ACTIVITY 1.2 PROKARYOTES

Rationale of the Home-Based Laboratory Activity

This home-based laboratory activity will allow the students to explore

prokaryotic cells. They will have a deeper understanding of the different parts and
characteristics of a prokaryote.

ACTIVITY 1.2 PROKARYOTES

Introduction

Prokaryotes are unicellular organisms that lack membrane-bound structures,

the most noticeable of which is the nucleus. They do have distinct cellular regions.
The size of a prokaryotic cell can range between 0.2 to 10 microns. Bacterial cells,
which have various shapes and structures and possess extrachromosomal DNA
known as a plasmid, are examples of prokaryotic cells.
Prokaryotic cells are not complex structures. They lack a true nucleus and
genetic material. Flagella and pili are structures found in some prokaryotes. Flagella
aids in locomotion, and pili aid in the transfer of genetic material between cells.
In this activity, you are going to identify the different parts of a prokaryotic cell.

Objectives

Most Essential Learning Competency:

Distinguish prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells according to their distinguishing

features (STEM_BIO11/12- Ia-c-3).

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this home-based laboratory activity, you should be able to:
1. create a three-dimensional structure of a prokaryotic cell utilizing recycled
materials;
2. identify the various parts and functions of a prokaryotic cell; and
3. describe a prokaryotic cell.

Materials

used buttons and beads

used egg trays
stick glue
scissors or cutter
glue gun

2
plastic bottles
plastic bottle caps (any color will do)
colored papers
watercolor, paint or coloring materials available
spring of used notebook or garter

Procedures

PRECAUTION!
Be careful in using the scissors or cutter and plugging of glue gun in
the outlet. Ask for the assistance of an adult in performing this
task.

1. Look for used buttons or beads, used egg trays, plastic bottles and caps, a
spring of used notebook or garter, and watercolor or coloring materials which
are available at home.
2. Start by identifying which material you will use for each organelle in creating
your 3-D prokaryotic cell.
3. Using the materials, make a three-dimensional model of the prokaryotic cell.
See the example being shown during our discussion
4. Make the model as complete and as accurate as you can and label the different
parts.
5. You will be graded based on the attached rubric.
