1 Scope
This standard covers minimum engineering information that shall be included while
developing Process Flow Diagram.

2 Reference
Reference is made in this standard to the following document. The latest issues,
amendments, and supplements to this document shall apply unless otherwise indicated.

SABIC Engineering Standard (SES)

D04-G01 - Drafting Guidelines for Process Flow Diagram Preparation.

3 Definition
The Process Flow Diagram is a schematic diagram showing the basic process flow
scheme and only the major equipment, piping and instrumentation necessary for process
understanding.

4 Purpose
The Process Flow Diagram is the first drawing prepared with input from Process
Engineering. It is a schematic representation of the sequence of processing events and
operating conditions. It transmits process information for the design and specifications of
equipment and development of the piping and instrument flow diagram. It indicates the
flow rate of raw material, intermediate streams and finished products. Flow rates are
broken down into various components which are shown in tabular form as a material
balance. The physical sizes of vessels, capacities of pumps/compressors, duty
requirements for heat exchangers/fired heaters are specified. The temperature, pressure
and direction of flow are shown for all the streams. Control philosophy and major
instrumentation required for the control of the process is shown. Enough notes are
provided to aid in understanding the process, or call attention to specific process
requirements which are not obvious from PFD, but are essential for the proper design of
the plant.

5 Presentation
5.1 Refer SES D04-G01 for presentation of drawing.
5.2 Other Requirements
5.2.1 Flow arrows shall be shown at corners and intersecting lines, where there
is a change in direction of majority of flow.
5.2.2 Vertical lines shall be broken where necessary, to allow horizontal lines
to pass. Vertical lines shall be broken as follows:
a. Break vertical primary process lines when crossing horizontal
primary process lines.
b. Break vertical secondary and utility lines for horizontal primary
process lines.

c. Break vertical secondary and utility lines for horizontal secondary

and utility lines.
d. Break instrument lines for all process and utility lines.
e. For utility collection/distribution PFDs, break entering and exiting
lines around pipe rack lines.
5.2.3 Break horizontal secondary and utility lines for vertical primary process
lines.
5.3 Equipment shall be shown in elevation, using symbols for pumps, drivers,
compressors and exchangers. Other equipment, for example heaters, towers,
reactors, and driers shall be represented by diagrammatic sketches to show the
process requirements.
5.4 Major instrumentation required for the control of the process and process control
philosophy shall be shown with notes, where needed.
5.5 Only main process lines those are essential to process shall be shown in heavy
lines. Utility services shall be shown only to the extent necessary to clarify their
functions in process.
5.6 Main block and control valves shall be shown.
5.7 Equipment number, description and design basis shall be shown over the
equipment drawn as per section 8 of this document.
5.8 Abbreviations shall be used only when it is not possible to spell out the terms
used, and shall not be used when the meaning is not clear.
5.9 All process lines entering/leaving the drawing shall have a short description to
identify it.
5.10 Future lines and equipment shall be shown as dotted lines.

6 Process Information
The following process data shall be shown, as applicable:
6.1 Flow rates, temperature and pressure on all major and critical process lines.
6.2 Process lines shall be identified with a number, if material balance information is
to be provided.
6.3 Steam pressure for saturated steam. Pressure and temperature for superheated
steam.
6.4 Inlet/outlet temperature for all cooling water lines
6.5 Duplicate pieces of equipment, for example spare pumps and heat exchangers
with more than one shell, shall be referenced by appropriate notes.
6.6 Equipment used intermittently in multiple service shall be shown only once, and
the processing conditions for the various service shall be clearly shown by
appropriate notes
6.7 Equipment used alternately in cyclic operations, for example driers, shall be
shown with one unit in each of the cyclic operations.
6.8 Column trays/packing’s

7 Material Balance
The material balance is a tabulated breakdown of the various components of each
process stream shown on the flow diagram. Following format shall be used:
7.1 Process lines shall be tagged with a number in diamond, referencing the line to
the materials balance (where material balance is required). Normally Utility lines
are not identified by a number.
7.2 Information to be provided shall include stream composition in mole fraction (in
order of decreasing volatility), phase, molecular weight, density, temperature,
pressure, flow rate and other (if required).
7.3 Major steam lines which are part of the process shall be identified by stream
number and referenced to the heat and material balance table.
7.4 Material balance shall be tabulated along the bottom of the Process Flow
Diagram.

8 Equipment Data
Following information on the equipment data shall be provided in a block. This information
shall be placed along the top of the drawing and located directly above the equipment
and on the same horizontal plane as other equipment identification.
