A) Solve the following system of equations using Gauss elimination method:
III 1
x+y+z = 1; 3x+y-3z = 5; x-2y-5z = 10
II 1
B) Differentiate between Jacobi iteration and Gauss Siedel iteration method.
2 A) Represent Newton Raphson method and compare with False position method. II 1

B) The Vander Waals relationship for the gas is given by

Where a=1.33 atm lt2/mole2, b=0.0366 lt/gm mole and R=0.08206 lt atm/gmol K. III 1

Find the volume of the gas at 50 atm pressure and -100 °C. Use Newton’s method.

3 Two concentric cylindrical metallic shells are separated by a solid material. If the II 2
two metal surfaces are maintained at different constant temperatures, what is the
steady state temperature distribution within the separating material? Represent the
problem and give the probable solution.
4 A tank contains 100 m3 of fresh water; 2 m3 of brine, having a concentration of 10 III 2
ppm of salt, is run into the tank per minute, and the mixture, kept uniform by
mixing, runs out at the rate of 1 m3/min.What will be the exit brine concentration
when the tank contains 150 m3 of brine?
5 8540 lb/hr of an animal fat are to hydrolyzed and extracted in a spray column using IV 4
3760 lb/hr of water. When the column is operating under counter current flow
conditions, the percentage of hydrolyzed glycerin in the fat is 8.53 % by weight and
the glycerin in the fatty acid leaving the tower is 0.24 % by weight. A mass balance
gives a glycerin concentration in the sweet water of 18.8% and the total weight of
fat phase held up in the column is 12, 200 lb. The distribution ratio of glycerin
between water and fat is 10.32 and the reaction rate constant is 10.2 h-1. Calculate
the number of theoretical stages in the column.
6 A) Solve the following differential equation using method of separation of III 3
variables. II 3
B) Represent a second order linear differential equation and give the
complementary function to the equation.
7 3875 kg/h of an animal fat are to be hydrolyzed and extracted in spray column IV 5
using 1705 kg/h of water. If the column is to operate under counter-current flow
conditions, the percentage of hydrolysable glycerin in the fat is 8.53% by weight,
and the glycerin in fatty acid leaving in the tower is 0.24% by weight. Calculate the
number of theoretical stages in the column. Develop the mathematical problem, and
give the possible solution in the notation assuming any missing data.
8 Apply the central composite design to any chemical process assuming a sample III 6
data.
