Diffusion
WARM-UP QUEST ION S:

1. Explain why temperature affects the rate of

diffusion.
2. Define what is diffusion.

WHAT IS DIFFUSION?
Diffusion is really important in living organisms – it's
how a lot of substances get in and out of cells.
1. Diffusion happens in both solutions and gases – that's because the particles
in these substances are free to move about randomly.
2. The simplest type is when different gases diffuse through each other. This is
what's happening when the smell of perfume diffuses through a room:
Into which cell will oxygen
diffuse the faster?
And why?
Explain your answer!
Answer:
Diagram (A).

Explanation:
Oxygen can move by the process of the diffusion. Diffusion is the process of movement of solute
particles towards the region of lower concentration from the region of higher concentration .
As shown in the diagram (A) The oxygen amount is low as compared outside the cell. The oxygen
molecules will move from outside of the cells to the inside of the cell by the process of diffusion. The large
difference in the concentration gradient between inside and outside of the cells allow the diffusion faster.
FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE RATE OF
DIFFUSION:
- Temperature
- Surface area
- Concentration gradient

Q1: A student adds a drop of ink to a glass of cold water.
a). What will the student observe to happen to the drop of ink. Explain your
answer.
b). How might the observation differ if the ink was added to a glass of warm
water.
