1.0 Purpose

To carry out the online PD measurement of Transformer.

2.0 Scope

This procedure shall apply during the online PD measurement of transformers at the site.

3.0 Definition

3.1 D.E. – Diagnostic Engineer.

3.2 E.E. – Electrical Engineer.

4.0 Reference standard and codes

4.1 Technical Brochure 444: Guideline for unconventional partial discharge

measurement.
4.2 Refer the user manual of the equipments.
4.3 D1-102: Sensors and sensing used for non-conventional PD Detection.

5.0 Responsibilities

The Diagnostic Engineer shall be responsible for preparing the testing plan, for the
observance of all safety precautions required by the Safety Plan, for supervising the
testing activities.

He shall prepare the testing plan that will include the equipment to be tested, the tests to
be performed, the test equipment to be used, the test procedure to be applied and the
test records to be used. Based on the testing plan, in coordination with the Electrical
Engineer a testing schedule will be developed.
The Diagnostic Engineer shall organize, supervise and verify the implementation of the
testing schedule.

Any defects or variances from the approved specification and standards will be noted
during the testing and be informed to the construction department by the Inspection
Report.

Diagnostic Engineer (DE) shall be responsible for carrying out the tests and record the
test results.

6.0 Test Equipment Control

The Diagnostic Engineer shall carry out an inspection of the test equipment when the
test equipment arrives in the warehouse. Each piece of the test equipment shall have the
calibration labels intact. He shall ensure that test equipment manual is available and that
the test equipment is calibrated and calibration certificates are available. He will maintain
a record with the test equipment serial numbers, date of calibration and copies of
calibration certificates.

The Diagnostic Engineer shall ensure that test equipment that it is out of calibration is
isolated in a quarantine zone and will be sent as soon as possible to a certified
metrology laboratory for re-calibration against national standards.

The Diagnostic Engineer shall ensure that the test equipment is tested for proper
operation before starting any test. Any defective test equipment will be isolated in a
quarantine zone and sent as possible for repairs.

The following test equipment will used to perform the above tests:
1. AE 150- Portable Partial Discharge /Detection and localization system for Power
Transformer.
2. Techimp PD Check: Online PD measurement kit.

7.0 Checks and Tests

The following test will be performed and collect the data.

1. Visual check.
2. Online PD Measurement through UHF and HFCT method.
3. Acoustic method.

8.0 Testing Procedure

The following shall be guideline for testing personnel during the Online PD Measurement
of Transformer.

8.1 Visual check

 Visual Inspection of transformer.

8.2 Online PD Measurement.

 Connect the ground lead to the equipment.
 Install the High Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT) in the ground lead of
the transformer of main tank.
 Check the direction of H.F.C.T it should be towards ground.
 Establish the communication between the measuring unit (PD Equipment) and
the laptop through FOC. Make it sure that the PD CHECK is grounded.
 Create the folder and file.
 Check the system is synchronized.
 Start collection of data. Look into pattern.
 Ensure by applying the hard and software noise rejection technique and try to
obtain the maximum sensitivity.
 Fig. 8.2-1 Shows the connection diagram with the equipment for HFCT method.

8.3 Acoustic Method

 To measure Ultrasonic PD through Ultrasonic contact probe (magnetic) which

can be magnetically coupled on the transformer (Oil filled) cable box as shown
in the Fig: 8.3.1 and Fig 8.3.2

Fig: 8.3.1 Fig: 8.3.2

 When there is a PD activity going on inside the cable box the P.D will travel
through the insulated medium and it will touch the metallic part of the panel
which will be picked up by the sensor. Use headphones with ULD 40 to listen to
the amplified audible sound (If any) generated by surface discharge/PD.

8.4 UHF Method:

 If we find there is a PD activity taking place then we will verify with UHF Method
which is more sensitive then HFCT.
 UHF antenna is inserted in the transformer oil through filter/drain valve with the
help of flange. While inserting the UHF antenna it should be taken care that tip
of antenna should not touches the core/winding of transformer.
 Below fig shows the installation of acoustic sensor and UHF antenna.

 First we insert UHF antenna through the filter valve of transformer and connect
it to Acoustic sensor for synchronization.
 Acoustic sensors are connected to the laptop through Bluetooth Interface. And
using software we trigger on the different channels and receives signal.
Analyzing theses signals we confirm the PD activity and then we use different
trigger method on acoustic channels to localize the PD activity inside the
transformer tank
