Moreover, the microwave filters are based on several technologies, such as planar technology which has many
advantages including great flexibility of realization and low realization costs; it’s based on the use of a dielectric
substrate in the form of plates, metallized on one or both sides. Several designs are then possible, such as microstrip,
coplanar or triplate[3]-[7]-[8].
Each type of filter presents an importance in the telecommunications field, so the Band-stop filters are very
important components for microwave transceivers: Wireless communication systems, the actual application usually
require small devices to fulfill the miniaturization requirements of mobile unit. Various form for this point have
been proposed for band-stop filters implementation [2].
This paper presents the design and simulation of an Open circuit Microstrip Band Stop Filter using two
simulators: microwave studio (CST) and Advanced design system (ADS) for compared the S-parameter results.

2. Band stop filter design

Figure 1 shows the transmission line network of a band-stop filter with open-circuited stubs, where the shunt
quarter-wavelength, open-circuited stubs are separated by unit elements (connecting lines) that are a quarter
wavelength long at the mid-stop-band frequency[9]. Filtering characteristics of the filter then entirely depends on
design of characteristic impedances Zi for the open-circuited stubs, and characteristic impedances Zi,i+1 for the unit
elements, as well as two terminating impedances ZA and ZB. Theoretically, this type of filter can be designed to have
any stop-band width. However, in practice the impedance of the open-circuited stubs becomes unreasonably high if
the stop-band width is very narrow. Therefore, this type of band-stop filter is more suitable for realization of wide-
band band-stop filters[4]- [5].

3. Simulation and Results

The filter was designed using CST (figure 2), where Roger RO4003C is chosen as a substrate with dielectric
constant εr=3.38, a substrate thickness of 0.813 mm , and a metal thickness of 35 μm, the following table illustrates
the dimensions of this filter, such that the total size is 21× 30 mm2.

The results of the simulation performed by CST (figure 4) and ADS (figure 5) simulators of a band stop filter
show a coincidence at the cutoff frequency f1= 2GHz and f2= 4.5 GHz. However, the comparison between found
results show the insertion loss (S21) is approximately 35dB and return loss (S11) is low than 0.3dB, while the
rejection band is 76%. For adaptation the results show that a better value is found under the CST simulator.

Fig. 5. The results of parameter-S of a band-stop filter under the ADS simulator.

Table 2 summarizes the comparison of the proposed filter with other reported filters [10-14].. As shown, the
proposed filter has a good insertion loss, and a low loss of efficiency among the filters cited. Furthermore, the
proposed filter has the compact size of 21 × 30 mm2. The proposed filter bandwidth is competitive; However, it is
worth to comment that the proposed filter has the minimum number of zeros.

4. Conclusions

A new design of an open-circuit stub band-stop filter based on microstrip technology has been successfully
designed. Results show that the proposed filter achieves good features, such as wide stop-band, and sharp transition
band in the stop-band region, low return loss, and good insertion loss, as well as compact size. Considering these
characteristics, the proposed filter can be used in the communication systems.
