In a study by FEBEA, over 60% of respondents claimed that cosmetics have a positive
impact on well-being, image, self-confidence and mood, with a large proportion (+40%)
also identifying benefits in terms of social life, love life, family life, professional life and
health.
POSITIVE EFFECTS:
HISTORY: Cosmetics are used to enhance your appearance. Makeup has been
around for many centuries. The first known people who used cosmetics to
enhance their beauty were the Egyptians. Makeup those days was just simple
eye coloring or some material for the body.
WHY COSMETIC IMPORTANT: It hides imperfections and tries to fit into the
standard set by society. It makes us look fresh by pressurizing the cells inside
the layers of the skin. Makeup is used when we want to look confident and
competent. It is a way to tell the world that one is not stressed or nervous but
happy and chill.
SELF ESTEEM: Positive body image, on the other hand, has been linked with
better mental health, higher self-esteem and healthier relationships. Negative
body image affects people of all ages, with 31% of teenagers and 35% of adults
feeling depressed or ashamed because of how they perceive their bodies.
BOOST UP HAPPINESS: For many people, wearing makeup calms them down,
and the simple act of putting on a bold lipstick may be the first step in doing
something that relieves their anxiety. In fact, studies have found a correlation
between short, repetitive rituals and perceived boost in happiness
HIDE IMPERFECTIONS: Women wearing makeup are perceived by others as
more attractive, competent, dominant, and more socially prestigious. Individuals
differ in how much and how frequently they use makeup. Some studies show that
women with lower self-esteem use more makeup, probably to hide imperfections.
RELIEF: Researchers have known for decades that exposure to overly perfected
beauty images can lead to body dissatisfaction, depression, anxiety and even
eating-disordered behaviors in girls and women. These images trigger a simple
but destructive comparison process.
RESULT: When the study was concluded, the data results showed that the
group that wore makeup performed significantly better than the groups that did
not. Wearing makeup not only boosts your self-esteem, but also helps you
perform better cognitively.
NEGATIVE EFFECTS:
SIDE EFFECTS: Spreading bacteria on the skin, irritation and scratches on the
eye. fire hazards, in the case of aerosol products such as hairspray. Allergic
reactions or sensitivity to ingredients.
COLOUR CHANGE: Wearing makeup everyday has side effects but sleeping
with makeup through the night can damage your skin to a great extent. Created
due to the pollution and sun, free radicals can affect the collagen weakening your
skin and lead to changes in your skin color. For example, when long lasting
lipsticks are worn for more than 10 hours, it darkens the color of your lips as it
contains ingredients that block oxygen supply to your lips.
