LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 2.1

INTRODUCTION TO STATISTICS

Data Collection
There are several methods used in the collection of primary data. These are the following;
1. The Direct or Interview Method
A researcher obtains data by asking the respondents (interviewees) certain information about
themselves or about facts and events which they may have knowledge of. It is considered as one
of the most effective methods of collecting data. It also ensures immediate response. However,
it is time consuming and more expensive.

2. The Indirect or Questionnaire Method

Data is gathered with the use of questionnaires. A questionnaire is a list of written questions
related to the topic under study. It can be distributed to the intended respondents either through
mail or by hand carry.

3. The Registration Method

Respondents give information in compliance with certain laws and standard practices.
Examples are the registration of births, deaths, marriages, voters, licenses, motor vehicles real
states. Here, government agencies are the major collectors of data.

4. The Observation Method

It is used to gather data regarding attitudes, behavior, values, or the cultural patterns of the
subjects under investigation.

5. The Experiment Method

Researcher wishes to control the factors affecting the variable being studied. This is usually
applied to scientific studies.

____2. Indirect or Questionnaire attitudes, behavior, values, or cultural
method patterns
____3. Registration method b. used questionnaires
____4. Observation method c. usually applied to scientific studies
____5. Experiment method d. respondents give information in
compliance with certain laws
e. ensures immediate response

Activity 2.3:

Answer each problem.

1. Multiliver Company would interview “mallers” regarding their favorite brand of toothpaste,
soap or shampoo. What method of collecting data did the company use?
