Max Marks: 50 Assignment # 1

1. a. A population consists of 2, 2, 4, 4, 6, 8 and 10. i. Calculate the sample means for all possible random
samples of size 𝑛 = 2, that can be drawn from this population, without replacement. ii. Form the sampling
𝜎 𝑁−𝑛
distribution of sample means. iii. Verify: 𝜇𝑥̅ = 𝜇 and 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑥̅ ) = 𝑛 𝑁−1
b. Given the six-element population 0, 3, 6, 12, 15, and 18. How many samples of size n=3 can be drawn,
without replacement from this population? Compute the sampling distribution of the mean for samples of
size 3. Compute the mean and standard deviation of this distribution. Also state the relationship between
population mean & standard deviation and sample mean & standard deviation. Verify the relationship.

2. a. Draw all possible samples of size n =3 with replacement from the population 3, 6, 9 and 12. Form a
sampling distribution of the sample means. Hence state and verify the relation between i. mean of the
sampling distribution of the mean and population mean; ii .variance of the sampling distribution of the
mean and the population variance.
b. A population of 𝑁 = 5 has the following values: 4, 5, 7, 9, 10. i. Find the population moan and variance.
iii. Select all possible samples of size 𝑛 = 3 without replacement and calculate sampling distribution of
𝜎 𝑁−𝑛
the sample mean. iv. Verify: 𝜇𝑥̅ = 𝜇 and 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑥̅ ) =
𝑛 𝑁−1

3. Given the following population distribution:

𝑋 1 2 3 4
𝑓(𝑋) 1⁄7 3⁄7 2⁄7 1⁄7
Find the sampling distribution of the mean if a sample of three numbers is taken without replacement.
How does the variance of the sampling distribution compare with the population variance.

4. a. A person has the following currencies notes with symbols: $, $, £, €, $, £. i. Draw all possible samples
of size 2 WR, from the population. ii. Form the sampling distribution of sample proportion of $. iii. Verify
𝑝𝑞
that 𝜇𝑝̂ = 𝑝 and 𝑉𝑎𝑟(𝑝̂ ) =
𝑛
b. A population consists of 𝑁 = 6 numbers 0, 3, 4, 6, 9 and 15. Draw all possible samples of size 𝑛 = 3
WOR, from the population and find the sample proportion of even numbers in the samples. Construct the
𝑝𝑞 𝑁−𝑛
samplng distribution of sample proportions and verify that 𝜇𝑝̂ = 𝑝 and 𝑆𝐸 (𝑝̂ ) = √
𝑛 𝑁−1

5. Let the variable 𝐶represent the means of random samples of size 2 without replacement, drawn from the
finite population 5, 7, 9. Similarly, let 𝑋̅2 represent the means of random sample of size 2, without
replacement from another finite population 4, 6, 8. Assuming that the 36 possible differences 𝑋̅1 − 𝑋̅2 are
equally likely to occur, construct the sampling distribution of 𝑋̅1 − 𝑋̅2 and verify that:
𝜎12 𝑁1 −𝑛1 𝜎22 𝑁2 −𝑛2
i. 𝜇𝑥̅1−𝑥̅2 = 𝜇1 − 𝜇2 , ii. 𝜎𝑥̅1−𝑥̅2 = √ +
𝑛1 𝑁1 −1 𝑛2 𝑁2 −1
