4.2 Traceability
Note
In this method a measurement standard is the “Instrument under test”.
Unit Under Test is the instrument, which is being calibrated by this method statement.
These are the tools that indicate by means of a mechanical scale, dial or electronic
display, the value of torque exerted by the tool at the output drive.
These are the tools that are pre-set to a certain torque values, so that, when the tool
exerts the prescribed value of the torque at output drive, a signal is released (e.g.
audibly, visibly, perceptibly).

It is the component of uncertainty, which is caused by Type “B” errors and is evaluated
by non-statistical methods from the external factors having influence on the
measurement.
4.11 Linearity
The function, which define the relationship between applied torque (UUT) and the
observed reading of the Reference Standard.
4.12 Hysteresis
The difference in the reading of the measuring instrument observed when readings taken
at increasing torques are compared with readings taken at decreasing torques.
4.13 Repeatability
4.14 Resolution
The difference in torque units between two successive scales marks on the measuring
instruments.
The calibration should be performed only if the Torque Wrench / Torque Meter, when
inspected visually are in good working condition. This means that:
5.1.1 Drive shaft of the Torque Wrench / Torque Meter is squared and having defined
edges.
5.1.2 Ratchet of Torque Wrench / Torque Meter is functioning properly and there is no
slippage.
5.1.3 Locking device of Torque Wrench / Torque Meter is holding properly.
5.1.4 Casing of Torque Wrench / Torque Meter is not bent or broken.

5.1.5 Pointer arm of deflecting beam Torque Wrench is not bent or deteriorated.
The Calibration is carried out in controlled environment i.e. Temperature 22 °C ± 3°C and
temperature stability of ± 1 °C during calibration, Relative Humidity 40-80% rh. If the
environmental conditions are exceeding specified limits, calibration will be stopped and
measures will be initiated to control the environment within specified limits.
Model 43220 Pro-test 1500 series 2 Transducer and display with a maximum permissible
measurement uncertainty of 1% of indicated value is used as calibration reference standard
for the calibration of Torque Wrench / Torque Meter.
7.1 Review and become familiar with the entire procedure before beginning the Calibration
Process.
Note
All IUT must have a directional arrow(s) indicating the calibration direction (s), etched,
scribed or affixed in a permanent location on the barrel shaft near to but not on the
handgrip.
7.2 The calibration technician must be familiar with the following torque techniques.
7.2.1 Force should always be applied to the centre of the handle of the torque
instrument and at an angle of 9010 to the torque arm.
7.2.2 Force should be applied slowly / smoothly (in 1~4 second) and uniformly without
erratic jerking of the wrench.
7.2.3 It is preferable to pull on a wrench rather than push as the application of force
when pulling can be affected more smoothly.
7.2.4 All threads should be clean before a fastener is installed. This will allow a
smoother and more accurate torque to be realized.

Warning
Ensure all bolts and other hardware used to connect Torque Calibrator; transducer,
adopters and other common hardware are securely fastened. Failure to comply may
result in personal injury and equipment damage.
7.3 Bring the UUT into calibration area, set the UUT to lowest setting and allow it stabilize to
the ambient temperature of the calibration area for 4 hours prior to calibration.
7.4 Connect torque calibrator to appropriate power source. Set POWER switch ON and
allow 15-minute warm-up.
Note
The torque calibrator must be exercised in the direction required for calibration six times,
at least once daily, prior to calibrating UUT. This can be done with an exercise bar. If
possible exercise the torque calibrator to FS. If an exercising bar is not available the
UUT may be used to exercise the torque calibrator. While exercising the torque calibrator
with the UUT, it should not exceed the limit of UUT or torque calibrator. After exercising
the torque calibrator, when in a no load condition, press the zero button on the digital
Indicator.
8.1.1 Switch on the 43220 pro-test transducer display and allow it to equalize to the
ambient temperature for at least 15 minutes and wipe off any moisture before
use.
8.1.2 Select the FIRST PEAK mode on Pro-Test Transducer display for adjustable
value, snap action and impulse feel torque wrenches and make sure that the
measurement mode of the instrument is set to read click torque. In this mode it
will capture the first peak of the applied torque and will display it for the selected
auto reset hold time before automatically resetting.
8.1.3 Exercise the transducer in the direction of use for at least 5 times before setting it
to display Zero.
8.1.4 Select required unit of measurement, Pressing and releasing the “UNITS” button
will step on to the next available unit of measurement.
8.1.5 Prior to beginning the calibration of an adjustable value, snap action, and impulse
feel UUT, adjust the IUT torque value to the maximum range and cycle through
the breakaway torque for 5 times.

8.1.7 Attach UUT to the Torque Calibrator using proper adapters for the direction to be
tested within 10 of the horizontal axis.
Note
Don’t use Long Sockets or Extension.
8.1.8 Maintain the UUT in alignment with the axis of rotation of the torque calibrator
drive mechanism within 3 to eliminate misalignment or frictional errors. The
UUT must be able to move freely.
8.1.9 Apply load perpendicular to handle with a steady smooth action applied to the
center of the handgrip. Note where the UUT breaks, read the torque value from
the Torque calibrator and record it in the data sheet INAT/LAB/FRM-07 as
measured value.
Note
A fast and jerky motion must result in an improper torque reading. If selected
value is inadvertently passed (over torque applied), release the load than apply
load again. The test point will be approached in a smooth and continuous motion.
If the test point is approached too slowly inherent friction in the UUT may cause
an erroneous indication.
8.1.11 Ensure Torque Calibrator reads zero and repeat steps 8.1.6 through 8.1.10 for
40%, 60%, 80% and 100% of IUT range in ascending order and record the
readings in appropriate column of Data Sheet INAT/LAB/FRM-07.
8.1.12 Repeat calibration of UUT in the descending order (From 100% of UUT range to
20%) and record the readings. This will complete one cycle of calibration.
8.1.13 For the calculation of hysteresis error on each calibration point, apply the torque
in increasing order and takes the reading and then apply the torque in decreasing
order and take the reading. The difference in the reading is hysteresis error. If the
error is significant, convert it into standard uncertainty assuming a rectangular
probability and incorporate it into uncertainty budget.
8.1.15 Adjust the torque wrench if error is exceeding the limits given in Para 2. If
adjustment is made then re-calibrate the UUT as per above procedure and record
the result in “as left data” table of data sheet INAT/LAB/FRM-07.
