Analysis (based on Johnny Saldana's Book 'The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers')

The analysis is based on the hybrid method. It used both deductive and Inductive methods of data
analysis. The codes were developed both deductively and inductively. The deductive codes were created
based on the research and interview questions. Categories were created based on the codes.

For inductive content analysis, no predetermined theory or scheme was used. It derived mainly from the
researcher's reading and analysis of the interviewee's texts only. In the codes and categories creation,
no automated software was used.

The following steps were followed for deductive codes and categories development: Based on 'how,
who, and when' from question no. 2,3, and 4, respectively, the 'awareness' about the ISMP at IIT
Bombay category was created. The research question was the basis for the sense of community and
belongingness category. It was embedded in question no. 8. The 'academic' category was embedded in
question no. 7.

For the inductive analysis, the following steps were followed: the researcher read the transcribed
interviews several times to become familiar with the text data. The researcher developed in vivo code
from interview texts. The codes were grouped in terms of their relation to the research question. Based
on the closeness of codes in their meaning, categories' liberty' and 'a sense of Security' developed.

The researcher analyzed and judged the text data from several perspectives to well cover the data.

Liberty or A free Space

The mentees feel free on campus. They think the campus is much more liberal than their bona fide
places. They can plan their day according to their choice because parents or other-one are not on
campus to surveillance and dictate to them, which gives them freedom. IIT Bombay campus is almost a
neutral place. The IIT B campus is a place where they feel very less judged or assessed. The number of
the Class is less. The class schedule is somewhat flexible. No compulsion of uniform is another cause of
their liberty.

The major difference lies in sudden increased freedom and distance from parents and family (A, female,

A sense of Community and Belongingness

A sense of community and belonging is a deep connection with people, a group, or even places. It is one
of the fundamental human needs. People feel a different level of sense of community and
belongingness. Some humans adopt social environments quickly, while others take time for it.
Socioeconomic well-being has an impact on this adoption. A sense of community and belonging is both
facilitated and hindered by humans. The connection among humans is buried deep inside biology of
humans. Relationships among humans and the nature of surrounding social groups affect humans'
physical safety and mental well-being. Despite this importance, many people or students struggle to feel
a sense of belonging.

Interaction among humans is a primary need to initiate a feeling of community. The interaction happens
in the classroom, sports ground, or at an event and is most common for students in the hostels. Hostel
students belong to different places, identities, cultures, individual characters, socioeconomic groups,
and perceptions. The culture in hostels at IIT Bombay is dynamic and emergent.

The admission process at IIT is a competitive entrance exam. Top rankers of the exam get admission to
IIT. India has a reservation policy in admission due to social reasons. Caste and Class affect Indian society
deeply. Some students from backward castes and classes find transitioning to the campus difficult
because of these socioeconomic and other cultural reasons. The students who do not have engineering
studies relative or high education level parents feel more of a need for a mentor for guidance. The
quality of the mentor is also crucial for the mentorship program. The mentor's nature, responsibility,
and commitment can alter the program's objective.

Extracurricular activities like sports, games, events, and festivals also facilitate belongingness. IIT B has a
diverse and dynamic culture for extracurricular activities.
Our institute organizes different types of events. Here everyone can find something of interest (C,

The inductive analysis of the text highlights the importance of treat/party. Students want to share
pictures of parties, campus tours, and stories of interactions with their mentors. They are very excited
about these events. Students found these events very engaging and interactive. They are effective
means to induce a sense of belonging.
