CHAPTER III
AIRPORT

A. Juanda Airport
Opened in 1964 as a naval air base of Indonesia. It replaces the previous airport in
Morokrembangan, near Tanjung Perak harbor. It was originally used as home base for Indonesian
Navy's fleet of Ilyushin Il-28 and Fairey Gannet. In its development it was also used for civil aviation.
And PT Angkasa Pura I handled the management and operation since January 1985. On December
24, 1990 Juanda Airport was gained international airport status after the opening of the international
terminal. Previously, since December 1987, the airport has served flights to Singapore, Hong Kong,
Taipei and Manila.

Juanda International Airport (JIA) (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Internasional Juanda) (IATA:
SUB, ICAO: WARR), is an international airport located in Sedati, Sidoarjo and one of the major
airports of Indonesia. This airport is located approximately 12 kilometers (8 miles) from Surabaya
and serves the Gerbangkertosusila, the metropolitan area of Surabaya plus extended urban area.
Juanda International Airport is operated by PT Angkasa Pura I. The airport takes its name after
Djuanda Kartawidjaja, the last Prime Minister of Indonesia who had suggested development of this
airport. Juanda International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Indonesia, based on the aircraft
movements and passenger movements. In 2010, the airport handled 11 million passengers, although
the capacity was 6 million passengers and the Air Traffic Controller radar system is only able to track
21 aircraft per hour, but at peak hour handled 40 to 45 aircraft landing and taking off.In 2013, the
airport serves about 400 aircraft per day.

Currently, Juanda International Airport is the hub of Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Indonesia
AirAsia, Lion Air, and Sriwijaya Air along with Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Juanda
International Airport will become one of the main airports in Indonesia for ASEAN Open skies.
In 2014, Juanda International Airport becomes the world's 10th best in Airport Service Quality by
Airport Council International among 79 airports with passengers capacity between 5-15 million a
year. And in Q1 2015 this airport increased becomes the world's 7th Airport by ACI.

B. Chang ie Airport
Singapore Changi Airport ,or simply Changi Airport, is the primary civilian airport for
Singapore, and one of the largest transportation hubs in Southeast Asia. It is currently rated the
World's Best Airport for the fifth consecutive year and is one of the world's busiest airports by

8
international passenger and cargo traffic. The airport is located in Changi, at the eastern end of
Singapore, approximately 17.2 kilometres (10.7 mi) northeast] from Marina Bay (Singapore's
Downtown Core), on a 13-square-kilometre (5.0 sq mi) site. It is operated by Changi Airport Group
and it is the home base of Singapore Airlines, Singapore Airlines Cargo, SilkAir, Scoot, Jetstar Asia
Airways and BOC Aviation.

Changi Airport serves more than 100 airlines flying to some 380 cities in about 90 countries
and territories worldwide. Each week, about 7,000 flights land or depart from Changi, or about one
every 90 seconds, with 58.7 million passengers passing through the airport in 2016. For the 2016 full-
year figures published by the airport, the airport handled 58,698,039 passengers (a 5.9% increase over
the previous year), the most in its 35-year history. This made it the sixth busiest airport by
international passenger traffic in the world and the second busiest in Asia. In December 2016, Changi
Airport registered a total of 5.68 million passenger movements, the highest ever traffic the airport has
achieved in a month since it opened in 1981. Its daily record was also broken on the Saturday before
Christmas (23 December 2016), with more than 202,359 passengers passing through during the day. In
addition to being an important passenger hub, the airport is one of the busiest cargo airports in the
world, handling 1.97 million tonnes of cargo in 2016. The total number of commercial aircraft
movements increased by 4.1% from the previous year to 360,490 in 2016. In April 2017, the airport
handled more than a billion passengers since it opened on 1 July 1981. The airport has won over 533
awards since 1981, including 26 "Best Airport" awards in just 2016 alone. Changi Airport's efforts to
mitigate the effects of ageing infrastructure include continual physical upgrades to its existing
terminals and building new facilities to maintain its reputation for setting standards in airport service
quality.

As all passenger traffic out of the airport is international in nature, the three major terminals in
operation are equipped with immigration-processing facilities for international travel. After recovering
from a drop in passenger traffic as a result of the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003, the airport saw rapid growth in traffic, which hit the
30-million mark for the first time a year later in 2004. In March 2008 and prior to the full effect of the
financial crisis of 2007–2010 on the global economy, the airport predicted that it will handle
50 million passengers by 2012, with increases due to the opening of casinos in Singapore, together
with the phased liberalisation of the Asean aviation sector. As predicted, the airport surpassed the 50-
million mark for the first time in history in 2012.

C. Kuala Lumpur Airport
The ground breaking ceremony for Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) took place on
1 June 1993[citation needed] when the government under Mahathir Mohamad decided that the
existing Kuala Lumpur airport, then known as Subang International Airport (now Sultan Abdul Aziz
Shah Airport) could not handle future demand. The construction of the airport was done mainly by a
few state owned construction companies as well as Ekovest Berhad – helmed by Tan Sri Datuk Lim
Kang Hoo. It was created as part of the Multimedia Super Corridor, a grand development plan for
Malaysia. The chief architect who designed the new airport terminal was the Japanese architect Kisho
Kurokawa.Upon KLIA's completion, Subang Airport's Terminal 1 building was demolished.
Malaysia Airports agreed to redevelop the remaining Terminal 3 to create a specialist airport for
turboprop and charter planes surrounded by a residential area and a business park. The IATA airport
code KUL was transferred from Subang Airport, which currently handles only turboprop aircraft,
general aviation and military aircraft. Subang Airport's IATA code has since been changed to SZB.
