Effects of Ajinomoto (Monosodium glutamate) on

Ornamental flowering plants.

Background of the Study:

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is known as an “unhealthy” ingredient in
most human foods if present in excess, but in plants, it has actually been used in
many fertilizers. Many farms today now spray their crops with MSG to enrich
growth and to ward off insects (Fassa, par. 8) It was hypothesized that adding MSG
to the soil of the mustard plants would improve the growth of the plants. Studies
show that salts are usually detrimental to the growth of plants but there has been
significant research demonstrating that MSG-rich fertilizers enhance plant growth.
In a similar experiment to this one, Singh, Rekha, Arun, and Young found that
“plants were healthy and showed no signs of toxicity” when MSG was added.
(2013, p. 3). The organic matter found in MSG improves soil quality, which aids
with water retention and provides a nutrient-rich environment for your plants.
In addition, the sulfur found in MSG acts as a disinfectant for the soil, ridding it of
disease-causing bacteria. Therefore MSG helps to keep your garden healthy and
flourishing. MSG or commonly known as Vetsin is widely used for seasoning,
Sodium in small amounts, enhances plant’s capacity to process Carbon (Plant
Metabolism). MSG is made from corn, wheat, tapioca, sugar cane, or other food
crops that have high starch proteins. Through the fermentation process, the sugar
and starch are turned into the glutamic acid. We can use VETSIN to achieve
greener leaves and finer blooms. contains glutamic acid, sodium benzoate, and
water. These three ingredients can make your ornamental plants productive. It is
excellent fertilizer for plants as its high in nitrogen and minerals. It can aid in
healthy plant development, accelerate growth, and enhance the development of
flowers and fruit It can be also used to deter insects from plants. It contains high
level of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Trace elements such as ammonium,
sulfate, calcium, magnesium, organic matter. A variety of amino acids which are
needed for plant growth.

These are all essential nutrients for healthy plant growth, with each playing
its own specific roles:

 Nitrogen helps create food for the plant through photosynthesis.

 Phosphates encourage root growth, increase the uptake of other nutrients,
and are the bloom booster.
 Potassium helps your plants grow faster and regulates the metabolic
processes required for fruit and seed development.
 Organic matter can improve soil and helps in water and nutrient retention. It
also promotes beneficial organisms in the soil, hence improving the efficient
use of fertilizer.
 The amino acids can make the crop robust and improve crop resistance.
 Sulfur helps in the soil disinfection function and improves the efficient use
of nitrogen.

Objectives:
 To find out if it is worth to use Ajinomoto (Monosodium glutamate) as an
alternative fertilizer.
 To determine the effects of Ajinomoto on ornamental plants.
 This study hopes to show an alternative source of fertilizer.
 This study can also help to reduce our expenses on fertilizer.

Materials/Equipments:
 Ajinomoto (Monosodium glutamate)
 5 liter water
 Galloon
 Gloves
 Ornamental plants (snake plants, desert rose, ect.)

Procedure:
1. For a small plants, Mix a 1 to 2 tablespoon of MSG to 5-liter water (1.32
galloon).
2. Shake well to mix.
3. Gather a different types of ornamental plants.
4. Apply once every two weeks.
5. Observe and record.
6. Check out for the improvement and find out the result.
