SESSION GUIDE

Session 8A: Formulating Behavioral Objectives


Duration
of Session 2 hours

Key  Behavioral Objectives define the desired learning outcome of

domains: cognitive, psychomotor and affective.
 There are two types of Learning Objectives; Terminal
Objective (TLO) and Enabling Objectives (EO). TLO states
the overall learning outcomes you want to achieve in a
specific activity while EOs are specific or concise statements
that break down the TLO into smaller, more manageable
steps that each one must achieve in order to accomplish the
Terminal Learning Objective.
 TLO and EO must follow the ABCD (Audience, Behavior,
Conditions and Degree) and SMART (Specific, Measurable,
Attainable, Result-oriented and Time-bounded) guidelines.
Learning
Objectives At the end of the session, participants are expected to:

1. recall how to craft the different types of objectives;


2. formulate terminal and enabling objectives; and
3. display positive attitude in writing learning objectives.

Introductory SAY:
Activity Look at the picture on screen. What does this picture tell you?
(10 minutes)
Possible answers:
1. It describes about LGBT.
2. It shows/depicts a step by step procedure.
3. It entails a positive outlook to achieve our objectives.
Answers may vary

SAY:
1. Choose one competency in the subjects you are teaching
Activity among yourselves.
(15 minutes) 2. Write three (3) behavioral objectives that you are going to craft
when you prepare a lesson plan for this competency.
3. Write the crafted objectives on meta cards and post them on
manila paper.
4. Choose a rapporteur to present your output in 2 minutes.
ASK:
Analysis
(5 minutes) 1. How did you find the activity?
2. How did you write your behavioral objectives?
3. What guidelines did you consider in writing a behavioral
objective?

Possible Answers:
1. It was challenging. It was enjoyable. (Answers may vary.)
2. We brainstormed, listened to each other’s opinion and got the
commonalities of our responses. (Answers may vary.)
3. We applied SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, result-
oriented, time-bounded) in writing the objectives.

ASK:
1. What should you remember in writing terminal and enabling
objectives?
2. What are the do’s and don’ts in writing objectives?
Possible Answers:
1. In writing objectives we must remember the ABCD and SMART
guidelines.
2. The DOs and DONT’s in writing objectives are:
a. DO use verbs that are action-oriented when describing the
performance.
b. DO NOT use verbs that are vague or that cannot be measured.
c. DO formulate objectives according to your
audience.
d. DO use action verbs that the participants can
relate to.
e.  DO NOT assume that certain key details are obvious.
f. DO NOT use more than one action verb per
objective.
g.  DO formulate two clear objectives instead of a misleading
one.
h. DO NOT use corporate language.
i. DO make sure the limits are set correctly.
j. DO focus on the outcome of the task.
Application “Objectives mo, i-evaluate mo”
(40 mins.) SAY:
1. Review the 3 learning objectives you have crafted earlier.
2. Check your crafted objectives if it follows the ABCD and
SMART guidelines in formulating behavioral objectives.
3. Refine those phrases that do not follow the do’s and don’ts in
writing objectives.
