DEVELOPING WRITING TECHNIQUES OF STUDENTS

Kh. Daujanov, S. Eskaraeva

Teaching writing skills is one of the most difficult and important tasks required from teachers of
English.
Writing, like many other language skills, progresses from the simple to the more complex, from the
personal to the academic or technical. For most students, including those for whom English is the native
language, writing is never simple. We can’t let this defeat us- or our students. Teaching writing,
especially from the standpoint of skills building, is probably the most frustrating task for English teachers
and learners.
Journal writing has become one of the most effective methods of eliciting and encouraging natural
writing at all levels of English proficiency. It’s a free writing experience that frees both the student and
the teacher, since there is no evaluation of any sort. The focus is on the relationship between the student
and the teacher, the relationship between the students and their inner thoughts. The student finds it
progressively easier to transcribe thoughts and feelings to paper. Once exposed, these thoughts and
feelings are responded to in a nonjudgmental way by a teacher.
Students should be explained that the journal writing is a kind of private communication between
the teacher and the student. That they may write about anything that makes them feel happy, angry, sad,
or what bothers, or interests.
Teachers should read the journals regularly, but they shouldn’t correct, or give marks not to
discourage students, and to keep them interested in writing. Teachers should only respond to their
writings by giving comments at the end of each writing assignment. Knowing that their teacher is
interested in their thoughts, and seeing his or her responses, they will start writing more eagerly.
Once they get started and then read their teachers responses, most of them will be happy to know
that their teacher personally cares for their thoughts.
Another way of improving the writing skills of students is composing a good sample story, and
having students to write the same story using expressions and words from it. Students may be asked to
replace the characters with their own, and add some new ideas.
Before doing this kind of tasks, students should be asked to read introductions to different books,
directions to some medicine, and biographies of some famous people so that they can use frequently used
phrases and expressions in their works.
Motivation is one of the most important ingredients in learning to write in a foreign language.
Therefore, before giving a topic to write, the teacher should discuss with the students topics that they
would like to write on. Students may suggest their own topics depending on their level of knowledge and
age for example, «How I Felt My First Day at University», «My Family», «My Future Profession», «My
First Valentine’s Day», and the like. After that, they may choose the most interesting topic by open
voting.
To make the activity more interesting and competitive, and to save time, the teacher may split
students into some subgroups assigning them to compose the essay or the report together.
One of the easier and interesting ways of learning how to write is writing short reports consisting
of six or 8 lines. They may be about students’ past, what school was like in their city, how they felt when
they first entered the university, or they may write about their future. In doing so, they will learn how to
use present, past, and future tenses.
In addition to writing short reports, they may write short pieces of advice on using some tools,
making dishes, repairing houses, or using some drugs. Before doing this kind of writing they had better
study reference books, directions to drugs etc., so that they can learn some high frequency words and
collocations.
All our teaching efforts are directed at one aim: to enable students to properly speak the target
language. As we know, speaking skills can be obtained and strengthened through much reading and
writing besides speaking and listening.
Especially important are written skills because they are closely related to speaking. When students
are asked to write a short report or a dialogue on a given situation with high frequency words used in
Spoken English, they do it with pleasure. Because, in doing so, they also improve their speaking skills as
they use words and collocations that are also used in Colloquial English.

Teachers shouldn’t make them use low frequency words such as «door-sill» or «hobnob» which are
used very seldom even by native speakers if ever used.
As the text-books are full of literary texts whose content are far from real life, and some of them
have few exercises designed to develop writing and speaking skills, teachers should make a list of
necessary topics on which students should write short stories.
Repeated use of high frequency words and their collocations in different written reports on real life
situations can dramatically improve students’ production of accurate Spoken English.
In teaching writing skills, teachers should also get their students familiarized with high frequency
words and collocations. Both advanced and beginner level students should know them well. Efforts must
also be made to improve students’ ability to understand words consciously and to use them automatically
in writing, which, in its turn, is sure to raise their ability to speak spontaneously.
