I. Helen Brown left Washington, DC when she was 26 and went abroad. She
returned to the US and got married when she was 36. By that time she had
done a lot of things. Write complete sentences using the Past Perfect.
Choose from the verbs below.

1. She hadn’t had a monkey as a pet.


2. She had flown a helicopter over a park.
3. She had broken a leg skiing in Siberia.
4. She had been a truck driver, a baby-sitter, a cook and a journalist.
5. She had met many American tourists in dangerous situations.
6. She had made friends everywhere she lived.
7. She had eaten unusual and spicy food in South Africa
8. She had seen fantastic monuments in Russia and wild parks in South
Africa.

II. Complete the text with the Past Perfect form of the verbs.

Mary had worked (work) late because she didn’t want to go to an. empty
house. It was her birthday and no one had remembered (remember). Not
one of her friends had called (call). At first, she had thought (think) about
reminding her friends, but she decided not to. If they hadn’t mentioned (not
mention) it, it was because they had forgotten (forget) it. She felt terrible,
but she didn’t want to show it.

Eventually she decided to go home. As she opened the door, all the lights
went on and she heard,”Happy Birthday, Mary!” She got so happy. She
hadn’t expected (not expect) this. Her best friend, Louise, had prepared
(prepare) a surprise party for her. They hadn’t forgotten (not forget) her
after all!

III. Complete the sentences with the Past Simple or Past Perfect form of the
verb.
1. Everyone had left (leave) by the time I arrived (arrive).
2. John had finished (finish) most of his homework when he realized it
was the wrong assignment.
3. I informed (inform) the teacher I had done (do) the homework.
4. Before I went (go) to France I hadn’t spoken (not speak) any French.
5. Bill had asked (ask) his father many times before he said (say) he
could go on the trip.
6. I had eaten (eat) most of the cake when I realized (realize) there
were more people who hadn’t eaten yet.
7. Sue and Joe had lived (live) in Boston for 3 years when Joe was
transferred to Baltimore.
8. When Mr. Jones arrived (arrive), Mr. Smith had already left (already
leave).
9. When his father died (die), he hadn’t seen (not see) him for over a year.
10. They had worked (work) in the same factory for over two years when
they finally met (meet).

IV. Combine the two sentences below using the Past Perfect in one of the
clauses.
1. The waiter showed them to their table. They asked to see the menu.
When the waiter had showed them to their table, they asked to see the
menu.

2. They arrived home. The guests left to the airport.


Before they arrived home, the guests had left to the airport.

3. Simon ate his dinner. He went to bed.


After Simon had eaten his dinner, he went to bed.

4. I checked my answering machine when I got home. No calls,


When I checked my answering machine, there had been no calls.

5. The students became very quiet. They heard Mary had an accident.
When the students heard Mary had had an accident, they became very
quiet.
