the subject is subject to work by the object
of the sentence. Active voice is more often used in everyday life compared to passive voice.
However, we often find passive voice in newspapers, articles in magazines and scientific
writings. Passive voice is used because the object of the active voice is more important
information than the subject.
B. Function
The following are some of the functions of the passive voice in English:
1. Be a clear explanation or describe the process.
2. Being an affirmation in a news or news, makes it feel more objective.
3. Become an introduction in letters, reports, essays, or other formal activities.

C. characteristic of passive voice

The following are the characteristics of passive sentences in English:

 Always contains to be + verb 3.

 Usually there is the word by (by) which functions to describe the actor or subject,
although this is optional or not always available.
 There are always objects.
 Verbs or verbs in the passive voice are transitive verbs, aka verbs that require objects,
such as pull, bring, love, change, make, and others.
 Especially for progressive sentences (present, past, past perfect, future, past future,
and past future perfect continuous, you need to add 'being' in front of verb3). If
"being" is not added, the tension will change, not progressive.
For example :
Active : We fertilize the soil every 6 months.
Passive: The soil is fertilized by us every 6 months.

From the sentence above it can be seen several points:

1. Object of the active voice (the soil) becomes the subject of the passive voice.

5
2. The subject of the active voice (we) becomes the object of the passive voice. Note
also that there has been a change from the subject pronoun 'we' to the object pronoun
'us'.
3. Verb1 (fertilize) in active voice becomes verb3 (fertilized) in passive voice.
4. Added be 'is' in front of verb3. The be used depends on the subject passive voice and
the tenses used.
5. Added the word 'by' behind verb3. However, if the object of the passive voice is
considered unimportant or unknown, then the object is usually not stated and neither
is the word 'by'.

from the example above it can be concluded that the formula for passive voice is:
Subject + be + Verb3 + by + Object

 Passive : This plant is watered by her every two days.

2. If the active voice is in the past perfect tense, then the passive voice 'be' is been
which is placed after the auxiliary had, so it becomes “had been”.
Example:

 Passive : They had been met by him before I came.
Active : She had watered this plant for 5 minutes when I got here.

Active : She will have been watering this plant.
