 English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
English as a foreign language, otherwise known as EFL, is the study of English
by non-native speakers who live in a country where English is not the official
language (or, the official second language).
Because English is the world’s “Lingua Franca” (a common language that’s used
to bridge together speakers of other languages), non-native speakers are
learning English as a foreign language in order to take advantage of the benefits
which come with it.
Some estimates put the number of people speaking English in the world at more
than 1 billion, which means that more people speak English as a second
language than there are native English speakers in the world.
Emerging markets all over the world now teach English as a second language,
both to school-age children and adults. From Brazil to China to India to France,
the world is full of non-native-English speakers, thanks to market and product
globalization and the need to communicate with major businesses and industries
in the U.S., Great Britain, and Canada.
Further, TEFL educators may also be found in parts of the world where English
is widely used, such as Australia. Their work in English-speaking countries often
involves specific teaching colloquialisms and idioms.

English as a Medium of Instruction

The way that English is taught in a given country plays a key role in determining
what variety of English is spoken there. For example, if the majority of students
have spoken English since birth and you teach exclusively in English, you know
that you are dealing with an ENL country. Ultimately, writer Christopher
Fernandez argues, English is only considered a medium of instruction in
education and government in ESL or ENL contexts, not EFL.
"Although ESL (English as Second Language) and EFL (English as Foreign
Language) are often used interchangeably, there are unique differences
between the two. ... ESL countries are nations where the medium of instruction
in education and government is in English, although English may not be the native
language.

ESL and EFL Teaching

So how do the methods of teaching English as a second language and as a
foreign language differ? English as a second language is learned in environments
where English is already regularly spoken; English as a foreign language is
learned in environments where English is not spoken. Lee Gunderson et al.
explain: "ESL and EFL instructional approaches differ in significant ways. ESL is
based on the premise that English is the language of the community and the
school and that students have access to English models.
EFL is usually learned in environments where the language of the community and
the school is not English. EFL teachers have the difficult task of finding access to
and providing English models for their students. ... As the number of ESL students
has increased in schools across North America, more classrooms and schools
have become more like EFL than ESL environments," (Gunderson et al. 2009).

How EFL Relates to the Expanding Circle Theory

English as a Foreign Language loosely corresponds with the Expanding Circle
theory of language described by linguist Braj Kachru in "Standards, Codification
and Sociolinguistic Realism: The English Language in the Outer Circle."
According to this theory, there are three concentric circles of World English that
can be used to categorize places where English is studied and spoken and map
English diffusion. These are the inner, outer, and expanding circles. Native
English speakers are in the inner circle, English-speaking countries that have
historically adopted English as a second language or lingua franca are in the
outer circle, and countries in which English is used some but is not widely spoken
are in the expanding circle.
The circles represent the different tiers of World Englishes. According to this
theory, English is a native language in the inner circle (ENL), a second language
in the outer circle (ESL), and a foreign language in the expanding circle (EFL).
As English spreads globally, more countries are added to the circles.

Exams for learners

Learners of English are often eager to get accreditation and a number of exams
are known internationally:
• IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is the world's
most popular English test for higher education and immigration. It is
managed by the British Council, Cambridge Assessment English and IDP
Education.
• CaMLA
• TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
• Cambridge Assessment English offers a suite of globally available
examinations including General English: Key English Test (KET),
Preliminary English Test (PET), First Certificate in English (FCE),
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) and Certificate of Proficiency
in English (CPE).
Inglés como Lengua Extranjera (EFL)
El inglés como lengua extranjera, también conocido como EFL, es el estudio del
inglés por hablantes no nativos que viven en un país donde el inglés no es el
idioma oficial (o el segundo idioma oficial).
Debido a que el inglés es la "Lingua Franca" del mundo (un idioma común que
se utiliza para unir a los hablantes de otros idiomas), los hablantes no nativos
están aprendiendo inglés como lengua extranjera para aprovechar los beneficios
que conlleva.
Algunas estimaciones sitúan el número de personas que hablan inglés en el
mundo en más de 1.000 millones, lo que significa que más personas hablan
inglés como segundo idioma que hablantes nativos de inglés en el mundo.
Los mercados emergentes de todo el mundo ahora enseñan inglés como
segundo idioma, tanto a niños en edad escolar como a adultos. Desde Brasil
hasta China, India y Francia, el mundo está lleno de hablantes no nativos de
inglés, gracias a la globalización del mercado y del producto y la necesidad de

Además, los educadores de TEFL también se pueden encontrar en partes del
mundo donde el inglés se usa ampliamente, como Australia. Su trabajo en países
de habla inglesa a menudo implica coloquialismos y modismos de enseñanza
específicos.

Inglés como medio de instrucción

La forma en que se enseña el inglés en un país determinado juega un papel
clave en la determinación de qué variedad de inglés se habla allí. Por ejemplo,
si la mayoría de los estudiantes han hablado inglés desde su nacimiento y usted
enseña exclusivamente en inglés, sabe que está tratando con un país ENL. En
última instancia, argumenta el escritor Christopher Fernández, el inglés solo se
considera un medio de instrucción en educación y gobierno en contextos de ESL
o ENL, no EFL.
"Aunque ESL (inglés como segundo idioma) y EFL (inglés como lengua
extranjera) a menudo se usan indistintamente, existen diferencias únicas entre
los dos. ... Los países de ESL son naciones donde el medio de instrucción en
educación y gobierno es en inglés, aunque el inglés puede no ser el idioma
nativo.
 Enseñanza de ESL y EFL
Entonces, ¿en qué se diferencian los métodos de enseñanza del inglés como
segundo idioma y como lengua extranjera? El inglés como segundo idioma se
aprende en entornos donde el inglés ya se habla regularmente; El inglés como
lengua extranjera se aprende en entornos donde no se habla inglés. Lee
Gunderson et al. explican: "Los enfoques de instrucción de ESL y EFL difieren
de manera significativa. ESL se basa en la premisa de que el inglés es el idioma
de la comunidad y la escuela y que los estudiantes tienen acceso a modelos de
inglés.
EFL generalmente se aprende en entornos donde el idioma de la comunidad y
la escuela no es el inglés. Los profesores de EFL tienen la difícil tarea de
encontrar acceso y proporcionar modelos de inglés para sus estudiantes. ... A
medida que el número de estudiantes de ESL ha aumentado en las escuelas de

Cómo se relaciona EFL con la teoría del círculo en expansión

El inglés como lengua extranjera se corresponde vagamente con la teoría del
lenguaje del círculo en expansión descrita por el lingüista Braj Kachru en

Según esta teoría, hay tres círculos concéntricos del inglés mundial que se
