A.

Terms of Spelling Bee’s Participants

a. Registration opens from 14th of April 2023


b. Participants are senior high school students from across Palembang who signed up
and have re-registered
c. Individual Contestants
d. There are no limitations to having each school send participants
e. The participants wear their respective school uniform while competing

B. Rules Of Competition

1. This competition will take place offline at Politeknik Pariwisata Palembang


2. Participants must spell using English language
3. Participants are required to spell the English Word (for ex : z read /zi:/)
4. Participants who get a round will be called three times, if the participant is not
introduced after being called three times, then the participant is deemed
disqualified
5. Spelling Bee at this I-O2MEC event using American English dan British English
Pronunciation
6. The dictionary for the Spelling Bee I-O2MEC competition is the Oxford Advanced
Learner’s Dictionary
7. Participants are not permitted to bring a dictionary or spelling preparation devices
into the competition hall.
8. The I-O2MEC competition consists of 4 (four) rounds : Preliminary round 1 and
Preliminary round 2, Semifinal round and Final round
9. Participants can begin to spell after the word has to be spelled twice by the
pronouncer
10. Each participant is allowed to ask the judges for a maximum of 3 helpers for each
hard-to-spell word, assistance such as :
● Repetition

● Signification of the word (definition)

● Use the words in phrases (In Sentences)


11. To request assistance/direction, participants can simply say : Definition, please./
Synonym, please./ etc.
12. Each given index will reduce the participant’s points, the explanation for that
reduction of points is in the scoring system of each round.
13. Spelling takes 1 (one) minute for each word
14. Participants are required to lock out the word they are spelling correctly by
mentioning that word, for example, the farmer said :
F-A-R-M-E-R (Locked with pronouncing : FARMER)
15. If Participants have not locked the spelled word, they have the right to change the
spelling for the length of the spelling.
16. The words that the participants locked out cannot be changed
17. Participants who spell beyond spelling time do not have marks
18. Participants who spell incorrectly during spelling, will get a 2 (two) points off
19. Questions that the participants can’t answer won’t be asked again to the next
participant
20. The audience and the other participants are prohibited from giving clues to
participants, as participants will be disqualified if they obtain clues from the public
or other parties

C. Technical Spelling Bee Competition

1. The competition consist of 4 rounds : Preliminary 1, Preliminary 2, Semifinal, and


Final Round
2. Preliminary 1 conditions are the following :
a. Participants will receive multiple words in their allotted time
b. The type of word to be used during this round is EASY
c. In this round participants are not allowed to use guidelines
d. This round has no clue
e. If the participants not clear/doesn’t know the vocabulary spoken by the
pronouncer then the participant must say the word “PASS” to move on the next
question, the questions will be repeated if there still time left
f. The judge will ring the bell if the question posed by the pronouncer is deemed
misspelled
g. The Participant may request the pronouncer to repeat the given question
h. Top participants at the specified amount will continue the competition through
to preliminary round 2
3. Preliminary 2 has the following conditions :
a. Participants will be give several words within the specified time
b. The type of word that will be used in this round is MEDIUM
c. In this round participants aren’t allowed to use the help of any instructions
d. There is no clue in this round
e. If the participant is not clear/doesn’t know the vocabulary spoken by the
pronouncer then the participant must say the word “PASS” to move on to the
next question, the question will be repeated if there’s still have time left
f. The judges will press the bell if the question given by the pronouncer is
considered misspelled
g. Participants may ask the pronouncer to repeat the given question
h. The best participants in the specified amount will continue the competition to
the Semifinal round
4. Participants who qualify for the Semifinal round are eligible to :
a. Participants will receive a question in word form for spelling
b. In this round participants are allowed to ask for clues (instructions), either in the
form of definitions or class words
c. Participants may ask the pronouncer to repeat the questions given 2 (two) times
d. If it exceeds the specified time, then the participants considered to have failed
to spell
e. The best participants for the specified amount will be to continue the competition
through to the final round
5. The Final Round is as follows :
a. This round will implement a one-on-one system
b. Each participant is required to spell the word given by the pronouncer, if the
word fails to be spelled, then the word will be thrown at the opponent (the
opponent will spell the word that the previous participant failed to spell)
c. Participants who manage to spell two more words than their opponents will be
considered qualified (These two words can be purely from their question words
or one of them is from throwing to answer the opponent’s questions)
6. The one-on-one system will run multiple times until the top two finish first and
second
7. The judges decisions are absolute and inviolable
