Apparatus: Belt and Pulley apparatus, weights etc.

Theory:
When a rough belt goes round a rough pulley, the angle subtend@d at the center of
the pulley by the surface of the belt in contact with the pulley is called angle of contact
( 0 ) . The driving side of the belt is called tight side and the side which is driven is
called slack side. If T 1 is tight side tension & T2 is the slack side tension then,

Procedure And Precautions:

1. The angular graduations on the large disc attached to the apparatus are meant ·
to set any angle of contact. Test 1f the graduations are rightly set. Pass the belt
over the pulley, suspend weight on one end of the belt which is vertical. The
othe! end. of the belt may als9 ·:)be made to carry some weight. Adjust the
rotating disc in sµch a manner that if one part of the belt is vertical, the other
is horizontal. So that angle of lap is 90° . See that the pointer rests against 90°
mark. Jf it is not it roay be taken'11s 90°.

2. Put more weights on the two ends of the belt and set any angle less than 90° .
Keeping the weights on the slack side as fixed, add more weights on the tight
side so thatI tight side

side of the belt passes ~ver a smooth movable pulley so that tension on both
sides of it are equal. - The smooth movable pulley has been provided to set
different angles of contact otherwise only an angle of 120 could be set.

3. Change the angle of contact and keep T2 constant, find Tl for various angles
of contact.

4. · Do not throw the weights in the pan, but place them gently .and see that the
pelt just begins to move.
