1. Downstream
in water, the direction along the stream is called downstream.

2. Upstream
in water, the direction against the stream is called upstream.

3. Let the speed of a boat in still water be u km/hr and the speed
of the stream be v km/hr, then

speed downstream = (u + v) km/hr

speed upstream = (u - v) km/hr.
4. Let the speed downstream be a km/hr and the speed upstream be b km/hr,
then

5. Assume that a man can row at the speed of x km/hr in still water and he
rows the same distance up and down in a stream which flows at a rate
of y km/hr. Then his average speed throughout the journey
6. Let the speed of a man in still water be x km/hr and the speed of a stream
be y km/hr. If he takes t hours more in upstream than to go downstream for the
same distance, the distance.

7. A man rows a certain distance downstream in t1 hours and returns the same
distance upstream in t2 hours. If the speed of the stream is y km/hr, then the
speed of the man in still water
8. A man can row a boat in still water at x km/hr in a stream flowing at y km/hr. If it
takes him t hours to row a place and come back, then the distance between the two
places

9. A man takes n times as long to row upstream as to row downstream the river. If
the speed of the man is x km/hr and the speed of the stream is y km/hr, then

(e) None of these
.
Q3. A boatman can row 2 Km against the stream in 20 minutes and
return in 18 minutes. Find the rate of current.
(a) 1/2 Km/h (b) 2/3 Km/h (c) 1/3 Km/h (d) 1/4 Km/h
(e) None of these
Q4. Twice the speed downstream is equal to the thrice the speed
upstream, the ratio of speed in still water to the speed of the current
is:
(a) 1 : 5 (b) 5 : 1 (c) 1 : 3 (d) 2 : 3
(e) None of these
Q5. A boatman goes 2 Km against the current of the stream in 1 h and
goes 1 Km along the current in 10 min. How long will he take to go 5
Km in stationary water?
(a) 1 hour (b) 1 hour 15 minutes (c) 1 1/2 hours (d) 40 minutes
(e) None of these
Q6. A person can swim at 7 (1/2) Km/h in stagnant water. In a river
with 1.5 Km/h current, the person swims to a certain distance and
comes back within 50 min. What is the distance between the two
points?
(a) 3 Km (b) 4 Km (c) 1 Km (d) 2 Km (e) None of these
Q7. A boat takes 9 hours to travel a distance upstream and takes 3
hours to travel the same distance downstream. If the speed of the boat
in still water in 4 Km/h, then what is the velocity of the stream?
(a) 4 Km/h (b) 3 Km/h(c) 6 Km/h (d) 2 Km/h(e) None of these
Q8. A man can row three-quarters of a kilometer against the stream
in 45/4 minutes and return in 15/2 minutes. The speed of the man in
still water is:
(a) 2 km/hr b) 3 km/hr (c) 4 km/hr (d) 5 km/hr
Q9. Without any stoppage a person travels a certain distance at an
average speed of 42 km/hr and with stoppages he covers the same
distance at an average speed of 28 km/h. How many minutes per
hour does he stop?
(a) 25 minutes (b) 30 minutes (c) 20 minutes (d) None of these
Q10. A boat takes 19 h for travelling downstream from point A to
point B and coming back to a point C midway between A and B. If
the velocity of the stream is 4 km/hr and the speed of the boat in still
water is 14 km/hr, what is the distance between A and B ?
(a) 200 km (b) 180 km (c) 160 km (d) 220 km
(e) None of these
Q1. In a Km Race A beats B by 100 m and C by 200 m. By how
many meter can B beat C in a race of 1350 m?
(a) 150 m (b) 120 m (c) 1200 m (d) 210 m (e) None of these
Q2. Two boys, A and B, runs at 4 1/2 and 6 Km an hour. A having 190
m start. The course being 1 km, B wins by a distance of:
(a) 60 m (b) 65 m (c) 45 m (d) 75 m (e) None of these
Q3.Three friends A, B and C participated in a 1 km race. If A
can give B a start of 200 m and A can give C a start of 100 m,
how many meters start can C give B?
a)140m b)120m c)115m d)111.11
Distance covered by A, B and C in the time A completed
the race = 1000, 800 and 900
so, ratio of distance covered by B : C = 8 : 9
when value of 9 is 1000 m
value of difference 1 will be = 1000/9 m
A,B and C start at 10 AM from the same place to walk around
a circular path of length 8 km. A walks at the rate of 4 kmph,
B at 8 kmph and C at 2 kmph. They will meet together at the
starting place at:
a)12 noon B)1.30 PM C)2 PM D)2.30 PM
Time taken by A to cover one round = 8/4 = 2 hours
time taken by B to cover one round = 8/8 = 1 hour
time taken by C to cover one round = 8/2 = 4 hours

time of meeting at starting place = LCM of (2, 1, 4) is 4

hours
so, they all meet again at the starting place at 2 PM i.E 4
hours after 10 AM.
Two cyclists P and Q cycle at 20 km/hr and 25 km/hr towards
each other. What was the distance (in kms) between them
when they started if they met after 56 minutes?
A)36 B)39 C)42 D)45
Speed of cyclist are 20km/hr and 25km/hr

relative speed with respect to each other = 20 + 25 =

45km/hr

distance = speed × time = 45 x(56/60) = 42 km/hr
