Pre-tasks

Start by doing the self-correcting exercises which you can find in the classroom in the
Resources section: The Writer Within: Women and self-publishing. You can find the
Resources section in the top right corner of the classroom. As you are working through the
exercises, take note of any new language you learn. You will need this to prepare the Tasks
below.

When you have finished, share one thing that you have learnt from these resources (e.g.
vocabulary, expressions or grammar) to the I have learnt something today folder in the
Forum.

Task 1

Remember that your writing must be 100% original and that you should not receive external
help when preparing your text. Your work will be run through the plagiarism detection
software used by the UOC. If your writing is found not to be 100% original, you will
automatically fail the subject.

Essay question: "The government should place restrictions on self-publishing in order


to reduce the spread of fake news and information."

Write a persuasive essay in which you defend or refute this statement. In your essay, you
will need to make use of the required language focus.

Write an essay of 200 – 250 words. Remember to write an introduction for the essay, develop
points of view in the main body and give your opinion in the conclusion.

LANGUAGE FOCUS

For this task you will need to use the following structures in the CA12 self-study resources:
modals for hedging. Your writing will also be assessed on how clearly you answer the
question and communicate your ideas in order to persuade the reader. Pay close attention to
how you express your opinion while trying to convince your audience.

REVISION FOCUS

Before you submit your essay, ask yourself these questions to check you covered all
important parts of the assignment.

● Does my writing follow the “introduction — main body — conclusion” structure?


● Is my essay within the required word limit (200 – 250 words)?
● Do I use a variety of modals for hedging in my essay?
● Do I give my opinion in the essay?
● Do I try to persuade the reader to agree with my opinion?
● Have I checked the grammar and run a spellcheck?

● After revising your essay, send it to the CA12 Essay folder in the Forum.
● You must also upload your essay in a Word document to the Continuous Assessment
Register (REC).

Task 2

Q & A (FORUM)

Read at least two of your classmates’ essays and think about them carefully as you read.
Think of a question to ask them about what you’ve read. Then, post your responses to the
Forum.

You can ask questions about the content of their essay or ask them to clarify something you
didn’t understand.

You may also wish to comment on how persuasive you found their argument. Were you
convinced by their points and how they made them, or do you still remain unconvinced?

Feel free to continue responding to your classmates in a dialogue!
