Term 2

Topic: Ocean Pollution Year 6 Subject: Geography

Teacher: Ms. Shazia
L.O: To examine the impact of plastic waste on the environment and evaluate
possible solutions to protect marine life.
Success Criteria:
-I can explain how human activities are affecting the oceans.
-I can use a range of persuasive messages to convince people to help the oceans.
-I can evaluate possible solutions to address the current and future effects of
plastic on the environment.

3. What does the video say about people being able to make
change in the world?
4. Can we make a change in the world?

1. What do you see in this

source?
2. What does this source
make you think about ?
3. What does this source
make you wonder?

L.O: To examine the impact of plastic

waste on the environment and evaluate
possible solutions to protect marine life.
GROUP TASKS
Group 1 :
Beach Goers

1. What are some things you can do

when you go to the beach to help
reduce/prevent marine debris.

L.O: To examine the impact of plastic

waste on the environment and evaluate
possible solutions to protect ocean life.
Group 2 :Seafarers

What are some ways you can

decrease the waste you produce
on-board? If you were a
crewmember on a cruise ship, what
are some ways you can help get
passengers to decrease their
waste and not litter?

L.O: To examine the impact of plastic

waste on the environment and evaluate
possible solutions to protect ocean life.
Group 3 :
Home-Owners

What changes can you make every day

to help reduce the trash you produce?
What products should you stay away
from (i.e. single use water bottles)?
What are some alternative products
you can use?

L.O: To examine the impact of plastic

waste on the environment and evaluate
possible solutions to protect ocean life.
Group 4 :
Factory Managers
How can you go about disposing of the
waste your factory produces properly?
What are some things you want to
avoid (i.e. dumping/littering, sending
things to landfill)? You may want to
explain what a landfill is (a way to
dispose of waste by burying it in the
ground).

L.O: To examine the impact of plastic

waste on the environment and evaluate
possible solutions to protect ocean life.
Group 5:Recycle City builders
Students create their own Recycle
city and suggest strategies to reduce
the amount of material going into the
waste stream and encourage reuse and
recycling. Students will use the
following link given below.

Did you know?
How does plastic waste
affect our oceans?
Plastic waste pollutes marine
environments in a number of
ways. Some animals think that
plastic waste is food and try to
eat it; this can make them very
ill. Other types of plastic
waste release chemicals that
can pollute water or soil, or
harm plants and animals.
How does plastic waste end up in our
oceans?

You might think that plastic waste in our oceans gets

there because waste blows off the beach, or is dropped
from boats. But actually, this waste comes from all
across the country, not just coastal areas. The wind
blows plastic rubbish out of littered streets and
landfills, and from trucks and trains on their way to
landfills. It gets into rivers, streams, and storm drains,
and then gets carried by tides and currents out to sea.
Work independently or in pairs to think about what we could do to reduce waste.
Complete the following sentence starters:
1. Instead of using a plastic bag …
Can you name some
2. Instead of using individually wrapped snacks … alternative to plastic
products?
3. Instead of plastic sandwich wrap …

4. Instead of a single-use plastic bottle …

5. Instead of a plastic straw …

6. Instead of disposable plastic cutlery …

7. Instead of individual sauce packets from the canteen …

Extended Task:
What is the Great Pacific Patch? Where is it located ?

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch: Also described as the Pacific trash
vortex, the garbage patch is an unusually high concentration of manmade-
debris located within the North Pacific Gyre in the northern Pacific
Ocean. It was first described in 1988, and came to public attention in
1997. Contrary to common belief, the majority of the garbage patch is
invisible due to low density of solid plastic, instead being largely composed
of micro-plastics, chemical sludge, and other particulates. The garbage
patch deposits significant quantities of marine debris on islands within the
North Pacific Gyre, including Midway.
