a. Ferdinand Magellan b. Lapu-lapu c. Battle of Mactan? Give 2 each (overall, six)

 Ferdinand Magellan
1. He is the first guy to sail all around the world.
2. He discovered the Philippines.

 Lapu-Lapu
1. He is the one who killed Ferdinand Magellan.
2. He served the first ever resistance to imperial Spanish colonization.

 Battle Of Mactan
1. This is where the bloody fight of Lapu-lapu and Ferdinand Magellan took place.
2. It is a peaceful and beautiful place somewhere in Mindanao.

In this excerpt, what style of writing does Pigafetta utilize? In your own words, how did
the chronicler illustrate the following a. GOLD b. COCONUTS c. CLOTHING/DRESSES d.
SOCIETIES/COMMUNITIES.

 In this excerpt, Pigafetta utilizes the use of expository and descriptive writing style
in order to explain the particular happenings in Magellan’s voyage. Also, Pigafetta
uses a lot of descriptive words in which a picture of the setting is formed in the
reader’s mind. From these styles, he was able to discussed human experience,
emotions, culture, and history.

 Gold - Chronicler depicts gold as an integral part of their lives. Golds are seen
in their food, dresses, jewelry and even on teeth. They wear gold earrings
and their weapons are also clothed gold.

 Coconuts - The coconuts are depicted as a palm tree fruit by Chronicler. It's as if it's a
source of some food necessity, such as bread, wine, oil, and vinegar. At the
time, people obtained everything from that palm coconut tree. They make
use of everything, including the palm tree, its fruit, and bamboo. They'll use
it to make powder, liquor, and to bind their boats together.

 Clothing/ Dresses - Chronicler characterizes the clothing/dresses with the presence of

gold. They have large holes or earrings in their ears that they can
pass their arms through. Except for some of the chiefs, who wear cotton
cloth embroidered with silk, some people go naked, with a soft cloth woven
from the bark of a tree around their privies.

 Societies/ Communities - Chronicler depicts the societies/communities of heavy

drinkers. And that people are suffering in injustice as a result of kings who
have unlimited power to order whatever he wants, including killing
someone. The king's ally goes to great lengths to ensure that neither
thunder, lightning, or storms harm their kings.
What were the cultural practices Pigafetta wrote down that are existing/continuing today
(cite 2 examples and elaborate), and are now extinct or discontinued (give 2 examples and
elaborate)?

 People who wear earrings with a large hole on their ears are cultural practices
Pigafetta recorded that are still practiced today. As of now, some people wear
earrings with a large hole, particularly those teenagers who enjoy tattoos and
piercing. Baptismal is another cultural practice that is still present today. We can’t
argue on this one as Catholic is the most abundant religion here in the Philippines.
However, on the other hand, cultural practices Pigafetta recorded as extinct or
discontinued as of now include the practice of having a king, it is not present in our
country as we are now a practicing democracy in which the right to choose our
leader is in our hands. However, some countries around the world continue to
practice these cultural practices, and they still have Kings and Queens. Also, the
practice of wearing a piece of woven cloth from a tree. Though we can see some
practice this in festivals, it is no longer part of our daily lives in favor that our ethnic
tribes and communities also adopted the use of cotton or silk in their cultural
clothes.

In one paragraph, how does Pigafetta portrayed Magellan as a. LEADER b. SOLDIER c.

PERSONALITY?

 Pigafetta portrayed Magellan as a strong leader who spoke his mind. What he
wants will be his goal. He never left his companion; he has good
communication and plans to the pint that he established good relationships
with the kings. Also, Magellan was a good captain and soldier because he did
not disobey every order and/or command that was given to him. He always
follows orders. He is a determined and hardworking soldier who will always do
his role and responsibility. Above all, Pigafetta portrayed Magellan as a good
person because he constantly speaks of peace and God. At some points,
Magellan encouraged the king to be a good Christian and advised him to
worship the cross. Magellan was also a moral man to the people, spreading
God's goodness and being a Christian.

Compare your #1 impressions to Pigafetta's account, especially the Battle of Mactan. What
are the 3 differences you see between yours and the chronicler? Do you sympathize with
Magellan's fate and strengthen your admiration for Lapu-lapu? Explain your answer.

 The personalities of Ferdinand Magellan, Lapu-lapu, and the Battle of Mactan

differ from my first impressions of Pigafetta's account. At first, I thought
Magellan's leadership of his companion was really bad because he only thinks
about himself, but I was wrong. Magellan is a responsible leader and captain
who never disobeys orders and is determined. He does not want a war or a
fight; he wants good communication for peace settlement. On the other hand,
Lapu-lapu, as expected, sees love for his country and place. He never fails his
people, even if the cost is his life. But, as a result, he made the decision early
on to never consider the possibilities of any thought. He has no
communication; he expressed his rage through war and/or fighting. Battle of
Mactan I thought this was just a battle, but it has a story that tells about the
personalities of everyone who fought in it. How is life at the moment? I do not
sympathize with Magellan's fate, but I respect it. I have my own beliefs about
fate; we disagree about his fate and mine, but I respect both on what he
believes. What's more, Lapu-lapu is still admired because of his love. We see it
for the country because of how he will fight even if it means losing his life,
which he has never threatened. He refuses to obey the king and prevents
them from acquiring the Mactan.
