Title: Plastic Waste Reduction in School

Research problem:

“The Effect of Excessive Use of Plastic Containers on School Environment”

Background Research:

Plastics are seen everywhere and are part of our daily consumption. Just look around and see,
things that are made of plastic such food containers, food wrappers, household products, home
decors, kitchen and garden tools and many more. In school, both students and teachers are
using plastics; our favorite milk tea is served in a plastic cup with plastic straw, the chairs are
used in the classroom is made of plastic as well

Plastic may come in handy to use due to it’s characteristic such as lightweight, affordability,
aesthetic design and functionality.( “How Plastic Packaging Comes in Handy with Food
Protection.” Plastivision, 4 Mar. 2019, https://www.plastivision.org/blog/how-plastic-packaging-
comes-in-handy-with-food-protection/. )

With the long list of advantages of using plastics comes with disadvantages as well.
Researchers have also cited some harmful effects of plastics in the environment due to it being
biodegradable. Plastic waste has become one of the biggest issues. Use of plastic is inevitable
especially with the growing number of populations. In some school alone, the garbage bins are
always full of plastic trash.

While society enjoy the benefits of plastics, people might as well encourage everyone to take
part in reducing the plastic waste in some school. School leaders should organize a clean up
drive; to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Reduce the use of plastics by using alternative wrappers such as paper bags instead of plastic
bags.

Reuse plastics more than once such as plastic containers, using plastic bags as garbage bag.

Recycle plastics by reinventing use of such item by turning a plastic cup into a cute plant pot.

There are hundred more ways to help minimizing plastic waste in schools alone. This is also a
great way to showcase the creativity and innovativeness and to enhance teamwork within the
students.

The purpose of this study is to lessen the plastic waste in school environments.
