Instructions
1. Write down the input-to-state equation for the PMDC motor shown in the figure below.
After that, find the dimension of the column space and null space of the A matrix.
Also, mention the basis vector(s) for both spaces mentioned above. Finally, find the
equilibrium point for the unforced system (i.e. v(t) = 0.
[4]
2. Devise a state transformation technique that will yield the following state model in the
diagonal canonical form:
0 1 0 0
A= 0 0 1 B = 0 C = 4 10 0 D=0
−4 −8 −5 1
[4]
3. Find the zero state output response
from
the following system for the step signal input.
0 1 0 0 0
0 0 1 0 0
A= B= C= 4 4 1 0 D=0 [4]
0 0 0 1 0
−12 −28 −23 −8 1
4. Find out the linearized model for the following nonlinear system. Do you think the
model is reliable enough to design a control law based on the linearized model of the
system?
ẋ1 = 40x31 + x2
ẋ2 = −x1 + 30x2 3
y = x1 [4]
5. Find a state space model for the MIMO system’s transfer function matrix as shown
below. Try to consider minimum number of the state variables to represent the model
in the state space form.
4s − 1 3
2s + 1 s+2
G(s) =
1 (s + 1)
2s2 + 5s + 2 (s + 2)2
[4]
6. Comment on the veracity of the following statements. Without a cogent argument and
appropriate justification, no answer will be considered. All parts of this question 6 must
be written in the same place.
(a) For an n-dimensional LTI system, the location of the equilibrium point could be
found by solving n non-unique independent equations, whose solution always yields
a unique point or a unique continuum of equilibrium. [2]
(b) During the decoupled representation of an unstable system, the A matrix sometimes
becomes a skew symmetry property. [2]
(c) For a unity feedback SISO system with the open-loop transfer function, which is a
proper transfer function with the specification as follows: type 1 and order 3. The
dimension of the close loop state model will become less than or equal to 4. [2]
(d) For an n-dimensional LTI system, the system will have a trajectories in the state
space for a given initial condition. [2]
(e) The input distribution matrix reveals how the rate of change of state variables get
affected by input. [2]
