Week 1: Introduction to the NGO

During the first week of our social internship, we engaged in a Google Meet session with the NGO we
are working with. The purpose of this interaction was to gain a better understanding of our duties and
responsibilities as interns.

The Google Meet session was a productive and informative session that allowed us to connect with
the representatives of the NGO remotely. The session began with a warm welcome and introductions
from both the NGO staff and the interns. It was a great opportunity to get to know each other and
establish a rapport. The NGO representatives provided us with a detailed overview of the
organization’s mission, vision, and ongoing projects. They highlighted the importance of the NGO’s
work in addressing various social issues and improving the lives of marginalized communities. This
initial introduction helped us develop a deeper understanding of the NGO’s values and goals.

Furthermore, the NGO outlined our specific roles and responsibilities as interns. They emphasized the
importance of our contribution to the organization and the communities they serve. Our duties
included conducting surveys, raising awareness about CLEANLINESS AND HYGIENE in both rural
and urban areas and organizing a cleaning drive in both rural and urban areas.

To ensure a smooth workflow and effective collaboration, the NGO assigned a supervisor to each
intern. These supervisors will provide guidance, support, and regular feedback throughout the
duration of the internship. They encouraged us to approach our supervisors with any questions or
concerns we may have, promoting an open and communicative environment. In addition to our
responsibilities, the NGO informed us about the upcoming events and projects that we would be
involved in. They emphasized the significance of adhering to deadlines and maintaining a high level
of professionalism throughout our work.

Overall, the first week of the social internship was a valuable experience. The Google Meet session
with the NGO provided us with a comprehensive understanding of our duties and responsibilities. It
allowed us to establish a connection with the organization and set the foundation for a successful
internship. We are excited to contribute our skills and knowledge to make a positive impact through
this internship in the coming weeks.

2
Week 2: Survey and Awareness

During the second week of our social internship, we continued our efforts in promoting cleanliness
and hygiene by conducting surveys and raising awareness about diseases caused by poor cleanliness
practices in rural (fig:(a)) and urban (fig:(b)) areas of Kumarnichiga of Dibrugarh. Our focus was on
gathering more data through surveys and educating communities about the health risks associated
with unclean environments.

We prepared a questionnaire addressing various aspects of cleanliness. The questionnaire aimed to

gather information and insights from individuals regarding their cleanliness practices and behaviours.
The process of preparing the questionnaire involved careful consideration of the topics to be covered
and the specific questions to be asked. We brainstormed and conducted research to identify key areas
related to cleanliness that would provide us with valuable data. Some of the areas we focused on
included waste management, personal hygiene, sanitation facilities, and knowledge about the health
risks associated with poor cleanliness.

The questionnaire covered a range of topics, including:

1. Waste Management:

 How do you dispose of your household waste?

 Does the municipality garbage truck arrive at your location?
 Are you aware of recycling practices? If yes, do you actively participate in recycling
programs?

2. Personal Hygiene:

 How frequently do you wash your hands?

 Do you follow proper handwashing techniques?
 How often do you take a bath or shower?

3. Sanitation Facilities:

 What types of sanitation facilities are available in your community?

3
 Are the sanitation facilities well-maintained and accessible to all community members?

4. Health Risks:

 Are you aware of the health risks associated with poor cleanliness practices?
 Have you or anyone in your family experienced any health issues related to unclean
environments?

By asking these questions, we aimed to gather insights into the current state of cleanliness practices in
the community and identify areas that require improvement. The questionnaire would serve as a
valuable tool for assessing the effectiveness of our awareness campaigns and interventions, as well as
for tracking any changes in behaviour or knowledge over time.

The results of the survey on cleanliness provided valuable insights into the current state of cleanliness
practices in the community. Here are some potential outcomes and findings that arise from the survey:

1. Knowledge and Awareness Levels: The survey will assess the community’s knowledge and
awareness about cleanliness and hygiene practices. It will help identify the level of
understanding regarding waste management, personal hygiene, and the health risks associated
with poor cleanliness. The results indicated areas where awareness and education efforts are
needed.

2. Behaviour and Practices: The survey provided information about the actual cleanliness
behaviours and practices of individuals in the community. It reveals how frequently people
engage in proper waste disposal, handwashing, and personal hygiene routines.

3. Infrastructure and Facilities: The survey gather data on the availability and accessibility of
sanitation facilities in the community. It helps identify any issues or deficiencies in
infrastructure that may hinder proper cleanliness practices. The results highlight the need for
improvements in sanitation facilities or the importance of ensuring equitable access for all
community members.

4
4. Challenges and Barriers: The survey uncovers the challenges and barriers faced by individuals
when it comes to maintaining cleanliness. It could reveal factors such as lack of resources,
cultural beliefs, or limited awareness that contribute to poor cleanliness practices.
Understanding these challenges will help inform strategies to overcome them and promote
positive behaviour change.

Also, during the second week of our internship, a significant focus of our activities was spreading
awareness about various diseases caused by poor cleanliness. This awareness campaign aimed to
educate community members about the direct link between unclean environments and the
transmission of diseases. We highlighted the importance of cleanliness and hygiene practices in
preventing illness and improving overall community health.

The diseases covered in our awareness campaign included:

1. Diarrheal Diseases [1]: We emphasized the importance of clean water sources, proper
sanitation, and hand hygiene in preventing diseases such as cholera, rotavirus, and norovirus.
We educated individuals about the risks of consuming contaminated food or water and the
significance of waste management in reducing the spread of diarrheal diseases.

2. Vector-Borne Diseases [2]: Through our awareness efforts, we raised consciousness about
diseases transmitted by vectors, such as mosquitoes and flies. We focused on illnesses such as
malaria, dengue fever, Zika virus, and chikungunya. By highlighting the role of unclean
environments in providing breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and flies, we
underscored the importance of proper waste disposal, stagnant water elimination, and
maintaining clean surroundings.

3. Respiratory Infections [3]: Our campaign emphasized the impact of unclean living conditions
on respiratory health. We educated community members about the connection between poor
cleanliness, inadequate ventilation, dust accumulation, and respiratory infections such as
influenza, pneumonia, and tuberculosis. By promoting cleanliness practices and advocating
for proper ventilation, we aimed to reduce the risk of respiratory illnesses.

5
4. Skin Infections [4]: To address skin-related diseases, we emphasized the importance of
personal hygiene and cleanliness. We raised awareness about the risks of inadequate hygiene,
improper wound care, and unclean living environments, which can lead to skin infections
such as scabies, impetigo, and fungal infections. By promoting good personal hygiene
practices, we aimed to reduce the incidence of these infections.

5. Gastrointestinal Infections [5]: Our awareness campaign focused on the significance of hand
hygiene, safe food handling, and clean water sources in preventing gastrointestinal infections.
We educated individuals about diseases such as typhoid fever, hepatitis A, and gastroenteritis,
which can be caused by consuming contaminated food or water. By emphasizing the
importance of cleanliness in food preparation, proper handwashing, and access to clean water,
we aimed to reduce the incidence of gastrointestinal infections.

Overall, the second week of our social internship was a significant step in our journey towards
promoting cleanliness and hygiene. Through the awareness campaign and survey, we gained valuable
insights, identified areas for improvement, and laid the foundation for future interventions. We remain
committed to making a positive difference in the community and look forward to the upcoming weeks
of our internship.

Week 3: Cleaning drive

During our third week of internship, we initiated a cleaning drive in local areas with a poor
state of garbage disposal. With coordinated team efforts, this was possible. This initiative
aimed to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution and encourage
responsible waste management practices.

The primary objectives of this week were:

 Setting an example of taking initiative for change

 Providing help towards the community

 Creating a cleaner and greener environment to live in.

First phase of this week was spent on planning the drive, as in:

1. Choosing locations for the cleaning: We had to pick a location with enough garbage
where this drive would make an impact.

2. Collecting cleaning equipment like brooms, gloves, bags etc. Equal monetary
contributions were made by all members for collection of materials.

3. Division of the team based on cleaning jobs (picking up litter, sweeping, etc.)

The second phase of the week was the cleaning drive itself. All the team members gathered
during the designated time at the location. The task began with picking up large solid plastic

8
wastes that were easily visible for disposal. After which smaller plastic wastes were swept
using brooms. The teams worked in cycles for maximum efficiency.

We even kept track of the types of garbage collected, which consisted majorly of:

 plastic wastes like packaging, wrappers, containers etc.

 and e-waste as well such as batteries, bulbs, computer appliances etc.

But the point to be noted here was, improving plastic disposal would reduce most of the
garbage problems in most areas.

Alongside the cleaning activities, the students conducted an awareness campaign, engaging in
conversations with passers-by, emphasizing the importance of responsible waste
management.

The positive outcomes of this cleaning drive were:

1. A lot of plastic waste was managed by us, improving the scenic value of the area and
reducing spread of diseases as such.

2. The awareness campaign educated the locals about the adverse effects of plastic waste
and the importance of responsible waste management practices.

3. Students acquired practical skills in organizing events, teamwork, and effective

communication. They also gained a deeper understanding of environmental
challenges and possible solutions.

Week 4: Submission of Report

During the fourth week of our social internship, we focused on analysing and compiling the data
collected from the cleanliness and hygiene survey conducted earlier. Our primary objective was to

10
prepare a comprehensive survey report that highlights the key findings, trends, and recommendations
for improving cleanliness practices within the community.

Data Analysis:

We dedicated substantial time to analysing the survey data to extract meaningful insights. We utilized
various statistical tools and techniques to identify patterns, trends, and correlations within the data.
This analysis allowed us to gain a deeper understanding of the current state of cleanliness practices
and identify areas of improvement.

Key Findings:

Based on the data analysis, we discovered several significant findings from the survey, including:

1. Knowledge Gap:
A considerable portion of respondents displayed a lack of awareness regarding recycling practices and
specific diseases linked to poor cleanliness. This highlights the need for targeted educational
initiatives to bridge this knowledge gap and enhance understanding among community members.

2. Inconsistent Handwashing:
While a significant number of respondents reported frequent handwashing, many admitted to
inconsistent handwashing or not following proper hand hygiene techniques. This indicates the
importance of reinforcing the importance of consistent handwashing practices and promoting proper
techniques to reduce the risk of diseases transmitted through unclean hands.

3. Sanitation Facility Maintenance:

Although most respondents had access to sanitation facilities, a notable portion reported issues with
cleanliness and maintenance. This emphasizes the need for regular maintenance and improved
cleanliness standards in public sanitation facilities to ensure hygienic conditions.

11
4. Positive Waste Management Practices:
The survey revealed that a majority of respondents demonstrated a good understanding of waste
management practices. However, there is room for improvement in terms of recycling awareness and
participation. Efforts should be made to promote recycling initiatives and encourage the adoption of
sustainable waste management practices.

Recommendations:

Based on the survey findings, we have formulated the following recommendations to enhance
cleanliness practices within the community:

1. Awareness and Education Campaigns [6]:

Organize targeted awareness campaigns and educational sessions to address the knowledge gap
regarding recycling practices and specific diseases associated with poor cleanliness. These initiatives
should focus on disseminating information, promoting behaviour change, and providing practical tips
for maintaining cleanliness and hygiene.

2. Handwashing Promotion [7]:

Implement handwashing promotion programs to emphasize the importance of consistent handwashing
with soap or sanitizer. These programs should include demonstrations of proper handwashing
techniques, the distribution of educational materials, and the installation of handwashing stations in
key community areas.

3. Sanitation Facility Maintenance [8]:

Collaborate with local authorities and relevant stakeholders to improve the cleanliness and
maintenance of public sanitation facilities. This can involve regular inspections, repairs, and
awareness campaigns to ensure that these facilities are clean, well-maintained, and easily accessible to
the community.

4. Recycling Initiatives [9]:

Launch recycling campaigns and initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and
waste segregation. This can include organizing recycling drives, providing recycling bins in the
community, and partnering with recycling facilities to facilitate proper waste disposal and recycling.

12
5. Community Engagement [10]:
Continuously engage with community members through interactive sessions, workshops, and
community events. Encourage active participation and involve community members in decision-
making processes related to cleanliness and hygiene initiatives. This fosters a sense of ownership and
empowers individuals to take responsibility for maintaining a clean environment.

Conclusion

13
The submission of the survey report marks an important milestone in our social internship. The report
encapsulates the findings, trends, and recommendations derived from the survey data, providing a
solid foundation for future initiatives and interventions.

By implementing the recommendations outlined in the survey report, we aim to create a positive and
lasting impact on cleanliness practices within the community. Through awareness campaigns,
educational programs, and collaborative efforts, we strive to promote a culture of cleanliness and
hygiene, ultimately leading to improved community health and well-being.
