Projectile Motion 1/29-07-2021 3

OBJECTIVES

1. To determine the range horizontal displacement as a function of the angle of projection.

2. To determine the maximum height of projection as a function of the angle of projection.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this laboratory session, students should be able to:

1. Distinguish between the experimental and theoretical values of vertical and horizontal
distance of projectile motion.
2. Use appropriate formulae to calculate the maximum height and horizontal distance.

THEORY

In motion of a projectile as shown in the Figure 1 below, the components of the

acceleration are:

ax  x  0 (1)


ay  y  g (2)

If the resistance of the air is neglected, denoting by xo and yo the coordinates of a

gun, and by (vx)o and (vy)o the components of the initial velocity vo of the projectile of a
bullet), we integrate twice in t and obtain

vx  x  (vx ) o (3)
v y  y  (v y ) 0  gt (4)
x  xo  (vx )o t (5)

𝑦= 𝑦 + 𝑣 𝑡− 𝑔𝑡 (6)

If the projectile is fired in the xy plane from the origin O, we have xo= yo = 0 and,
and the equations of motion reduce to:
v x  (v x ) o (7)
v y  (v y ) o  gt (8)
x  (v x ) o t (9)
1 2
y  (v y ) o t  gt (10)
