CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Problem
Microplastics (tiny plastic particles) breakdown and embed
themselves in our food chain as they are ingested by marine life-
threatening larger ecosystems and consequently, human health.
Though plastic bottles are convenient and sometimes necessary
for clean water in rural areas, lack of government oversight has
lead to the proliferation of plastic disposables and it has
become an industry that has produced over 8.3 billion metric
tons of plastic in the last 6 decades, of which 6.3 billion tons has
become plastic waste.Despite the fact that water bottles often
ring in at two or three dollars a piece – a high upcharge for
something most can get for free – bottled water is still
perceived as the ‘cleanest’ way to drink water. This
overconsumption of plastic has led to excessive waste caused
by littering, poor recycling programs, and landfill spillover which
some scientists predict will become as serious a problem as
climate change. Plant Vases are a solution. A vase or a planter
are excellent allies for a fresh,
colorful and fragrant home. And it
decreases plastic pollution.

Conceptual Framework
A plastic container recycled to make a home for a plant in need.
An advantage to this method over a normal pot is that you can
see the roots of the plant when they get too big, so you know
when it needs more space. In order to produce a Plant Vases,
Masking tape, Scissor, Glue, Empty Plastic Bottle (any size),
Plant and Soil are the materials needed.

Statement of the Problem

This study is intended to analyze the capacity and efficiency
of plastic bottles into build a plant vases in triangulation study at
Taal High School during the S.Y. 2021-2022.
Specifically, the following problems will be answered
systematically in this research:
1. Is there a significance in quality in terms of using
plastic bottles in making a plant vases?
2. What are the insights of the students towards the
quality of the recycled plant vases from unnecessary
plastic bottles?
Research Hypothesis
At 0.05 level of significance, the following research
hypothesis will be tested:
1. There is a significance different in terms of quality of
Running Head: UNNECESSARY PLASTIC BOTTLES TO PLANT
VASES
the plastic bottles in making a plant vases can rather
than using other materials.
2. Students mostly have positive insights about the
recycled plant vases from unnecessary plastic bottles.
Significance of the Problem
For students, it must value everything even though it's
only waste because it can be recycled. Recycling
materials brings good benefits to us.We must keep
recycling materials to prevent us from any possible
disasters caused by waste/garbages.
For School, When schools recycle they help to reduce
fossil fuel usage, conserve resources, and help to create
local jobs. Schools help to set an example, a legacy,
which children learn to admire, and to emulate.
Running Head: UNNECESSARY PLASTIC BOTTLES TO PLANT VASES

For Community, When you recycle products, you tend

to save energy, which results in less greenhouse gas
emissions. Greenhouse gases are primarily responsible
for an increase in global warming. It helps to reduce air
and water pollution by cutting down the number of
pollutants that are released into the environment.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus to determine the insights of the
students towards the equality difference in terms of
using unnecessary plastic bottles in making recycled
plant vases. There will be twenty-five (25) respondents
which will be grade 10 to 12 students of Taal High School.
The researchers will use random sampling to avoid bias.
This method is possible to have equal chance for all the
respondents to be chosen. This study will be conducted

at ATEC High School during the second semester, third

quarter, S.Y. 2022-2023
Definition of Terms
In order to establish a common frame of reference
and understanding in the course of the study, here are the
following terms and their operational definitions.
Microplastic. Are small plastic pieces less than five
millimeters long which can be harmful to our ocean and
aquatic life Ecosystem. A geographic area where plants, animals,
and other organisms, as well as weather and landscape, work
together to form a bubble of life
Overconsumption A situation where the use of

resources has outpaced the sustainable capacity of the
ecosystem Climate Change. Refers to long-term shifts in
temperatures and weather patterns
Plastic Pollution Is the accumulation of plastic
Objects and particles in the Earth's environment that adversely
affects humans, wildlife and their habitat
Plastic Bottles. A bottle constructed from high-
density or low density plastic
Government. Is the system or group of people
Governing an organized community, generally a state

Industry Group of productive enterprises or
organizations that produce or supply goods, services, or
sources of income Landfill. Is the oldest and most common form of
waste disposal, although the systematic burial of the waste with
daily, intermediate and final covers only began in the
1940s

CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature
When you recycle plastic water bottles, you can
lower the amount of waste that contributes to landfills. In
fact, nearly 7.4 cubic yards of space in landfill space is
reduced for every ton of plastic that's recycled. Also,
recycling your plastic bottles can prevent them ending up
in the ocean and roadways as well.
According to (John Papiewski) Plastic materials are
easy to mold into a wide variety of bottle shapes,
improving their appearance and utility. For example,
manufacturers incorporate integral handles,
measurement marks and pouring lips into some types of
plastic bottles. In addition, plastics can range from
crystal clear to any shade or color, whether translucent or

Running Head: UNNECESSARY PLASTIC BOTTLES TO PLANT VASES

opaque, making products and brands easy to identify by

sight. Plastic bottles require no paint; the coloring
material is mixed into the plastic resin, so it never runs,
rubs or washes off.
According to (Ali Moro) Developing a plastic bottle
is not the issue; making a plastic bottle that causes no or
minimal environmental impact is. Plastic is a substance
with endless shapes, applications, and possibilities, as
well as an infinite time span. In the life-cycle of a plastic
bottler, there are five primary stages: raw material
extraction,manufacture,
transportation and distribution,
product usage and disposal, and recycling.
After the raw ingredients have been extracted, they
are sent to a producer, who transforms them into plastic
pellets. Heat and pressure are used to shrink the pellets,
which then bend the plastic fragments into a sturdy,
structured container.

My main goal with this project was to create

awareness of how recycling can help the environment by
reducing pollution and green house emissions; which at
the same time is affecting the whole world, and how we
can make a difference if we start recycling in school and
at home. I also wanted them to become aware of how
recycling can make an impact in the world by decreasing
globalwarming, decreasing deforestation, and reducing
the amount of toxic chemicals that go into the
landfills.Throughout this entire semester I am working
really hard to accomplish my goal of creating awareness
in school of how recycling can protect the environment.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter includes the description of the research
design, sampling and participants, instrumentation, data
collection procedures and data analysis.
Research Design
This is a triangulation study that will use the
experimental design. Because one or more variable will
be modified to assess their effect on dependent variables,
the study specific researcher design is experimental
research. It is also important to know what variables
researcher want to test and measure. Experimental
resesrch is important because it deals with scientific
method through which hypothesis will be tested and
developed.

quantitative and qualitative parts. In quantitative, the
Running Head: UNNECESSARY PLASTIC BOTTLES TO PLANT VASES

researcher will use Likert scale (4,3,2,1 choices) to

indicate the level of the statements if it if excellent, good,
slightly fair, and poor. In qualitative, it is composed of
statements that will measure the opinions or experiences
of the participants about the product of the researcher/s.
Data Gathering Procedure
The study will take place at Atec High School and
involves the students from grade 11 and 12. It will be
conducted during the fourth grading period of the school
year 2022-2023. Data collection procedures will involve
three stages: setting up an appointment and
administration of survey.
The researcher will collect the class schedule of
each section and set an appointment with the
participants in answer the survey-questionnaire to make
Running Head: UNNECESSARY PLASTIC BOTTLES TO PLANT VASES

sure that there is no interuption of classes. The

researcher will choose twenty-five participants from the
following grade level: ten in Grade 10 (random section),
ten in grade 11 (random section), five in grade 12
( random section). During the administration of the
survey, there will be an orientation before answering to
make sure that participants will give an honest answer.
The product will be shown to the participants for through
examination. Lastly, the survey will be given during the
recess time or vacant time of the participants.
Data Collection
The collection of will take place at the different
classrooms in Taal High School. The data will be
collected after the participants answer the survey-
questionnaire. Each respondent will be shown the
product for through examination and given the survey-

questionnaire to answer. To ensure the acceptability of

the data which represents the entire perceptions of Taal
students, the researcher will monitor the participants
until they finish answering the survey.
Data Analysis
For the quantitative part, the researcher will use
Likert scale to indicate the level of the research product
by its qualitative aspects. The particpants will rate the
product by checking the corresponding number: 1= Poor,
2= Slightly Fair, 3= Good, and 4= Excellent. The
participants will rate it according on it's durability
(strength), functionality (usefulness), product design,
cost-friendly and eco-friendly. The mean rating will be
applied to determine the acceptability of the product.
