transport of goods, the conveyor belt

loop.

The splicing of conveyor belts affects:
• The lifespan of the conveyor belt: the splice
is the weakest point of the conveyor belt. As the
reinforcement plies are also cut at the cutting
point, the belt structure weakens at the splice. It
happens most often that the conveyor belt at the
splice fails, making it necessary to reconnect
and/or replace it.
• Conveyor belt tracking: inaccurate splicing
causes improper belt tracking, in which case the
belt moves left and right on the conveyor.
• Physical parameters of the rubber at the
splice, such as tensile strength, elongation,
hardness, abrasion etc..

THE MOST ADVANTAGES AND

COMMON TECHNIQUES DISADVANTAGES
FOR SPLICING:
There is no perfect technique for conveyor belt splicing, as each
one of the above has its advantages but also disadvantages.
In terms of quality, hot splicing is the most desirable technique, as
hot splicing it allows the minimum loss of conveyor belt strength (on average
30%) and ensures the longest lifespan of the conveyor belt.
cold splicing Mechanical splicing is faster and cheaper. Splicing is done with
mechanical fasteners while no additional material is required
mechanical either in the compression or the joining phase. These advantages,
however, also take their toll, as the quality of a mechanically
splicing
made splice is much poorer, its lifespan much shorter while the
loss of belt strength is higher (> 50%).
Taking into account the quality of the splice and the
manufacturing cost, cold splicing can be ranked between the
mechanical and hot splicing techniques.
HOT SPLICING

The technology of
preparing a conveyor belt
for hot splicing steps:
preparation of belt ends,
marking and cutting the steps,
removal of excess material,
grinding the steps,
centring and attaching the belt
ends,
adding fresh material for splicing,
inserting the splice into the press
and curing the splice.
Special equipment (press, special splicing
tool etc.) and special splicing materials
are required for carrying out hot splicing.
The best results are achieved if the
materials used for splicing are identical
(or at least compatible) to the original belt
material.
A skilled operator is of key importance in
carrying out the splicing procedure, as
many steps are done manually. It takes at
least a year of training to master the
technique.
