This exam contains 2 pages (including this cover page) and 2 problems. Check to see if any
pages are missing. Enter all requested information on the top of this page, and put your
initials on the top of every page, in case the pages become separated.

You may use your books, notes, or any calculator on this exam.

You are required to show your work on each problem on this exam. The following rules apply:

• If you use a “fundamental theorem” you

must indicate this and explain why the the-

1. (30 points) The outside diameter of a pul-

ley is 10.0 · x cm and the cross section of
its rim is as shown. An architect needs to
know its total weight W . Knowing that the
pulley is made of steel and that the density
of steel is ρsteel = 7 + z/10 + y/100 g/cm3 ,
determine the weight W of the rim.

DATA (all values are expressed in mm):

yT
B1 = 50 (x + y + z)/3; L = B1 /5; B2 = B1 − 2 · L; H2 = 0.5 · B1 − L; Hmax = 4 · B1

2. (70 points) An engineer is requested to determine de moment of inertia of the thin plate
AC
about an axis perpendicular to the page and passing through the pin at O. The plate
has a hole in its centre. Its thickness is c, and the material has a density of ρ (see Fig. 1).
She deduced that it is needed to calculate the polar moment of inertia of the plate about
point O. Then, apply your result to the following data:
UF
L = [1 + x/10 + y/100] m, c = [10.0 · (x + y + z)/3] mm, r = [3 · c] mm,
3
ρ = [z/100] g/cm .
