What's In a Name?
The common name For syphilis used to be "the great pox"—
"great" because of its devastating effects across Europe and
"pox" because of the sores on the skin that are typical signs of
the disease. (Later, smallpox got its name to distinguish it from
great pox.] The medical name, syphilis, comes from a poem
written in 1530 by a physician and poet, Girolamo Fracastoro. The
poem was about Syphilus, a shepherd who was infected with the
