Warnings and Precautions
The following warnings and precautions apply to the SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser system
and should be observed by all users at all time:
• DO NOT look directly into or at the laser beam or at specular laser reflections since direct
and reflected laser light from the laser aperture can cause permanent eye injury.
• DO NOT operate the laser unless observers are using the correct protective eyewear that
has an optical density of OD4 at 1064 and 532 nm to accommodate this laser system. The
OD information must be visible on the eyewear.
• DO NOT use objects that can readily reflect light in the vicinity of the laser beam to avoid
reflecting the beam in a hazardous manner.
• DO NOT fire the laser directly onto flammable agents or gasses as the focused laser beam
may cause ignition. There is no AP/ APG protection.
• DO NOT try to service or repair the laser other than what is included in this manual.
Service should only be performed by authorized and trained technicians.
• ALWAYS make sure the laser has its own dedicated power outlet. Additional items may
be plugged in a Multiple Portable Socket Outlet, which may be plugged into an additional
outlet.
• DO NOT use the Laser system if the ambient temperature is outside the range of 20 to
40°C, which is the rated operating temperature limits where the laser system can be
guaranteed to operate without any interruptions. Outside this range of temperature, it is
possible for the laser to generate an error condition where a message is displayed, and
the system goes into STANDBY mode until the internal temperature returns to normal
limits. Only then the laser can be used again but the error condition may reoccur unless
the rated temperature comes within limits.

Optical Hazards
The guidance for the safe use of lasers and laser systems can be found in Standards IEC 60825-
1, USA 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11, as well as ANSI Z136.1-1986. During normal operations
of the SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser, the operator is protected from laser hazards by built-in
optical absorption Safety Filters. All other personnel in the area should wear protective eyewear
to eliminate the risk of eye injury occurring.

The optical density (OD) of eye protection must be greater than or equal to 4 (≥ 4) and the
wavelengths of 1064 nanometers (nm) is also specified on it. The safety glasses specifications
are typically shown in this format:
OD4+ @ 1064 / 532 nm
Otherwise, the safety glasses are NOT suitable for eye protection purposes that meet the
standard requirements of this laser. Safety glasses are required to have the CE mark if used in
the European Union.

The SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser uses a Class I Laser Diode Aiming beam. Its wavelength
is 635 or 515 nm and the maximum power output (to be delivered to the patient’s cornea) is set
at the factory to be less than 200 microwatts (µW) (< 200 µW), which is less than the maximum
safe power that can be visualized by the retina is 390 µW. It is recommended to use the lowest
aiming beam intensity during treatment. This laser’s classification as Class IIIB is also based on
the Accessible Emission Limits (AEL), as mentioned in the standards above, assuming the laser

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 13 of 142
beam energy is delivered through a dilated pupil of diameter 7 millimeter (mm) to the posterior
capsule surface in the eye. The maximum YAG energy allowed for a Class IIIB laser operation is
shown below. These limits are calculated according to the CFR 21 regulations as their AELs are
lower than the IEC 60825. The product then complies to both requirements.

Pulse Maximum YAG Energy Allowed for a Class IIIB Laser (mJ)
Single 30
Double 40
Triple 45

Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD)

The Nominal Ocular Hazard Distance (NOHD) specifies that the distance between the equipment
and a patient’s eye, where the optical power from the equipment enters the dilated pupil of the
patient, should be less than or equal to the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) (≤ MPE), as
specified in the standards. The calculated NOHD for the SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser is
shown below. Therefore, when the laser is being used, all persons who are closer to the laser
than the distances mentioned above should be wearing eye protection. Patients should have the
untreated eye covered or protected from laser reflections.

Pulse NOHD (m)

Single (nominal) 11
Triple (maximum) 20

Avoid Exposure to Laser Beams

Reassembly or maintenance of the laser system should only be performed by authorized and
trained personnel. The external housing of the laser system should never be removed. Otherwise,
the user and/or observers could be exposed to dangerous levels of laser radiation and potentially
lethal electrical voltages.

For other personnel that may be exposed to reflections or backscatter, they must wear safety
glasses or goggles. In any case, NEVER look directly at the treatment laser beam as severe eye
injury is likely to occur. Avoid looking into the laser aperture.

Electrical Hazards
The SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser is designed to apply the International Standards for
Medical Equipment. This laser system is designed to operate with 3 terminal prongs for AC
voltage where the third pin serves as the earth-grounding prong.

WARNING! It is not safe to operate the SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser without an earth-
grounding receptacle as there will be a possible risk of electrical shock!

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 14 of 142
No cover or housing will need to be removed by the operator or user. Only authorized and trained
Service Technicians will be allowed to remove the cover or housing assembly to minimize the
possibility of laser radiation exposure and high current or voltage.

Safety Controls and Features

The system is equipped with numerous safety controls and features that are compliant with the
standard regulations. More details are shown below:

Figure 1 Safety controls and features

off from the internal components. To restore power to the system, rotate
the red button in the direction stated on the button label.
Rotating the key in a clockwise direction would turn the device ON. When
2 Key switch the key is in the ON position, the key cannot be removed. The key should
be stored in a safe, controlled place when the device is not in use.
Power ON The green light located next to the key switch indicates that when
3
indicator illuminated, the power is being supplied to the system.
With the key switch in the ON position, pressing this button for at least
“LASER 0.5 seconds would turn the laser ON, thus illuminating after
POWER” approximately a 7-second delay, allowing for laser emissions to be
4
ON/OFF possible. Power is immediately removed when the button is pushed to
button turn OFF. By default, whenever power is supplied to the system, this
button will be in the OFF state (not illuminated).
“LASER The green light located next to the “LASER POWER” ON/OFF button
5 POWER” ON indicates that when illuminated, the power is being supplied to the laser
indicator electronics.
A mechanical shutter is kept in the closed position by a spring under
Shutter tension. The shutter blocks the treatment laser beam path unless the
adjuster system is on TREAT mode and the fire button is pressed. At this point,
6 (inside front the shutter momentarily opens for less than 100 milliseconds (ms) to
panel allow the treatment laser beam pulse through and then the shutter
housing) closes. At all times, the shutter position is detected by 2 sensors which
are continuously monitored by the microprocessor.
This button toggles the laser system between STANDBY and TREAT
Mode Set modes. In STANDBY mode, the laser cannot be fired by the joystick fire
7
button button and the shutter is always closed. The TREAT mode is the only
mode that will allow external laser emissions.
STANDBY When this indicator is illuminated, the laser system is set to STANDBY
8 mode mode where no external laser emission will be delivered.
indicator
When this indicator is illuminated, the laser system is in TREAT mode
TREAT mode and the laser energy can be delivered to the patient. If the laser system
9
indicator is not operated for a period of 5 minutes, the laser system will
automatically toggle to STANDBY mode.
On the rear side of the control box, there is a connector from which 2
wires can be wired to a switch on the door of the treatment room so that
the switch goes into open circuit when the door is opened during
treatment. When the circuit connection is broken by opening the door, an
Remote door
10 audible warning tone can be heard, and the laser system will toggle to
interlock
STANDBY mode to prevent laser from firing. This feature can be
independently installed by the user, if necessary. The Manufacturer
supplies an equivalent connector with the 2 pins shorted so that the laser
will function normally if the remote door interlock feature is not utilized.
“TEST” Fire Pressing this button in either STANDBY or TREAT mode will fire the
11
button laser but keep the shutter closed. This provides the user a safe way to

new energy level. The energy is shown on the display panel.

In addition to these safety features, there are also several features that have been built-in to the
SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser system:
• When the system is first turned on, the microprocessor performs various checks to ensure
that the laser is functioning properly, it displays the software version. If the self-check test
passes, the energy of the most recent laser shot is displayed, and the device goes into
STANDBY mode. If the Microprocessor detects that the laser system requires a voltage
calibration, it will automatically start this test, where the display panel shows “CAL” and it
will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. If problems are detected during self-
checks, the laser system will display a corresponding error message.
• The microprocessor monitors the signal from the joystick fire button in order to verify that
the button contact is good. If the joystick fire button is held down for more than one second
in TREAT mode, the system will automatically go into STANDBY mode. Also, it is not
possible to go from STANDBY to TREAT mode if the fire button is pressed in STANDBY
mode.
• All the safety controls are in place to prevent the operator from unintentionally firing the
laser.
• This laser system is equipped with protective housing covers to prevent exposure to laser
emissions. Special tools are required to remove the housing covers and only authorized
and trained Service Technicians are permitted to remove them.
• There are optical safety filters built into the laser system to protect the operator’s eyes
from being exposed to the laser beam when using the equipment.
• This laser system is designed to comply with the electrical safety standards for ground
connections and ground leakages.
• If the laser system is not used or no controls are operated for 5 minutes, the system will
go into STANDBY mode.
• The laser system produces an audible warning sound when:
o Any of the buttons on the display panel is pressed.
o The remote interlock connection is removed or not properly secured to the back of the
control box upon system start-up.
o The laser is fired using the joystick fire button in TREAT mode.
o The delivered laser energy changes more than ±20% from the previously delivered
laser shots. The audible warning sound indicates that the energy levels need to be
checked or re-calibrated.
o The laser goes through self-tests upon system start-up or when the energy or pulses
are changed.

Section 4 Principles of Operation

General Description
The acronym “LASER” stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The
light beam from a laser is a valuable tool for medical applications, which possesses the
characteristics mentioned below:
• The beam from a laser is collimated. It does not diverge and can maintain a constant
diameter over a long distance. The laser beam can be focused to a very small spot with
high energy and power densities.
• The beam is monochromatic. It is a single wavelength beam that produces predictable
and reproducible tissue effects.
• The light waves are coherent. They are in phase with each other and do not interfere
and/or generate losses in energy.

YAG Mode: Ophthalmic YAG Laser 1064 nm

The YAG mode in the SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser system is an ophthalmic laser suitable
for performing the following clinical procedures:
• Posterior capsulotomy
• Pupillary membranectomy
• Iridotomy

This system has a wavelength of 1064 nm, which is in the near infrared spectrum and is invisible
to the human eye. The laser beam is generated from the laser aperture. Twin red aiming beams
are used to position and focus the treatment laser beam prior to delivering to the patient’s eye.

This system consists of a control box that houses the electronic control system and power
supplies. The laser system is housed in a slit lamp that is integrated into CSO model SL950, which
is specifically designed to adapt to the use of a laser delivery system. All the normal functions of
a slit lamp are available to the user when using the SeLecTor Deux Ophthalmic Laser system on
a slit lamp unit.

When using the slit lamp as mentioned above, a microscope doctor safety filter (DSF) is required
to protect the user from unexpected reflections that can cause eye injury during the treatments.
The DSF is mounted in the beam path of the microscope.

The user must first confirm that the patient meets the treatment requirements (indications and
contraindications) before proceeding with any treatment. Typically, the operators or their
assistants would verify that the laser system is operating correctly before positioning the patient
on the chinrest to avoid any inconvenience to the patient. This verification process includes
checking the laser output and alignment.

The user would normally use a contact lens during capsulotomy or membranectomy procedures
in order to direct the laser energy to the part of the eye that is being treated. The contact lens also
helps to hold the eye open and still during the procedure.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 24 of 142
The operator must set the laser energy and number of pulses whenever the system is turned ON.
It is the operator’s responsibility to set the acceptable energy levels and pulse number. It is
recommended to always start with a lower energy and shorter pulses to reduce the risk of
unintended patient injury. The laser settings can be altered and saved by the operator to satisfy
their preferences.

Once the laser is in TREAT mode, the user typically focuses the laser by correctly positioning the
aiming beams on the posterior surface of the capsule. The joystick is then used to fire the laser
(putting a hole in the capsule). Several laser shots would normally be required in order to produce
a large enough hole in the posterior capsule in order to give a clearer vision for the patient. Refer
to Section 6 Clinical Use in the Operator’s Manual for more clinical information.

This laser system console generates a controlled YAG beam of 1064 nm wavelength light that is
focused into a small spot to be delivered via a slit lamp. The laser beam has a spot size of
approximately 8 µm and its energy is adjustable and selected by the user.

The focused YAG laser energy will create a small plasma effect, or spark, in the eye media, which,
in turn, causes an acoustic wave that can disrupt or create a hole in the adjacent tissue. This is
commonly called the opto-acoustic effect.

Figure 3: YAG laser focusing for treatment.

The size of the plasma effect is directly proportional to the amount of energy in the focused YAG
laser beam. Therefore, as the energy is increased, the plasma will also increase, which then
generates a stronger, more powerful acoustic wave that can make larger holes in the tissue. This
acoustic wave can also damage the intraocular lens (IOL) if the plasma effect is focused too close
to the IOL. To prevent this, it is important to focus the laser beam more posterior or further away
from the tissue that is to be disrupted when increasing the laser energy. This avoids damaging
the IOL as well as giving the best and most effective disruption effect on the tissue. When the
laser energy is reduced, the effect is the reverse of the above, so the focus needs to be brought
closer to the tissue.

In this SeLecTor Deux laser system, the YAG treatment laser beam is normally defocused
posterior to the aiming beams (slit lamp focal plane) by a fixed distance. This distance has been

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 25 of 142
set to provide the optimum tissue effect at energies of 1.0 to 1.5 mJ, which is the typical setting
for posterior capsulotomy procedures.

The YAG treatment laser beam focus is adjustable by an offset dial that is located on the left-
hand side of the laser arm. This YAG offset dial is calibrated in micron or micrometer, µm. The
focus can be set by the user to the most appropriate offset setting according to the energy and
procedure that is being carried out. The posterior (+) offset sets the YAG laser treatment beam
posterior, or behind the aiming beams (slit lamp focal plane), by the settings indicated on the
offset dial. The anterior (-) offset sets the YAG laser treatment beam anterior, or in front of the
aiming beams (slit lamp focal plane). As a guide, for posterior capsulotomy procedures, the offset
should be set to around +150 µm for energies between 1.0 to 1.5 mJ. As the energy is increased,
the offset should be increased accordingly. It is recommended that the user always start with a
lower energy setting and larger offset to avoid damaging the IOL. A larger offset means that there
is less effect on the capsule surface.

The YAG treatment laser beam is invisible to the human eye, so a visible red aiming beam is used
to allow precise positioning of the treatment laser beam. The aiming beam system originates from
a red laser diode that is split into two collimated beams, which are then focused such that they
are parfocal to the slit lamp and coaxial with the treatment laser beam. Therefore, the 2 aiming
beams focus when they are merged exactly at the focal plane for the slit lamp, which means the
2 aiming beams and YAG treatment laser beam share the same center point at the focal plane of
the slit lamp. The intensity of the aiming beams is set by the small knob labeled “AIMING
INTENSITY” on the right-hand side of the slit lamp arm near the display panel.

NOTE: It is recommended that the lowest effective YAG treatment laser energy be used to
perform opto-acoustic procedures as a means of minimizing unwanted side effects such as IOL
or retinal damages. Always start the procedure at the minimum energy. Also, a larger YAG offset
focus may reduce the likelihood of IOL damage. Refer to Section 6 Clinical Use in the Operator’s
Manual for further information.

SLT Mode: Frequency-Doubled YAG Laser 532 nm

The SeLecTor Deux SLT Mode is a Nd:YAG laser providing Q-switched frequency-doubled
pulses at a wavelength of 532 nm for use in selective laser trabeculoplasty. The SLT treatment
beam delivers a 3 ns, 0.2 to 2.6 mJ, adjustable single pulse of energy. The aiming and SLT
treatment beams are coaxial with each other and focused by the slit lamp objective lens to a 400
µm spot at the focal point of the lens.

This ophthalmic laser system is specifically designed to perform Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty
(SLT), which is a proven solution for managing open-angle glaucoma (OAG). More details about
the system are as follows:
• A lightweight, portable Q-switched frequency-doubled solid-state 532 nm laser.
• 3 ns pulse duration confines thermally medicated damage to selectively targeted
pigmented cells, without creating collateral damage to surrounding tissue.
• Fixed 400 µm spot size facilitates effortless delivery of energy to the trabecular meshwork.
• Plugs into standard 110 V or 220 V electrical outlets.
• Nearly 5 years of clinically proven performance ensures high quality and reliability.

More information about the SLT clinical procedure can be found in Section 6 Clinical Use in the
Operator’s Manual.

Laser System Operation

This system consists of two major parts, as described below:

No. Item Description

• The base is called the control box where the power supplies and mains
power switches are located.
1 Control box
• The slit lamp illumination controls are located on the front panel of the
control box.
• The slit lamp is mounted on top of the control box.
• All the optical modules, such as the laser beams, energy adjuster, and
2 Slit lamp display circuits, are located inside the slit lamp arm.
• There are 5 buttons on the display panel of the slit lamp arm which are
used to set the operating modes of the laser system.

The system operation is described below:

1. Make sure all cables are connected correctly. Connect the laser system to the main power
outlet.

2. Power the electronics by turning the key switch to the ON position. Make sure the red
emergency stop button is in the release position, not pressed. The slit lamp illumination
will light up.

3. Adjust the slit lamp illumination controls (intensity, color, slit, aperture) to the desired
settings.

4. Turn the laser system ON by pressing the “LASER POWER” button on the control box.
i. The “LASER POWER” indicator lamp will illuminate.
ii. The display on the front panel of the slit lamp arm will turn ON and it will show
the following:
• Treatment laser type.
• Operation mode.
• Number of pulses.
• Total number of pulses and energy.
• Most recent energy setting.
iii. The system microprocessor controller will then perform internal self-tests to verify
that the machine is functioning properly.
iv. Should the system detect a fault at any time, it will automatically shut down to a
safe state and display an error code.
• Try rebooting the system to see if the error code can be resolved that way.
• Occasionally, the message “CAL” may be displayed after the restart. If this
occurs, it means the system is performing automatic calibration process,
which will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
• If the error code persists, contact the Manufacturer for service resolution.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 27 of 142
v. There is a shutter module equipped in the laser system, which completely blocks
the laser beam path, except when the system is in TREAT mode and the joystick
is pressed, to ensure that the patient is protected against misfiring. The
microprocessor constantly monitors the electronic sensor’s position and the
integrity of the shutter. When the system boots up, it will check the shutter position
to validate if the shutter is engaged and functional. The position of the shutter will
be continuously checked during all operating modes.

5. Once the self-tests are completed, the system automatically goes into YAG in STANDBY
mode by default. The system will also automatically be in single pulse mode by default.to
change to SLT mode, press the “MODE” button. There will be 1 automatic internal test
shot, and then the SLT LED indicator would illuminate if no errors detected. The system
automatically performs 1 automatic internal test shot and then stays in STANDBY
condition when it is switched from YAG to SLT modes, and vice versa.

6. When the laser is turned ON, it automatically goes into STANDBY mode to prevent any
accidental firing of the selected laser wavelength. In STANDBY mode,
• The joystick fire button is also automatically disabled, and the shutter module is
engaged to block the beam path so that the YAG or SLT laser energy cannot be
delivered from the objective lens.
• The controls on the laser arm and control box, except for the joystick fire button, can
be adjusted appropriate for the intended procedure. Whenever the treatment laser
type (YAG or SLT mode), pulse mode, or energy is changed, the laser will perform a
test fire. It is recommended to always start YAG procedures at the minimum energy
setting with a large YAG offset focus to minimize unwanted side effects to the patient.

7. Prior to activating the TREAT button, it is recommended that all operating conditions, such
as patient positioning, treatment laser type (YAG or SLT), energy selection, pulses, aiming
beam and illumination intensities, YAG offset, minimum air breakdown (ABD) energy
check as well as optical alignment, are correctly set. Refer to the Section 5 Installation
in the Operator’s Manual for the procedures for the minimum ABD energy check and
optical alignment. This will prevent the likelihood of accidental firing of the laser or
unintentional laser delivery during the treatment session preparation stage.

8. When the TREAT button is pressed, the system goes into treat mode, which activates the
joystick fire button while disengaging the shutter module, allowing the laser treatment and
aiming beams to pass through. The system goes through self-test and after the shutter is
verified, the laser system will be enabled. There is a closed loop control system to ensure
a stable output pulse. The laser beam will only be delivered to the objective lens when the
joystick fire button is pressed. The joystick fire button must be released in order to fire the
laser again after the first shot.

9. The system will automatically return to STANDBY mode when:

• No controls are operated for 5 minutes, or
• Any warning or error messages occur.

10. Turn the key switch in the OFF position and remove the key to turn the system OFF.

11. In the case of an emergency, the red emergency button should be pressed, and it will
automatically cut off all power to the system. Normally, the power can be turned OFF by

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 28 of 142
pressing the “LASER POWER” button on the control box or by turning the key switch in
the OFF position.

The user is expected to be trained and possess knowledge in the intended use and application of
the laser system in any surgical treatment sessions. On top of that, the laser system must be used
in a clean and controlled environment. European National Requirements may apply in some EU
countries and are to be observed by those related users.

Depending on the type of procedure performed and the condition of the patient, the user must
decide on the modality of the laser user and whether an assistant is required during the treatment
session.

As the laser system is designed to deliver the laser beam to transfer heat to the tissue, care must
be taken to avoid dangerous situations that could cause fire or explosion. The laser should not be
fired in the direction of flammable gases or liquids, which may be present in the operating room.

only mode that will allow external laser emissions.
When this indicator is illuminated, the laser system is set to STANDBY

button to check the laser’s output energy whilst the shutter remains closed.
The updated energy is shown on the display panel.
This button toggles between the number of pulses, ranging from 1 to
3, that the laser will deliver in burst mode. When the laser is first turned
“SET PULSES” ON, only 1 (single) pulse mode is selected by default. When the pulse
10

the new energy level. The number of selected is also displayed on the
“PULSES” display.
“PULSES” This LED indicates the number of pulses that will be delivered when

display the YAG laser is fired. This is also a photodiode that is connected to

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 31 of 142
the same PCB as the energy meter and allows the number of pulses
delivered from the laser module to be counted. The photodiode has
an amplifier, where the output is a series of pulses. The number of
pulses sent from the laser corresponds to the number of pulses
selected on the display panel. In the case where more pulses are
delivered than what is selected, an error code is displayed, and the
system must be shut down. This display changes whenever the “SET
PULSES” button is pressed.
This display shows the measured energy level of the YAG laser in mJ.
This display also indicates the approximation of the selected energy
when the energy adjuster is changed. A photodiode is used to
measure the energy delivered with each shot. A small amplifier unit
mounted in a housing assembly produces a signal to the
microprocessor between 0 and +5 VDC. The control system must
“ENERGY” accept this input and scale it accordingly to display the information as
12
display the energy delivered from the laser in mJ. This display is required to
be calibrated to be within ±10% of an external energy meter reading.
2 potentiometers on the micro PCB allow for minor adjustments of the
photodiode signal to match the external meter. When the energy
adjuster or the number of pulses is changed, the laser system
performs an automatic test fire to verify the new energy level. The
energy is then displayed on the display panel.
Each time the laser is fired using the joystick fire button in TREAT
mode, the system adds both the energy and the actual number of
pulses to their respective accumulated register. The total in this
“TOTAL” register is displayed at all on the 2 displays. The total pulse and energy
13
displays displays will only increment when the laser is fired in TREAT mode
and therefore, only indicate the actual energy and pulses delivered
from the system to the patient. By default, the displays are always
reset to zero upon system start-up.
This button can be used to reset both the TOTAL displays to zero to
clear the registers. This reset would be done between patients and
14 “RESET” button
after doing performance and operating checks before using the laser
on patients.
• When this button is pressed and the laser system is in TREAT mode,
a pulse or burst of pulses will be delivered from the laser unit. If the
fire button is pressed for more than 800 ms (0.8 seconds), the
microprocessor will detect and put the laser system back into
STANDBY mode. If the fire button is pressed in STANDBY mode, it is
not possible for the system to go into TREAT mode.
Joystick fire Alternatively, a footswitch (normally open contact), can be connected
15
button to the rear panel of the control box to enable an optional footswitch
operation. To do so, the footswitch option would have to be selected
in Special Mode. When the footswitch is selected, the joystick is
disabled. The system must be in TREAT mode for the footswitch to
fire the laser. Contact closure of the footswitch will cause 1 laser pulse
to occur in single pulse mode. If the footswitch is operated for more
than 2 seconds, the system will automatically go into STANDBY mode.

Section 5 Installation and Repair Procedures
The SeLecTor Deux laser system contains various electronic and electrical circuits to control,
display, and power the system. The mains wiring and power supplies are located in the control
box while the microprocessor, display, and measurement circuits are primarily stored in the slit
lamp laser arm.

The control box and laser arm are connected by the signal and power supply cables, which allow
for modular construction, although the box and laser arm cannot be interchanged with another
system without performing electronic calibrations, primarily the laser voltage and energy meter
calibration.

This section provides electrical module specifications and block diagrams to aid in troubleshooting
the system although circuits repairs should not be carried out in the field, only electrical module
replacements are allowed onsite. The circuit calibration can only be performed at the
manufacturing factory.

Overall System
Each module or circuit of this system is assembled and tested independently so that they can be
replaced if a failure occurs. The Manufacturer does not recommend attempting to repair the
module circuits onsite as it is a requirement to test and adjust each circuit, which should only be
performed at the manufacturing factory. Therefore, it is recommended to identify the faulty module
or circuit in order to replace it in the field.

Figures 6 and 7 below show the interconnection for the SeLecTor Deux laser system. More

Laser PSU Replacement

The laser PSU is a switch mode unit that converts an input of +12 VDC to a pulsed output of +350
to +864 VDC. The operation of the laser PSU is controlled by the microprocessor. The output of
the laser PSU is connected to the laser arc lamp and trigger modules. When the trigger is
discharged to the arc lamp, the gas in the arc lamp ionizes and starts to conduct electricity.
Simultaneously, the energy stored in the laser PSU output capacitors is discharged across the
arc lamp, causing it to flash. After the discharge, the PSU immediately recharges the output
capacitors in less than 0.5 seconds. Refer to Figure 11 for the laser PSU block diagram. More
details below:

To replace the laser arm modules, it is important to first ensure that the laser system is turned
OFF. The laser arm front cover that contains the display panel and Microprocessor PCB must be
removed by undoing a screw with an Alley key from underneath the front panel. Once the front
cover is removed from the laser arm, all the modules can be accessed via both inside the laser
arm and the cover.

CAUTION: If the laser system is operated with the front panel removed, it is very important to
observe all laser safety precautions as outlined in Section 2 Safety of this manual. It is
recommended to use a pair of safety glasses if the laser is operated without the cover.

When reassembling the laser arm, pay attention to the location of all the wires and cables. Ensure
that all plugs are reconnected, and the wires are positioned correctly to avoid interfering with the
gears on the energy adjuster or getting pinched when fitting the front cover.

Microprocessor PCB Replacement

The microprocessor PCB is the primary controller for the operation of the electronics in the laser
system. The microprocessor IC central processing unit (CPU) has various input/outputs (I/Os) to
the other modules. A software is programmed into the CPU during assembly to provide the
necessary flow of instructions that will operate the system when the user selects or adjusts the

Arc Lamp Trigger Replacement

Figure 39 Arc lamp trigger module.

This SeLecTor Deux laser system uses an arc lamp to optically pump a solid-state crystal material.
There is high voltage applied to the anode and cathode connections of the arc lamp (which is
inside the laser arm). When the fire button is pressed, a signal is sent from the microprocessor
PCB to the trigger module. This signal fires a pulse transformer inside the trigger module,
producing an approximately 8 kV trigger pulse to the trigger connection of the arc lamp. This
trigger pulse ionizes the gas in the arc lamp, causing the gas to conduct electricity, discharging
the high voltage from the cathode to the anode. This energy is released in the form of a bright
flash from the arc lamp.

The trigger circuit transfers the voltage of +350 to +864 VDC from the laser power supply to the
YAG laser arc lamp anode and cathode connections. There is a thick wire connecting the 8 kV
output pulse from the trigger circuit to the arc lamp trigger connection. There are 2 low voltage
(+5 VDC) inputs to the trigger circuit. Both are at 0 VDC. One is momentarily switched to +5 V,
which then fires a pulse transformer, producing the approximately 8 kV output pulse to trigger the
arc lamp. The output voltage is a negative going signal and the pulse width is typically around 1
ms. The circuit is placed inside a metal box to reduce any EMC noise and is potted due to the
high voltages that are on the circuit output. The trigger circuit is mounted on the laser cavity to
keep the wire lengths as short as possible. Figures 22 and 23 show the arc lamp trigger module
and the block diagram for the trigger circuit, respectively.

Tools needed for arc lamp trigger replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• 2.5 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.

If the arc lamp trigger module is found to be faulty, follow these steps for replacement:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Take the binoculars off.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 67 of 142
3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the magnifier housing by removing the 2 top and 2
side screws.

4. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the laser arm front cover by undoing the 2 screws
at the bottom of the cover.

5. Disconnect the 2 input wires from the laser PSU and the signal wires that connect to the
Microprocessor circuit.

6. Although the trigger module can be replaced without removing the YAG laser cavity, it is
highly recommended to remove the YAG laser cavity first to avoid putting unnecessary
stress on the arc lamp module during reassembly. Refer to Section 5.3.5 YAG Laser
Cavity Replacement for the procedures for laser cavity removal.

7. Use a 2.5 mm Allen wrench and a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the 2 screws that
hold the trigger module to the cavity.

8. Carefully disconnect the 3 wires that connect to the arc lamp module.

9. Replace the arc lamp trigger module. Reattach the 3 arc lamp wires.

10. Secure the 2 screws that hold the trigger module to the cavity.

11. Reposition the laser cavity to the laser arm, do not knock the mirrors.

12. Reattach the laser PSU wires. Make sure they are firmly attached.

13. Plug in the signal cable to the microprocessor PCB.

14. Turn the system ON. Observe all safety precautions. Upon system start-up, verify that the
arc lamp flashes 5 times.

15. Perform the procedures as per the LIGHTMED SeLecTor Deux Service Report on page
104. The system will require a full optical alignment (Section 6.3) as well as voltage and
energy meter calibrations (Section 6.4).

Energy and Pulse PCB Replacement

Figure 41 Energy and pulse circuit assembly.

There are 2 photodiodes that are used as detectors and connect to this PCB. The PCB is housed
in a box and is fitted to the energy adjuster module. One of the detectors is used to sample the
output laser energy for each shot fired. The output from the high-speed amplifier circuit produces
a voltage signal between 0 and +5 V, which then goes to the microprocessor PCB. The higher
the voltage, then the larger the energy. On the microprocessor PCB, there are 2 potentiometers,
which are used to adjust the calibration of the energy meter. The second detector is used to detect
how many Q-switched laser pulses are delivered from the YAG laser. A comparator circuit
generates a series of positive going pulses; the number of which corresponds to the number of
YAG laser pulses.

Tools needed for energy and pulse PCB replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.
• Model eye.
• Energy meter detector head.
• Energy meter display.

Figure 42 Energy and pulse block diagram.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 69 of 142
If there are more pulses detected than what was selected, an error condition is generated. If the
energy meter cannot be calibrated or error codes “Err 02” or “Err 09” occur, these circuits need
to be replaced. The replacement procedures are as follows:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Take the binoculars off.

3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the magnifier housing by removing the 2 top and 2
side screws.

4. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the laser arm front cover by undoing the 2 screws
at the bottom of the cover.

5. Remove the energy adjuster from the laser arm (refer to Section 5.3.6 Energy Adjuster
Replacement). Make sure the filters in the energy adjuster housing are not touched or
misplaced.

6. Remove the pulse detector PCB on the rear side of the laser arm.

7. Undo the 2 screws that hold the energy and pulse PCB, housing, and cover onto the
energy adjuster housing in front of the energy adjuster module. Remove the assembly.

8. Remove the energy and pulse PCB from the energy adjuster housing. Do not misplace
the filters that are in the housing.

9. Equip the new energy and pulse PCB into the energy adjuster housing. Make sure the
filters and O-rings are fitted and correctly installed in the housing. Screw the housing,
energy and pulse PCB, and cover back into the energy adjuster housing. Equip the pulse
detector to the rear of the energy adjuster housing and make sure the filters are installed
correctly. Attach the energy adjuster to the laser arm. Reconnect all the cables to their
correct locations.

10. Turn the system ON.

11. Confirm that there is an energy display at maximum energy setting. Perform the Energy
Meter Calibration procedure (Section 6.4 Energy Calibration).
• If the energy level cannot be set at maximum setting, it means there is too much
filtering in the energy adjuster housing. So, one of the filters that you can easily see
through should be removed.
• If the energy is too high, one of the supplied filters may have to be added. Set up the
system until the energy meter is calibrated.

12. Manually set the single pulse laser voltage to be higher than the double pulse threshold.
Verify that “Err 03” is displayed.
i. Restart the system. Voltage Calibration procedure will be automatically initiated.
ii. When the automatic Voltage Calibration is complete, verify the optical alignment
(Section 6.3).

13. Perform the procedures as per the LIGHTMED SeLecTor Deux Service Report.

YAG Laser Cavity Replacement
The YAG laser cavity generates the treatment laser beam for the system. It is a pulsed laser with
a very short width, therefore, creating a very high amount of energy, which when focused to a
small spot (approximately 8 µm), will ionize and cause a shock wave that disrupts the tissue in
the eye. The Nd:YAG beam has a wavelength of 1064 nm, which is invisible to the human eye.
The output beam of the cavity is polarized. The mode structure approximates fundamental TEM00
Mode. This laser system uses an arc lamp to optically pump a solid-state crystal material. Various
portions of the emitted wavelength spectrum are absorbed by the laser rod. The rod re-emits the
photons, which bounce back and forth between the laser mirrors forming a pulse of laser light. A
passive dye Q-switch is used as a photon storage device, which releases the photons in a very
short pulse of laser light. The pulse width is around 4 ns. By increasing the voltage across the arc
lamp, the cavity can be made to Q-switch pulse more than once, making 2, 3, or 4 pulses possible.
The nominal separation between pulses is 30 µs. The beam diameter of the laser cavity is 3 mm
and the output energy from the cavity is typically 16 to 20 mJ. The thermal image of the laser
output, called the “burn pattern”, can be recorded on a piece of thermally sensitive paper and the
output should yield concentric circular patterns at a diameter of 8 to 14 mm, where a concentrated
hot spot of around 2 to 4 mm should be seen in the far field. In the system, the cavity should ionize
in air at less than 2.5 mJ for new laser cavity, and less than 4.0 mJ for used cavity.

A PBS module is an optical component used to change the polarized laser beam path by
polarization principle. It is controlled by a motor rotation at either 0° and 90° position to guide the
output laser beam from the laser cavity into the YAG and SLT parts, respectively. The motor
rotates from 0° to 90°, and vice versa, when the “MODE” button is pressed to change from YAG
to SLT modes, and vice versa.

Figure 43 Laser cavity with arc lamp trigger module fitted.

This laser cavity module is mounted onto the 2 rails at the bottom of the laser arm. The arc lamp
trigger fits onto its mounting plate. The laser cavity will need to be replaced if the energy or
performance has deteriorated to a level where the laser will no longer adequately cause an opto-
acoustic effect on the patient’s eye, which is usually seen as:

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 71 of 142
• A very poor burn pattern.
• System’s maximum energy is less than 5 mJ.
• No air breakdown occurs.
• Unable to make a hole in a model eye membrane.
• Voltage Calibration procedure does not fix “Err 03”.

Tools needed for YAG laser cavity replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• 2.5 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.
• Energy meter detector head.
• Energy meter display.

YAG laser cavity replacement procedures:

5. Disconnect the laser power supply and signal wires that are connected to the trigger
module.

6. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the 3 screws that hold the YAG laser cavity onto
the rails. Remove the ground wire.

7. Remove the faulty laser cavity out of the laser arm. It is important to handle the laser cavity
with care and be cautious about not knocking or moving either of the mirror ends,
otherwise, the cavity alignment will be affected.

8. Disconnect the 3 wires that connect the arc lamp module to the trigger unit.

9. Use a 2.5 mm Allen wrench and small Phillips screwdriver to remove the 2 screws that
hold the trigger unit to the laser mounting plate.

10. Place the faulty laser cavity into a plastic bag to avoid contamination.

11. Inspect the mirror ends on the new laser cavity unit to verify that they are clean and free
of dusts and other particles.
i. Remove any protective tape on the mirror ends.
ii. Blow out the dust if there is any but avoid touching the mirror optics as they are
very difficult to clean while being fixed to the cavity.
iii. Look down the optical path to confirm that there is a clear view through all the
optics.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 72 of 142
12. If the new laser cavity looks OK, attach the trigger wires to the arc lamp module. Screw
the trigger unit onto the laser mounting plate. Attach the ground wire to the new laser
cavity.

13. Position the new laser cavity onto the rails and use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to secure the
3 screws but do not fully tighten them until all 3 are fitted.
i. First, tighten the 2 screws on the right-hand rail first as this side has the v-groove
which ensures the correct placement of the laser to the optical axis of the system.
ii. Then, tighten the left-hand fixing screw.

14. Reattach the wires to the trigger module from the laser PSU and the Microprocessor PCB
connector.

15. Turn the system ON. Observe all laser safety precautions. Verify that the arc lamp flashes
upon system start-up.

16. Voltage Calibration procedure may take place as it is likely for the system to detect
incorrect laser voltages. If this does not occur, verify that the Energy Meter Calibration is
OK and check the operation of the system.

17. Using a thermal paper, verify that the YAG burn pattern yields a series of rings and no
“beam clipping” occurs. Otherwise, it means that the laser cavity is misaligned upon
installation, and Optical Alignment (Section 6.3) is required.

18. Confirm that the minimum ABD energy is less than 2.5 mJ for new laser cavity.

19. Perform these procedures:

• Optical alignment (Section 6.3).
• Energy meter calibration (Section 6.4).
• Voltage calibration (Section 6.4).
• Laser Cavity Serial Number Check (Section 6.1.2).
• Shot Count Reset (Section 6.1.3).

Energy Adjuster Replacement

The energy adjuster module is an optical assembly that is used to control the YAG or SLT laser
energy output from the system. The output from the YAG laser cavity does not vary, rather the
energy is optically attenuated to control the amount delivered to the treatment site. The YAG laser
beam is generated from the YAG laser cavity, while the SLT laser beam is generated from the
green laser module; both produced as a polarized beam. It then passes through a half-wave
retardation plate that rotates the polarization of the beam. The energy adjuster is connected to
the halfwave plate, thus, rotating the controls rotates the half-wave plate. The beam then passes
through a polarizing optics, which only allows one plane of polarization to pass through. The
portion of the beam rejected by the polarizing beam splitter is sent onto a beam dump. The beam
has now been attenuated and passes through another beam splitter that reflects 10% of the beam
and directs it into the energy meter to read the energy level of the attenuated laser beam. After

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 73 of 142
this optic, there is the shutter assembly. The energy meter display can be calibrated to display
the actual delivered laser energy. The transmission efficiency of this module is around 80%.

Figure 44 Energy adjuster module.

A frequency-doubled KTP crystal is mounted on the SLT energy adjuster module. This KTP
crystal converts the 1064 nm laser into 532 nm. The incident angle of 1064 nm to KTP affects the
conversion rate, so in order to control the incident angle of 1064 nm laser, the KTP crystal position
holder on the SLT energy adjuster module can be adjusted by 2 screws. The most appropriate
incident angle is set by the Manufacturer. A tiny reflection mirror locates the 532 nm laser output
from the KTP crystal. This mirror reflects the green laser into the SLT energy adjuster module.

The energy adjuster module is mounted on the 2 rails directly above the YAG laser cavity. It has
several moving parts for adjusting the energy and the shutter assembly. Other than these moving
parts, there are no other parts that would likely cause problems. This module has several functions:

No. Item Description

2 optics (half-wave and polarizing plates) work together to adjust
the transmission of the YAG or SLT treatment beam. The half-wave
plate is rotated (to rotate the beam polarization), which is then
1 Energy adjuster
vector-reflected by the polarizing plate. The polarizing plate is
glued to the housing. This reflection beam is directed onto the pulse
detector to check for the number of pulses.
A 3rd optic (beam splitter) reflects a small portion of the transmitted
2 Energy detector beam onto a detector, which measures the YAG output beam
energy.
A motor-driven shutter blocks the laser beam path until opened by
the microprocessor. The shutter contains a visible light filter and its
3 Shutter
position is monitored by 2 sensors (open and closed positions). The
shutter has a spring return on it.
YAG or SLT A potentiometer is connected to the YAG or SLT energy adjuster
4 preset energy to indicate its position to the microprocessor. It is also used to
potentiometer provide a preset indication of the YAG or SLT energy.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 74 of 142
The energy meter display can be calibrated to display the actual delivered laser energy. The
transmission efficiency of this module is around 80%. The energy adjuster may require
replacement if there are error message “Err 01”, “Err 02”, or “Err 09”, or if the energy adjuster
controls cannot be set up correctly.

Tools needed for YAG or SLT energy adjuster replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.
• Thermal paper.
• Energy meter detector head.
• Energy meter display.

YAG or SLT energy adjuster replacement procedures:

5. Disconnect all cables that connect the energy adjuster to the microprocessor PCB.

6. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the 3 screws that hold the energy adjuster onto the
rails.

7. Remove the faulty energy adjuster unit out of the laser arm. It is important to avoid hitting
the laser cavity output mirror or touching any optics.

8. Place the faulty energy adjuster into a plastic bag to avoid contamination.

9. Inspect the new energy adjuster unit to verify that:

• The optics are clean and free of dusts and other particles. Remove any protective tape
on the mirror ends. Blow out the dust if there is any but avoid touching the mirror optics
as they are very difficult to clean while being fixed to the cavity.
• The shutter is functional. Rotate the shutter on the new energy adjuster unit to make
sure it freely rotates to 90° before stopping and then returns easily to its original
position under spring tension.
• The halfwave retardation optic rotates smoothly.

10. If the new energy adjuster looks OK, carefully position the new energy adjuster onto the
rails and use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to secure the 3 screws but do not fully tighten them
until all 3 are fitted.
i. First, tighten the 2 screws on the right-hand rail first as this side has the v-groove
which ensures the correct placement of the laser to the optical axis of the system.
ii. Then, tighten the left-hand fixing screw.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 75 of 142
11. Reattach all cables to the microprocessor PCB and then confirm that all cables are
positioned correctly.

12. Observe laser safety precautions. Turn the system ON.

13. Verify that the energy adjuster is operating correctly, especially the shutter. Make sure
there are no error messages displayed on the system.

14. Use a thermal paper to check the YAG or SLT burn pattern at maximum energy. Confirm
that the pattern is a series of rings and there is no “clipping” of the beam, which would
indicate an optical misalignment (refer to Section 6.3 Optical Alignment).

15. Confirm that the minimum ABD energy is occurring at an energy of less than 2.5 mJ for a
new laser cavity, less than 4.0 mJ for a used one.

16. Perform these procedures:

• Optical alignment (Section 6.3).
• Energy meter calibration (Section 6.4).
• Voltage calibration (Section 6.4).

Beam Expander Transmitter (BET) Replacement

Figure 45 YAG BET module.

The YAG BET module expands the 3 mm diameter YAG treatment beam by 10X to a diameter of
30 mm, while the SLT BET expands the 3 mm diameter SLT treatment beam to 7.5 mm. It is a
relatively simple module, containing only optics. The only moving part for the YAG BET module
is the focus adjusting lens on the bottom of the module, where the spacing between the input and
output lenses can be set to induce an offset in the YAG treatment beam relative to the focal plane

reference plane. The BET module is mounted directly above the energy adjuster on the rails using
3 screws.

This unit should be replaced if:

• The focus adjusting mechanism failed. Check by taking laser shots at a relatively low
energy for each offset setting, from +500 to -500 µm, to yield an hourglass burn pattern.
The smallest point should be at zero (0) YAG offset.
• The interior optical elements have suffered some damage. Check by looking through the
optics from the output end.

Tools needed for BET module replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.
• Thermal paper.
• Energy meter detector head.
• Energy meter display.

To replace the BET module, follow these steps:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Take the binoculars off.

3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the magnifier housing by removing the 2 top and 2

7. Remove the faulty BET module out of the laser arm. Avoid touching any of the optics and
do not hit the shutter assembly. Place the faulty BET module in a plastic bag to avoid
contamination.

8. Inspect the optics on the new BET module. Verify that the focus adjustment mechanism
is functional. Set the focus adjustment so that the lens assembly is in a similar position to
the previous BET module. This may help minimize the amount of adjustment during the
optical alignment procedure.

9. Carefully position the new BET module onto the rails. Do not touch any optics or the
shutter assembly.

10. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to secure the 3 screws but do not fully tighten them until all 3
are fitted.
i. First, tighten the 2 screws on the right-hand rail first as this side has the v-groove
which ensures the correct placement of the laser to the optical axis of the system.
ii. Then, tighten the left-hand fixing screw.

11. Reattach the aiming laser module. Confirm that all modules are installed correctly.

12. Using a thermal sensitive paper, verify that the laser burn pattern yields a series of rings
and no “beam clipping” occurs. Otherwise, it means that the BET module is misaligned
upon installation, and optical alignment is required (Section 6.3 Optical Alignment).

13. Confirm that the minimum ABD energy is less than 2.5 mJ for a new laser cavity, less than
4.0 mJ for a used one. Air breakdown is not available for SLT only system.

14. Perform these procedures:

• Optical alignment (Section 6.3).
• Energy meter calibration (Section 6.4).
• Voltage calibration (Section 6.4).

Aiming Laser Module Replacement

The aiming laser module delivers a collimated laser beam of wavelength 635 or 515 nm with a
diameter of approximately 6 mm in CW, fundamental mode. the intensity of the aiming beam is
adjustable as is the focus of the beam at the focal reference plane. The output of this module is
<1 mW (Class I). The laser diode pointing angle is adjustable to compensate for the manufacturing
tolerances of the diode. The focus is adjusted by the ring that is in contact with the diode module
assembly. Rotating this ring changes the spacing between the diode and collimating lenses. A
locking screw prevents the ring from rotating after being focused. The maximum output power of
the YAG aiming module is 50 µW and the minimum power setting should be between 2 to 8 µW.
The maximum output power of the SLT aiming module is 100 µW and the minimum power setting
should be between 5 to 25 µW.

Figure 47 YAG aiming laser module.

The YAG aiming beam intensity is adjustable by an external potentiometer fitted to the right-hand
side of the laser arm, in close vicinity to the YAG aiming laser module (Figure 30). This module
contains optical components to focus and collimate the laser beam.

The YAG aiming laser module is mounted on the rails and sits at around the same position as the
YAG BET module. The SLT aiming laser module is mounted under the SLT BET module (Figure
29). The laser diodes in both aiming laser module are very susceptible to damage with ESD, so
they may need to be replaced at some stage. If the laser diode aiming intensity cannot be adjusted
with the control or potentiometer, and the aiming illumination is dim, the diode is probably faulty.

The laser diode is powered by the power supply PCB circuit. The circuitry regulates the input
voltage to provide the power for the diode. The voltage and current to the diode are regulated. A
monitor of the diode current is used to control the intensity and provide an indication signal to the
microprocessor of the aiming beam status. The laser diode is an electrostatic discharge (ESD)-
sensitive device, so there is electromagnetic interference (EMI) filtering on the input voltage
connections. The aiming PCB is fitted to the module housing and is operated from +12 V. Figure
32 shows the block diagram for the aiming circuit.

Tools needed for aiming laser module replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 1.5 mm Allen wrench.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.
• Adjust tool (jig/cage).
• Target rod or model eye.
• Heat shrink tubing or insulation tape.
• Energy meter detector head and display.

If the error message “Err 04” (the laser diode or circuit has failed) is displayed, the aiming laser
module would need to be replaced following these steps:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Take the binoculars off.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 79 of 142
3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the magnifier housing by removing the 2 top and 2
side screws.

4. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the laser arm front cover by undoing the 2 screws
at the bottom of the cover.

5. Equip a wrist strap if available, otherwise, use extreme care when handling the aiming
laser module and avoid touching the microprocessor PCB or the laser diode.

6. To remove YAG aiming laser module:

i. Disconnect the intensity adjuster potentiometer cable and other connectors that
connect to the microprocessor PCB.
ii. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the 3 screws that hold the aiming laser
module onto the rails and place the faulty module into an ESD-safe bag.

7. To remove SLT aiming laser module:

i. Remove the SLT BET module (Section 5.3.7). The SLT aiming laser module is
mounted under the SLT BET module.
ii. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to detach the SLT aiming laser module from the SLT
BET.
iii. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to detach the SLT aiming PCB from the SLT BET
module.

8. Inspect the optics on the new aiming laser module and verify they do not look damaged
or dirty. Adjust the focus screw so it is set to a similar position as the previous module.

9. Carefully position the new aiming laser module onto the rails.

11. Reconnect the intensity potentiometer cable and other connectors.

12. Do not attach the magnifier housing yet as the system will have to go through Optical
Alignment procedure first. Instead, equip an adjust tool (cage/jig) onto the laser arm. Use
a 1.5 mm Allen wrench to attach the binoculars to the adjust tool (cage/jig).

13. Equip a target rod or model eye in front of the objective lens.

14. Turn the system ON. Observe laser safety precautions. A dark room/environment is
preferable to inspect the aiming beams after module replacement.

15. Verify that there are 2 red YAG aiming beams and 1 red SLT aiming beam coming out of
the objective lens.

16. Verify that both YAG and SLT aiming beam intensity can be adjusted by turning the
“AIMING INTENSITY” knob from minimum to maximum positions.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 80 of 142
17. Verify that the intensity for both YAG beams are similar. Otherwise, proceed as below:
i. Turn the power OFF.
ii. Use a 1.5 mm Allen wrench to slightly loosen the laser diode clamping screws.
iii. Turn the power ON.
iv. Rotate the laser diode while checking the 2 aiming beams until the beams are of
the same intensity.
v. Use a 1.5 mm Allen wrench to carefully lock the 2 screws. Do not let the Alley key
to touch the PCB or laser diode, otherwise, short circuitry will occur. It is
recommended to insulate the Allen key shaft with a heat sink tubing or insulation
tape.

18. The SLT aiming beam intensity is adjustable by the VR1 potentiometer on the SLT aiming
PCB (Figure 31) on the SLT aiming module.

19. Perform these procedures:

• Optical alignment (Section 6.3).

YAG Mirror Module Replacement

Figure 50 YAG mirror module.

The basic function of this YAG mirror module is to fold the treatment and aiming beams 90° so
that the vertical beam path is converted into a horizontal beam path to the objective focusing lens.
The mirrors for the YAG aiming beam split the single YAG beam into twin beams of equal intensity
and provides for a means to adjust them. The optics that provide safety for the user’s eyes are
included in this module. The treatment beam mirror is fixed to the carriage and can reflect the 30
mm diameter beam. The position of the YAG output beams from the aiming mirrors are adjustable
and the power for both the YAG output aiming beams are within ±10% of each other. The mirror
module is mounted at the top of the laser arm.

This mirror module would need to be replaced if:

• Optics failure.
• No effect while performing optical alignment.

Tools needed for mirror module replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Adjust tool (jig/cage).
• Target rod or model eye.
• Heat shrink tubing or insulation tape.
• Thermal paper.

The replace the mirror module, proceed with the following steps:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Take the binoculars off.

3. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the magnifier housing by removing the 2 top and 2
side screws.

SLT Mirror Module Replacement

The basic function of this SLT mirror module is to fold the SLT treatment and aiming beams 90°
so that the vertical beam path is converted into a horizontal beam path to the objective focusing
lens. This module consists of 2 ports: the first one for the SLT red aiming beam path, and the
second one for the SLT aiming beam path (Figure 29). The SLT mirror module is mounted on top
of the SLT BET module (Figure 29).

Tools needed for SLT mirror module replacement:

• Phillips screwdriver.
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Antistatic wristband.
• Thermal paper.
• Energy meter detector head.
• Energy meter display.

To replace the SLT mirror module, follow these steps:

5. Remove the aiming laser module.

6. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to remove the 3 screws that hold the SLT BET module onto
the rails.

7. Remove the faulty BET module out of the laser arm. The SLT mirror module is mounted

8. Inspect the optics on the new SLT mirror module. Verify that the focus adjustment
mechanism is functional. Set the focus adjustment so that the lens assembly is in a similar
position to the previous BET module. This may help minimize the amount of adjustment
during the optical alignment procedure.

12. Using a thermal sensitive paper, verify that the YAG burn pattern yields a series of rings
and no “beam clipping” occurs. Otherwise, it means that the BET module is misaligned
upon installation, and optical alignment is required (Section 6.3 Optical Alignment).

Section 6 Calibration / Alignment Procedures
If the treatment laser system is performing well in the ocular media of a patient, it is reasonable
to assume that the laser performance is within the Manufacturer’s specifications. The
performance can be affected by several conditions:
• YAG cavity alignment, age, and performance.
• Cleanliness of optical components.
• Temperature and humidity levels in the treatment room.
• Repetition rate of laser shots.

Special Mode
Special mode is primarily used by service and production personnel to access calibration
information, perform automatic system tests, and alter certain functions or setups. All Special
mode functions require password access, which then provides a means of controlling or limiting
access to only authorized personnel. Note that Special mode does not display the internal energy.

These procedures can be accessed in Special Mode:

• Service check (refer to Section 6.1.1).
• Voltage calibration (refer to Section 6.4.8).
• Laser cavity serial number retrieval (refer to Section 6.1.2).
• Shot count retrieval (refer to Section 6.1.3).
• Joystick or footswitch selection (refer to Section 6.1.4).

To access Special mode, follow these steps:

1. Restart the laser system.

2. Upon system start-up, press and hold the bottom 3 buttons (“SET PULSE”, “RESET”, and
“TEST”) on the display panel simultaneously. Release when a beep is heard.

3. A “P” is shown on the 1st display (“PULSES”), indicating that the password should be
entered. Press and release each button, from top to bottom, in this order:
i. 1st button (“SET MODE”),
ii. 2nd button (“SET PULSES”),
iii. 3rd button (“RESET”), and
iv. 4th button (“TEST”).

4. The display panel indicates the following upon entering Special Mode:
1st Display 2nd Display 3rd Display 4th Display
(“PULSES”) (“TOTAL PULSES”) (“TOTAL ENERGY”) (“mJ”)
4-digit decimal YAG energy per shot
(e.g., 16.71 mJ)

Service Check
The Service Check mode is used to evaluate the current operating conditions of the YAG laser
unit by comparing the current values to the previous levels that are stored in the memory from the
last calibration.

To access Service Check, follow these steps:

1. Go into Special Mode (refer to Section 6.1 Special Mode).

2. In Special Mode, press and hold the top 2 buttons (“SET MODE” and “SET PULSES”)
simultaneously. Release when a beep is heard.

3. These values are shown on the display panel upon entering Service Check mode:
1st Display 2nd Display 3rd Display 4th Display
(“PULSES”) (“TOTAL PULSES”) (“TOTAL ENERGY”) (“mJ”)
1 350 CAL -

4. The YAG energy adjuster must be set to maximum. Otherwise, the message “Set En”,
which means “Set Energy”, will be shown in the 3rd and 4th displays (“TOTAL ENERGY” &
“mJ”). No beep will be heard until the YAG energy adjuster is set to maximum.

5. When the number “350” is no longer shown on the 2nd display (“TOTAL PULSES”), that
means the system is now in the 1st stage of Service Check. Turn the YAG energy adjuster
must be turned back to the middle position (half turn). During the 1st stage of Service
Check, the system begins testing the laser voltage for single, double, and triple pulse shots.
• If the Vsingle is over 600 V, “Err 06” will occur.
• If the voltage for 4 pulses is over 860 V, “Err 07” will occur.

6. When the 2nd beep is heard, turn the YAG energy adjuster to maximum again. The system
is now entering the 2nd stage of Service Check.

7. This procedure will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

8. If the difference between previous and current laser voltages is acceptable, the display
will show “PASS” at the end of this check, indicating that the voltages have not changed
significantly.
• If the voltage difference is not acceptable, “Err 08” will be shown, which means the
Vsingle has changed too much and a full voltage calibration is required.
• If the voltage difference is too high, the system will check the laser single pulse energy
again and compare that with the value set by the previous calibration. If the difference
is within ±20%, the message “Usr 02” will be shown, indicating that the laser energy
has dropped.

9. Exit Service Check by rebooting the system.

4. When the laser cavity is replaced, the laser cavity serial number stored in the system’s
memory can be changed by pressing the 2nd and 4th buttons (“SET PULSE” and “TEST”).

5. Exit Laser Cavity Serial Number Retrieval by rebooting the system.

Shot Count Retrieval

The total accumulated number of YAG laser shots fired is stored in the system’s memory in the
form of 5-digit hexadecimal unit. This system can record up to FFFF0 shot count using the
hexadecimal system, which is equivalent to 1,048,560 shots in decimal system. The register is
cleared after every 16 shots as the system stores the shot count. If the number of shots in the
register is less than 16 and the power is turned OFF, the shots are not stored and will be lost. In
order to store the shot counts that are less than 16 and use them the next time the power is
restored, press the 1st button (“SET MODE”) before turning the power OFF. The shot count is
reset to zero (0) in the final assembly of the system or when a new laser is installed into a system.

After every 10,000-shot increment, a warning message “Usr 01” will be displayed to alert the user
that the system has fired 10,000 shots and it needs to be serviced. To clear this warning message:
• Perform Service Check procedure, or
• Simultaneously press the 3rd and 4th buttons (“RESET” and “TEST”) upon system start-up.

To retrieve the laser system’s shot count, follow these steps:

1. Follow the same steps as Section 6.1.2 Laser Cavity Serial Number Retrieval.

2. Continuing from above, a 5-digit hexadecimal shot count value is displayed on the bottom
2 displays (“TOTAL ENERGY” and “mJ”). For example, 0123A or 12345.

3. The hexadecimal shot count value can be converted into decimal number.

4. If the laser cavity is replaced, the laser shot count totals can be reset to zero (0) by
simultaneously pressing the 3rd button (“RESET”) and joystick fire button.

5. Exit Shot Count Retrieval by rebooting the system.

Joystick or Footswitch Selection
When the laser system is assembled at the factory, the joystick fire switch is the selected method
to fire the laser cavity. If a customer requires the use of a footswitch instead, this selection can be
changed by following these steps:

1. Go into Special Mode (refer to Section 6.1 Special Mode).

2. In Special Mode, simultaneously press the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (“SET PULSES”, “TEST”, and
“RESET”) buttons for 1 second. Release when a beep is heard.

3. A “P” is shown again on the 1st (“PULSES”) display, indicating that the password should
be entered. Press and release these buttons in the following order:
i. 1st button (“SET MODE”),
ii. 3rd button (“RESET”),
iii. 2nd button (“SET PULSES”), and
iv. 4th button (“TEST”).

4. Immediately look at the 4th display (“mJ”). Either “Jy” for joystick or “Ft” for footswitch will
be displayed for 2 seconds before the system returns to Special Mode. If “Jy” is displayed,
that mean the joystick is enabled, and vice versa for footswitch.

5. To change the mode, repeat Steps 3 and 4.

Service Mode
The Service Mode is primarily used by service and production personnel to check the detected
energy and parameters settings in the system.

These procedures can be accessed in Service Mode:

Optical Alignment
For safety purposes, it is very important that the treatment and aiming laser beams are aligned to
each other and that the YAG laser offset functions correctly. The treatment laser beam is invisible
to the human eye; therefore, it can only be correctly positioned on the patient eye using the 2 red
aiming beams.

This procedure should be carried out regularly by the user and must be performed when the laser
system is transported or moved to a new treatment room. It is likely for misalignment to occur if
the unit is mishandled during transport. It is recommended that this procedure be carried out at
least once a month.

Tools needed for optical alignment verification:

• A small piece of photographic or thermally sensitive paper (a sample piece is supplied
with each laser system).
• Target plate (with attached thermal paper).

Optical alignment verification procedures:

1. Attach the thermal paper to the target plate. Equip the target plate to the chinrest.

2. Turn ON the slit lamp illumination. Select the 6- or 10-mm diameter full aperture (full circle,
no slit). Make sure the diopter settings on the oculars are set correctly.

3. Position the slit lamp so that the illumination spot is focused on the paper on the target
plate.

4. Turn ON the laser system. Set the YAG offset to zero (0). In STANDBY mode, finely adjust
the slit lamp position so that the 2 red aiming beams merge into a single spot (Figure 34).
If the 2 red aiming beams are not able to merge to a single spot despite positioning the
slit lamp closer to the target plate, the optical alignment is inaccurate. Contact the
Manufacturer or local authorized Service Engineer for service.

5. The merged aiming beams should fall in the central region of the illumination spot (Figure
34).

6. Set the YAG laser energy to a minimum setting or at least less than 1 mJ. Put the laser in
TREAT mode. Verify that the 2 aiming beams are merged into one. Fire a YAG laser shot
onto the thermal paper on the target plate.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 91 of 142
Figure 51 2 red aiming beams positioned together.

7. Look through the binoculars and verify that the YAG burn mark is centered to the merged
aiming beams, within the central region of the illumination spot (Figure 35). Repeat the
test on a new area of the target to confirm the findings.

Figure 52 YAG burn mark aligned to the merged aiming beams and illumination spot.

8. Repeat the steps above at +150 and -150 µm offset settings. At zero (0) offset, the YAG
burn mark should be the smallest spot compared to the +150 and -150 µm offset settings.
If the YAG burn marks are not clear enough, increase the energy by 1 mJ and try again.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 92 of 142
All the YAG burn marks should be centered to the merged aiming beams. If the YAG offset
focus is incorrect, contact the Manufacturer or local authorized Service Engineer because
an optical alignment needs to be redone.

9. Take a YAG burn at zero (0) offset and minimum YAG energy. Look through the binoculars
and note the position of the YAG burn mark. Press the “MODE” button to switch from YAG
to SLT mode. Verify that the SLT aiming beam is aligned to the YAG burn mark.

10. Set the SLT laser energy to a minimum setting. Put the laser in TREAT mode. Fire an SLT
laser shot onto the thermal paper on the target plate.

11. Look through the binoculars and verify that the SLT burn mark is centered to the SLT
aiming beam, within the central region of the illumination spot. Repeat the test on a new
area of the target to confirm the findings.

If the YAG or SLT aiming and treatment beams are found to be misaligned, or the YAG offset is
incorrect, that means the system performance is not within Manufacturer’s specifications and
optical alignment is required.

The location of the alignment adjusters are as follows:

Minimum Air Breakdown (ABD) Energy

This procedure is not valid for SLT only system.

The verification procedures for determining the minimum ABD energy:

1. Turn the laser ON.

2. Set maximum energy at single pulse.

3. Put the laser in TREAT mode.

4. Ensure that the illumination tower is moved to one side to avoid interrupting the beam path.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 113 of 142
5. Position the slit lamp so that the focus point for the system is in free air, with nothing
blocking its beam path. Do not attach a target plate or target rod to the unit.

6. When the laser is fired in User mode, a spark should be observed at the focus plane,
approximately 107 mm in front of the objective lens.

7. Reduce the laser energy until the lowest energy where approximately 50% of the laser
shots produce a spark in the air—this energy level is called the minimum ABD energy. Do
not fire the laser too rapidly, around 1 shot per 3 seconds is recommended. It is also
advised to fire a total of 10 shots at the same energy and make sure at least 5 shots
produce sparks at that specific energy.

8. The minimum ABD energy for systems of different ages is explained below:
Laser System Minimum ABD Energy (mJ)
New ≤ 2.5
Used ≤ 4.0

9. Record the minimum ABD value on the LIGHTMED SeLecTor Deux Service Report.

The laser cavity would need to be replaced if the minimum ABD does not fall within Manufacturer’s
specifications, as mentioned in the table above. Please contact the Manufacturer for assistance.

Voltage Calibration
In order to change the pulsing operation of the YAG laser, the laser PSU output voltage is
calibrated by the control system to 3 threshold voltages that provide the single, double, or triple
pulse modes for the laser cavity. Voltage calibration is required to measure, set, and store these
threshold voltages in the system’s static memory. During this procedure, the following occur:
1. The control system set various voltages by performing a test shot check for each laser
pulsing level. The system finds the threshold levels for each pulsing level including single,
double, triple, and quadruple pulses.
2. The system then calculates the average voltages for single, double, and triple pulses.
These values, along with the threshold voltages, are stored in the system’s memory.
3. The system measures and calculates the average energies in the lookup table for the
preset energy values.
4. The laser voltages are stored with the measured threshold voltages in EEPROM and can
be viewed with the average energies for single, double, and triple pulses in the Special
Mode function.
5. Upon completion, the control system will jump to the normal start-up routine.

System Verification

Earth / Ground Resistance Check

The IEC standard IEC 60601-1 details the requirements to measure the ground resistance from
the ground pin on the mains plug and the external metal surfaces of this equipment. According to
IEC 60601-1, this ground resistance must be less than 100 mΩ for all external surfaces of the
laser system. The IEC 60601-1 standard requires this resistance to be measured using
specialized equipment that complies with its requirements. Most Service Provides companies may
not have this specialized equipment, therefore, the Manufacturer recommends that the ground
resistance is checked using a good quality resistance meter at least once every 12 months.

One cable should be connected to the ground pin on the mains plug and the other cable should
be placed on various surfaces of the SeLecTor Deux device to measure the actual resistance of
the system. The resistance must be less than 1 Ω for all test points.

Energy Adjuster Set Up

The energy adjuster attenuates the energy from the laser cavity by rotating a half-wave retardation
optic, which changes the laser polarization. This beam is then passed through a thin film polarizer
optic, which only transmits one plane of polarization. Therefore, at the 2 extreme rotation end
points for the energy adjuster, the minimum and maximum energy settings should be seen. If it is
found that the energy adjuster is not set correctly, it may be necessary to adjust the position of
the half-wave plate optic in relation to the energy adjuster in order to set the maximum and
minimum settings.

The YAG and SLT energy settings in single pulse should be the following:
Treatment Laser Minimum Energy in Maximum Energy in
Type Single Pulse (mJ) Single Pulse (mJ)
YAG 15
0.2
SLT 2.6

But these maximum energies can be less as the laser cavity ages. If the minimum setting is
incorrect, the energy adjuster must be calibrated.

Tools needed to set up energy adjuster:

• Phillips screwdriver.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 118 of 142
• 2.0 mm Allen wrench.
• Energy meter detector head.
• Energy meter display.

Follow these procedures to set up the energy adjuster:

1. Complete the following sections:

• Section 6.4.1 Clean Lens.
• Section 6.4.2 Preset Energy Aligned to External Energy.
• Section 6.4.3 Internal Energy Aligned to External Energy.
• Section 6.4.4 Internal Energy Aligned to Preset Energy.
• Section 6.4.5 AD Values.

2. Set up the energy meter detector head on the chinrest.

3. Remove the following components:

• Binoculars.
• Magnifier housing (Phillips screwdriver).
• Laser arm front cover (2.0 mm Allen wrench).

4. Use a 2.0 mm Allen wrench to loosen the 3 screws that hold the potentiometer bracket
onto the housing of the energy adjuster so that the half-wave plate can be rotated freely.

5. Fire the laser and rotate the half-wave plate until the energy is within the ±20%
Manufacturer’s specifications.

6. Make sure the stop is set to the minimum. Retighten the potentiometer bracket onto the
housing. The angle of the bracket onto the housing can be used to give a fine adjustment.

7. Recheck the output laser energy at minimum and maximum energy adjuster positions.
Confirm they are both in the acceptable range (±20%).

8. Verify that all the other output laser energies starting from the minimum energy adjuster
position are also within the Manufacturer’s specifications of ±20%. Otherwise, further
adjustment to the half-wave is required.

9. Redo these sections for verification:

• Section 6.4.1 Clean Lens.
• Section 6.4.2 Preset Energy Aligned to External Energy.
• Section 6.4.3 Internal Energy Aligned to External Energy.
• Section 6.4.4 Internal Energy Aligned to Preset Energy.
• Section 6.4.5 AD Values.

Remote Door Interlock Connections

This system has the ability to connect to a series of door interlock switches fitted to the location
where the SeLecTor Deux laser system will be used. The purpose of these switches is to disable
the YAG laser system to STANDBY mode and give an audible warning if anyone enters the

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 119 of 142
treatment room while the laser system is in use. It is the user’s responsibility to organize for their
treatment rooms to have the door interlocks installed and wired in preparation for the connection
to the laser system. If the user intends to use this door interlock system, the interlock switches
need to be connected to the YAG laser.

Before connecting the interlock switches to the laser system, verify that the wires are connected
correctly. Use a multimeter to measure the resistance or continuity of the 2 wires from the switches:
• The resistance should measure open circuit or no continuity when the treatment room
door is open.
• The resistance should measure closed circuit, zero resistance, or continuous beeping,
when the treatment room door is closed.
• There should be no voltage present into the 2 wires.

If these checks are OK, proceed with the following procedures to set up the door interlock system:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Connect the wires to the SeLecTor Deux laser system.

3. Remove the “INTERLOCK” connector on the back panel of the control box.

4. Dismantle this connector to gain access to the connector pins inside.

5. There are 2 pins (pins 2 and 3) that are linked together. Pin 2 is the common or ground
connection, and pin 3 is the interlock input to the microprocessor PCB.

6. Remove the wire link and connect the door interlock wires to pins 2 and 3.

7. Replace the connector cover and then plug into the back panel of the control box.

8. Turn the power ON. Verify that:

• The laser system can function in TREAT mode when the treatment room door is closed,
and
• The laser system locks up in STANDBY mode with an audible continuous warning
tone when the door is open.

Ophthalmic YAG Laser LIGHTLas SeLecTor Deux – Service Manual Rev. No. 04 Page 120 of 142
Footswitch Connection
If a customer wishes to use a footswitch instead of the standard joystick fire switch, it is necessary
to select the footswitch option and then connect the footswitch wires to the laser connector.

Follow these procedures to set up a footswitch connection:

1. Turn the power OFF.

2. Remove the connector marked as “INTERLOCK” on the back panel of the control box.

3. Dismantle the “INTERLOCK” connector to gain access to the connector pins inside.

4. The 2 footswitch wires should be connected to pins 1 and 2 on this plug. Pin 2 is the
common or ground connection, so there is already one wire attached to it for the door
interlock bypass link or wire connections.

5. The footswitch must operate as a contact close when the fire signal is generated, so verify
this operation. If this is correct, solder the footswitch wires to the pins. Verify that the
footswitch is operating correctly.

6. If the footswitch has a 3rd wire for a ground connection, a connector lug will have to be put
onto the wire and screw this to the chassis of the control box. Measure the ground
resistance to the footswitch to make sure that the ground is connected properly.

7. Turn the power ON.

8. Verify that the laser can be fired using the footswitch in TREAT mode.

Error Codes
If a fault, error, or warning condition is found by the microprocessor during the start-up, special
mode, or normal operation of the laser system, the laser system will go into STANDBY mode and
an error message will be shown on the front panel display. The laser system is disabled and
cannot be used when this occurs. The only way to reset an error condition is to turn the power
OFF, fix the problem, and then restart the laser system.

If an error message is regularly shown on the display, an authorized Service Engineer must check
the laser system and adjust accordingly. Under no circumstances should unauthorized or
untrained personnel attempt repairs. Refer to Section 9 for warranty details and conditions.

The following table indicates in which operating mode the error messages may occur:

Section 8 User Maintenance
The SeLecTor Deux laser system is designed to require minimal maintenance. There are several
simple routine procedures that must be carried out by the user, but aside from that, there are no
user maintenance requirements.

The Manufacturer, however, does recommend that the SeLecTor Deux laser systems be
serviced by an authorized Service Engineer every 6 months. However, it is a requirement that
this system be serviced annually, every 12 months. During this preventive maintenance (PM)
service visit, the laser system will be calibrated and aligned while verifying general operating
functions.

It is a requirement that on an annual basis (every 12 months), the SeLecTor Deux laser
system be calibrated and have its earth leakage current and earth resistance measured
according to EN60601-1. These procedures can only be performed by an authorized
Service Engineer approved by the Manufacturer.

If at any time the user has any concerns about any aspect of the laser system, they are urged to
contact the authorized representative or the Manufacturer in order to decide on a suitable course
of action.

Refer to Section 9 Warranty Details and Conditions of this Manual for specific national
requirements for EU countries.

The following procedures are recommended by the Manufacturer for the user to follow:

1. Clean the external surfaces of the laser using a damp, but not dripping, cloth. Use a mild
cleaning agent and do not use any solvents. Do not spray or pour any cleaning agents
directly onto the laser system. Avoid touching the optics, as there is a specific procedure
to clean them (Step 2 below). Use a dry cloth afterwards or allow it to air dry. This
procedure should be carried out often, at least once every 3 months. When the laser
system is not in use, keep it covered using the dust cover provided by the Manufacturer.

2. Clean the optics (objective lens, illumination tower prism, the eyepieces, and other slit
lamp accessory) by gently wiping across the optics using the moistened end of a cotton
tip (Q-tip) or a folded lens tissue (Kodak or similar) with 100% methanol or ethanol. Use
only one Q-tip or lens tissue per wipe, then discard it. Repeat with a new Q-tip or lens
tissue until the surfaces of the optics are clean. Never wipe an optic with a dry Q-tip or
lens tissue as this will scratch the optics.
