Laboratory Worksheet: Animal and Plant Cell

I. Objectives
At the end of this activity, the students should be able to:
 Enumerate the parts of the cell and its functions
 Manipulate the microscope with confidence
 Cite the importance of understanding cell and life to initiate awareness

II. Materials
A thin onion membrane/tomato blood stain
Microscope cutter / blade
Glass slides and cover slip iodine solution, water

III. Procedure
1. Add a drop of water at the center of the microscopic slide
2. Having pulled of a thin membrane from the (onion, tomato, blood), lay it at
the center of the microscopic slide (the drop of water will help flatten the
membrane)
3. Add a drop of iodine solution on the onion membrane (or methylene blue)
4. Gently lay a microscopic cover slip on the membrane and press it down
gently to remove air bubbles.
5. Place the slide on the microscope stage under low power to observe.
6. Adjust focus for clarity to observe.
7. Draw your observation at the back of this worksheet and find the following:
- Rectangular interlocking cells
- cell walls, plasma membrane
- nucleus
- vacuoles
