Let’s Gather Data

Task:
Use the statistical
instrument that you made
and gather the needed
data.
Lesson 5
Gathering
statistical data
1. Use simple statistical
instrument to gather
data.
2. Gather statistical data.
1. Interview Method
2. Questionnaire Method
3. Observation Method
4. Experimental Method
Interview
Interview Method
Method
is a person-to-person exchange of
ideas or a dialogue between the
interviewer or interviewee. It can
be personal, by means of
telephone, or through an internet
access or online interview.
Advantages: Questions may be repeated,
rephrased, modified for better
understanding. Answer may be clarified for a
more precise information and immediate
response are assured.
Disadvantages: Can be administered only to a
limited number of persons or group one at a
time. Interviewee may feel pressured
particularly in answering sensitive questions
for fear of approval.
Questionnaire Method
a set of written questions
aimed at obtaining
information. This can be
mailed or by hand carried or
administered through internet
access.
Advantages: Easy to do, more economical,
less expensive to conduct, the respondent
may feel free to express his or her views and
is less pressured; questions are standardized.

Disadvantages: Preparation takes time.

Requires a long time for all returns to come
in; subject to misinterpretation from
respondents; delicate questions cannot be
included.
Registration Method
Related information written in
record data banks,
newspapers,
magazines, world wide web,
and the like are the main
source of data.
Advantages: The data already exists and no
additional effort is needed; no need of
searching and motivating respondents to
participate; allows you to track progress.

Disadvantages: Information may be out of

date or inapplicable; the process of
evaluating documents and records can be
time-consuming; Some documents may be
not publicly available.
Observation Method
Data pertaining to behavior of
individuals or groups of individuals
during given situations are best
obtained through observation. This
method is usually used by
psychologists and behavioral
scientists.
Advantages: Does not rely on the
subject’s willingness to provide the
desired information.

Disadvantages: It can be made

possible only at the time of
occurrence of the appropriate
events.
Experimental Method

This is the method

designed for data collection
through experiment. It is
used in scientific inquiries.
Advantages: It allows control of
variables, experiments can be
replicated, and results can be
observed, measured and
quantified.
Disadvantages: Results may not
apply outside of the laboratory or
experimental setting.
Practice test #4

is the best to apply in each situation.
