Introductory Message
For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Computer Systems Servicing NCII G11 module on

Installing VMware.

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed
by its Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou
Concepcion A. Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig
through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized
the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential
Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and

independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5
Cs, namely: Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and
Character while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box
in the body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to Computer Systems Servicing NCII Module on Installing

VMware. The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It
is often used to depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may
learn, create and accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource
signifies that you as a learner is capable and empowered to successfully
achieve the relevant competencies and skills at your own pace and time. Your
academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material
while being an active learner.

 You had learned in our last module that computers normally have a single
operating system installed to them.
 You had also learned that we can dual-boot multiple operating system on
your computers.
 You had learned that the process of creating a dual-boot system starts with
installing the old operating system first before installing the newer operating
system. For example, if you want to dual-boot Windows 7 and 10, install
Windows 7 and then install Windows 10 after.

INTRODUCTION TO VIRTUAL MACHINES

What is a virtual machine?

A virtual machine is a virtual representation, or emulation of a physical
computer. It is a virtual environment that functions as a virtual computer system
with its own CPU, memory, network interface and storage, created on a physical
hardware system.
A software called hypervisor separates the machine’s resources from the
hardware and provisions them appropriately so they can be used by the virtual
machine.
A virtual machine is a computer file, typically called an image, that behaves
like an actual computer. In other words, creating a computer within a computer.

What are virtual machine used for?

Virtual machines have historically been used for server virtualization, which
enables IT teams to consolidate their computing resources and improve efficiency.
Additionally, virtual machines can perform specific tasks considered too risky to
carry out in a host environment, such as accessing virus-infected data, running
incompatible software or testing operating systems.
Virtualization has revolutionized computing and Information technology. It
becomes a powerful tool for business and security concerns when it comes to the
digital realm. Also, it becomes a very powerful tool for Computer Systems
Servicing.
Before we start installing VMware workstation, here are the list of the best
virtual machine software as listed by techradar.com for your reference:
1. VMware Workstation
2. VirtualBox
3. Parallels Desktop
4. QEMU
5. Citrix Hypervisor
6. Xen Project
7. Microsoft Hyper-V
Advantages of virtual machines
Virtual machines are easy to manage and maintain, and they offer several
advantages over physical machines:
 Virtual Machines can run multiple operating system environments on
a single physical computer, saving physical space, time and
management costs.
 Virtual Machines support legacy applications, reducing the cost of
migrating to a new operating system. For example, a Linux virtual
machine running a distribution of Linux such as the guest operating
system can exist in a host server that is running a non-Linux
operating system, such as Windows.
 Virtual machines can also provide integrated disaster recovery and
application provisioning options.

Disadvantages of virtual machines

While virtual machines have several advantages over physical machines,
there are also some potential disadvantages:
 Running multiple virtual machines on one physical machine can
result in unstable performance if infrastructure requirements are not
met.
 Virtual machines are less efficient and run slower than a full physical
computer. Most enterprises use a combination of physical and virtual
infrastructure to balance the corresponding advantages and
disadvantages.

What is VMware Workstation Pro?

VMware Workstation Pro lets users run multiple operating systems as
virtual machines (VMs) on a single Linux or Windows PC.
How does VMware Workstation Pro work?
VMware Workstation Pro works by creating fully isolated, secure virtual
machines that encapsulate an operating system and its applications.
The VMware virtualization layer maps the physical hardware resources, so
each virtual machine has its own CPU, memory, disks, and I/O devices, and is the
full equivalent of a standard x86 machine. VMware Workstation Pro installs onto
the host operating system and provides broad hardware support by inheriting
device support from the host.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

VMware Workstation Pro runs on standard x86-based hardware with 64-bit

intel and AMD processors and on 64-bit Windows or Linux host operating systems.
VMware recommends the following:
 64-bit x86 Intel or AMD Processor from 2011 or later
 1.3GHz or faster core speed
 2GB RAM minimum/4GB RAM recommended
 1.2 GB of available disk space for the application
 Additional hard disk space required for each virtual machine
NOTE: Vmware Workstation 15 Pro requires a 64-bit host operating system.

Supported Guest Operating Systems

VMware Workstation Pro supports hundreds of 32-bit and 64-bit guest
operating systems from Microsoft DOS through Windows 10, Windows NT Server
through Windows Server 2016, Ubuntu 17.04 and various flavors of Linux. Here
is a list of popular supported guest operating systems.

> Windows 8 > RedHat > Debian
> Windows 7 > SUSE > Fedora
> Windows XP > openSUSE > Mint
