2 EXAM TASK Read the following text. Three sentences have been removed from the text. Choose from the
sentences (A-E) the one which fits each gap (1-3) to obtain a logical and coherent text. There are two extra
sentences that you do not need to use.
It was a beautiful day for a sightseeing walk. It was pleasantly warm with a light breeze from the sea. ‘What a good idea
to arrive a few days before the conference’, I thought. When I had received the invitation to attend a cardiological
convention in Barcelona, I couldn’t wait to go. I had visited the city only once before, many years ago. (1) __ Now I had
a chance to see much more of the city.
I was slowly walking along the spectacular La Rambla towards the port. Although it was only 11 o’clock, the promenade
was already crowded. I had left the hotel quite early in the morning. I was getting tired and I needed a short rest. (2) __
When the waiter appeared, I ordered a cup of coffee. While I was waiting, I took my phone out of my bag and put it on
the table meaning to call my friend, who was also coming to the convention the following day. A group of young boys
came over to my table. They were carrying lots of flyers and leaflets, which they spread all over my table. (3) __ My
Spanish was just good enough to say ‘No, thanks’. Looking disappointed, they collected their things and left. It took me
quite a while to realise my phone had disappeared with them.
